they are exaggerated but they are not fake ; anyone who has seen hikaru's reactions when he blunders a piece on stream would know this he literally acts like he is being exorcised ; he is just really passionate about the game

As someone said below, I wonder if Fabi got tricked one time by Hikaru's expressions. The funny thing is, I think Peter Svidler also said something about not trusting Hikaru's reactions a while back. Maybe he used to use that to psych his opponents out. It would be interesting to hear Hikaru address this.

Probably. Hikaru is often reacting to possible future lines or past moves. In a video recently he is talking about not liking his position, he made several mistakes in the opening, being careless, playing poorly, he is down material and is making all the negative facial expressions, his opponent misses a bishop discovery attack against a pawn in front of his king and blundered mate in 2. So for basically the entire game Hikaru is making faces that he is discouraged and losing but he then easily wins the game.

I am sure that while he emotes that he is in pain he is thinking about his community watching him.That would be a normal thing to do, and why Fabi said what he said

Hikaru doesn't just react to his moves. He'll react to moves played by someone he's sitting next to in a tournament. Classic is Aronian sitting next to Hikaru in the Rock of Gibralter tournament.

Hikaru is not faking his faces. He is just used to over-express himself to Chat when streaming because it is the way he is. Also, he frequently uses sarcastic commentaries that some people doesn't get it when doing some extreme gestures. The more charismatic one is the more likely one's behavior would be noticed as being so much more charismatic than feels natural to me - by the less charismatic. Or something like that. To me, sincerity is the thing. I doubt Fabiano doubts Hikaru's sincerity. It's not a stretch to imagine a chess genius making a social gaff. Or even being prone to them seems within imagining. Events like this, with people having to say something, has people dangerously saying things. While thousands of people can look for flaws in your expression, if they choose to. Kind of brutal.

He’s always been like that. If you’ve watched his streams you’ll probably remember him doing this kind of reactions. And also, he is not as accurate as the engine so he may have thought that he had a chance of winning. I think Fabiano should stick to playing Chess where he’s good at ☺️ Danya is better in this kind of field as he has higher fluency in English, plus talks fast. Just my opinion though.
