My goodness, thank you SO MUCH for your videos! I'm still a beginner sewist, trying to teach myself, and your clear, concise explanations of different concepts are really a life-saver right now! It can be so, paralyzingly overwhelming, all of this new knowledge, and at times rather discouraging. I really appreciate your videos because and they're like a dose of reassurance. You really have a knack for teaching. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Wow you are so smart and full of knowledge! I was frustrated after buying a $1000 sewing machine, and you helped me so much in easing away my stress. Melly, you are making it very far in life, keep up the great work
I have been looking for some one to explain the fabric types. Wow! That is a lot to learn about. My mom was magical when sewing. I could draw her a picture and when I came home from school there would be my design.
I'm learning about fabrics coz I'm getting a machine soon. I'm completely a noob and this helps a lot! Last week I walked into a fabric store, overwhelmed and clueless! This time, after having seen this, I know what I want and need. Thanks, Melly! Your content is well delivered and time, not too wordy, straight to the point and very easy to comprehend, newbie-friendly! I just subscribed!
You know? To be honest I didn't use to be interested in fabrics and cloth; I usually just wore them. But after watching your video, I feel so overwhelmed, it's amazing and interesting how many types of fabrics there are and their functions, but above all else, your way to explain it is the best. I can see in your eyes there is a passion for what you do and that catches so much my attention and kept me watching the video. At first I just came here because, English is not my first language and I wanted to understand the difference between Fabric and Cloth more clearly, and I finished watching your whole video and taking notes of Quilting Cotton, the chinese fabric that is used in the theater, the woven fabric that is like a number sign (its structure) and Knit fabric that is used usually for clothes. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge! I'll keep watching your videos :D
This video was so informative and good. I loved that you were not too fast nor too slow. Everything about this video was amazing. Subscribed, looking forward to seeing more. Thank you
You've answered a lot of questions for me. I was very unclear about the variety of fabrics out there and now I feel like I have a much better idea. Your cotton double gauze T shirt is really nice! I guess my next question is gonna be related to: what are the best fabrics for beginners, and what type of fabrics should beginners steer clear of. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking to get to know fabrics for some time. I am looking to make designs for nice short sleeve shirts and have always been confused as to which fabric ti use. Now I have more knowledge and can even identify options. To more great content🌻
Hello mate I'm just startig and read your comments on this vid you wrote a similar thing to me only your a year ahead so I'm askin yo I want to make short sleeve shirts and can you tell me any pitfalls to avoid or if you can give me a quick bit of knowledge that you wished you had avoided thanks
What type of fabric would you recommend for non structured outerwear? Edit: I'm fairly new to sewing, and self taught. I've learned all I know from RU-vid, so I REALLY appreciate videos/information like this! Thank you!!
Hello Melissa! This was a wonderful video, I'm very new to sewing and kind of have a hard time hanging on to other tutorials, but I managed to hang onto this one just fine! If you're still answering questions: What fabric do you think would work best for a high-waisted pleated skirt? Thank you!
This is so helpful!!! Thank you!! I was wondering though what type of fabric you think this would be, I have it and I don’t know if it’s right for a certain project: it’s a metallic gold fabric that’s not very warm? Again, thanks so much for the video!!!
Your video was done very well, I'm old at this but you held my attention all the way through and enlighten me all over again. However, I'm looking for I guess you would call it the proper name of twill or any woven fabric with the added spandex. Really need proper names when you order online. Help! Thanks
I am new with sewing I bought some cotton material to make front window curtain but it's a bit see thru, what can I put on the back that I can iron or sew to filter out seeing in
Can you suggest online sites for clothing, especially cotton knits, jersey, etc.? I tried going in a JoAnn’s (only non-quilting store in my area) and the only cotton knits with designs were for children. There were solids, but I wanted a design for a woman’s top.
Amazing video, if you wanted to make a semi heavy duty shirt that would provide some protection against road rash but is lighter than demin or leather which fabric would you recommend? Would duck canvas work?
Thanks for this! I would like to ask what fabric to use for reuseable cotton pads, reuseable napkins and cloth wipes. Is is cotton, flanel, terry cloth or mixed? Thanks so much!
I don’t sew pads, so I can’t make a recommendation. this should help with the rest mellysews.com/make-reusable-paper-towels/ mellysews.com/sew-napkins/
Great video! Can I ask you something random. Do you know where someone can find microfiber fabric by the yard? I've looked at amazon, joann, and local. Also tried some other online stores and I know it's out there. It's a struggle finding it not in towel or made product already. Please help me!
Microfiber, as the name implies, is a fiber, not a fabric. More on the differences here mellysews.com/fabric-substitutions-can-sew-pattern-knit-woven-fabric/ So you should probably add the fabric construction type to your search for better results. Ex: Searching microfiber suede would lead you to the places you can buy upholstery type microfiber fabric.
@@Mellysews I have looked up microfiber terry/towel fabric is that what you mean. I see the microfiber suede alot but that's for like furniture and pillows. Not for towels, or something like bathrobe.
I realy needed this thank you sweety learning fabric with you gourgeus while drinking my coffee with AC on is much better than asking stubid quistions to a fabric salesman staring at me like he is gonna suffecat me with wooden fabric hhhhhhhhh
so, question, i saw the video of knit fabric and you were talking about how jersey is woven but not really the cloth type, so is "jersey" just the stitch type name just like a rib knit is the name of the switching sides stitch?
Thank you very much, it was great information. So I’ve got a question: In your experience what is the best stretchy knits fabric for making headband/sweatband? I really appreciate if you answer my question. Many Thanks
