Fabri-Cobbling Tools for the ANVIL ~ Blacksmithing Tools from Random Stuff Around the Shop

I decided to make a few tools for the larger hardy hole in a new (to me) anvil I recently DISCOVERED! Join me on another chapter of my journey learning the incredible art of Blacksmithing!
The hardy on this 305 lb Peter Wright Anvil is 1.25" square, and all my other hardies and tools for the hardy hole were FAR too small. At some point iIll also make an adapter so I can use the small tools on the large anvil, but for now these new tools will just have to do!
I enjoy re-purposing things, and all the tools I made are from things I had laying around the shop! Some are repurposed tools, others are old Press Dies, and others are pieces I've cut off things from older projects!
A LOT can be done with a little imagination!
Make sure to watch to the end, this OLD anvil saw some HOT IRON for the first time in at least the past 50+ years! See how well it performed!
Have you MADE any tools for the anvil or your shop? If so I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
As always your opinion is always valued, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this project in the comments!
Please consider supporting the channel by buying these tools & materials for your project using the links below! It helps support the channel & won't cost you anything more!

Wow. you just blew my mind. I didn't know anything about any step at all of all before watching. I just started trying to build a metal sculpture, with found pieces, & have been trying to bang on it & bend it & fabricate & have been hunting around for techniques, just building skills. This was stunning. But I definitely had a great laugh to see the big conclusion, after all that work, making all those tools, & all that setup & fire up... of a coat hook & hanging a coat. I loved it. HA HA ha.

amateur's welding question for ya, are you using a specific style of weld rod for the hardened steel? and does the weld heat reduce the hardened properties enough to worry about being brittle or is does it sorta "meld" the ductile and brittle properties of the two base metals? and what size welder and rod is that?! that rod looks like its almost 1/2in thick!

Is the blade on backwards on the horizontal metal bandsaw? I accidentally did that on mine once and my cuts looked exactly like that. Check it out, it might be an easy fix..
@SalvageWorkshop
@SalvageWorkshop 4 года назад
I checked that already, but it's worth a second look!
@Turin-Fett
@Turin-Fett 4 года назад
@@SalvageWorkshop if the roller guides at the cutting point are spread too far apart the blade will flex and move off course. You should try to adjust them so that the blade has just enough room between them for each different piece you cut. Also, if the saw is allowed to move downward too quickly it will tend to veer off course a bit

I was helping a friend at his dads machine shop one Saturday in the early ‘70’s when I was 12. Our job was to cut 7/8 round stock on the horizontal bandsaw. It was one at a time, probably three minutes a cut. His dad had a milled gauge that each one was supposed to be checked for tolerance. Don’t recall if I knew who these were for but he said they were blanks for pushrods. I gathered it was will take all you can make type contract. I recall saying “what if” and then it was time for production ramp up! Two at a time became four at a time spiraling out of control at ten. You know those two person dynamite crates you see in the old Eastwood spaghetti westerns? Our box was about empty when we started our entrepreneurial endeavor, but a few short hours later our box was getting full and then my friend pipes up maybe we should check these in dads gauge. I should inject here tailstock support was rigged flat and near the blade was a squeeze clamp. His dad wasn’t too mad. Most everything we made was several thousands short and or a bevel cut. . I think he secretly liked the initiative....that’s what I tell myself.....was never invited back! 😬😬

Very clever hardy tools as well, seeing not what something is but what it could become is a wonderful skill for any craftsperson, but especially a smith with a penchant for reusing scrap! You know that you'll get much less movement of material and way better tool control if you'd just utilize the tools you put so much time and pride into. I understand doing what you gotta do, but you ain't gotta do it the hard way anymore, so why continue doing it?

It’s a lot of fun playing with hot metal but you can get burnt you need some longer punches and drips you make them out of car springs they work well and some long black Smith tongs see you getting a little bit close there with that punch and your hardy tools you could tighten up a bit if you heat them up and bumping up make them fit tighter I can see you having a lot of fun you just gotta do it a bit smarter

It is sad, that after all the work restoring it. and building an excellent serviceable stand. that the anvil will spend countless years as simply a decoration. the person doing the restoration clearly has the skills to use it for what it was intended to be used for. why not put it to work. that, is what it was made for. not sitting in a collection to look at.

@@SalvageWorkshop It was pretty cool. I actually discovered it about 20 years earlier, snorkeling, as a kid. At that time, it was being used as moorage for a boat. I became interested in black smithing, so I went to see if it was still there. Once I discovered it was, and that the boat and buoy were long gone, the recovery mission was on! It's not as nice as yours, but is in very usable shape, considering how long it must have been down there. Not great for finish work.

I have a small set of 1960s metric Toyota spanners, they came with the old Toyota Corona my Gran owned way back in the 70s, when she traded the car in on a new one she kept the spanners. As we both got older she had no more use for them and they eventually came to me. She's gone now, and I remember her fondly for many reasons, the Toyota spanners being one. They're not really worth much but bloody hell they're excellent spanners. They feel nice in the hand, they are a very accurate fit, and they take a beating - I've belted them with hammers and stood on them and put long poles on them and they've copped it all with no problems. They are my first spanners of choice when working on the cars (both are Japanese, so metric). They are open end spanners - I'd love some similar ring spanners but searching online I've never seen any so I don't think any were ever made. I hope the old Ford wrench is as good as a spanner as it is as a nice piece of history. Cheers :-)

I recently bought a steel cabinet with 30 large drawers to go in it. Every drawer had all kinds of tools nuts bolts, a tap and die set, you name it was in there. The kicker is I only paid $20 for it. It was the woman's father stuff she was selling and I knew she should have at least another $100 to the price, so I asked if she was sure on the price because I felt like I was stealing from her. I appreciate it George! One of the legs on the forge is slightly lower than the other 3, so it was rocking a bit when I first lit the fire... I shimmed it with a scrap piece of metal pretty quickly after... I'm planning on making adjustable feet for the forge at some point!

Realllllly random question. What is the name of the type of welding you’re doing in this? I’m new to metalwork, but I’d really like to make my own hardy tools as well! Thanks for the inspiration!

I just now, February 2023, watched the video. Seeing that your question is a year old, you've probably found an answer by now. In case you have not, or in the hope that it might help someone else, the process is informally known as stick welding. More formally, it is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and is about the simplest and least expensive means to get into welding. Edit: The "shielding" is provided by the flux coating on the welding rod. Various rod alloys and sizes adapt the process to different steel (mostly) composition and weight (thickness).

Making that speed adjust on the little wrench is smart.

Buggered if I can figure out how a square thread tap works😁 but it will be fun seeing you learn and burn blacsmithing 👍

bill baggins The tap is still round but the threads on it were square. Just a standard 4 flute tap with square thread. Square threads are still used today albeit acme has taken over for it in most application.

@@steveshopworxmachine5716 Just being silly 😁 even tho I've seen square holes with a thread, but I'd love to see a square bolt

For your Hardie hole stud, add some metal on the sides so the tool does not wobble so much.b You will like the tools much better.

I agree... I have also seen people use duct tape around the square shank to tighten up the fit in the hardy hole! Plus it quiets it down!

Hello friend I used to do alot of blacksmithing in my youth. I suggest that you make a few punches and chisels with handels on them they come in handy . Also on your tounge make a oval ring like a chain link. It goes around both handels and thightens around the work piece as you slide the ring back towards your self.

That is excellent that you can reporpose all that scrap tooling and make something awesome. Going forward, you can now make or repair just about anything. I recall buying a Shopsmith.... made a few $500, birdhouses. Costs go down for the tools the more you use them.
