Hi Everyone!
Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames finding pieces of history washed out by the tide, and then join me back at the studio where I explore the history behind some of the objects.

It's a significant weekend for my family this weekend. World Mental Health Day is on Saturday October 10th 2020 and it would have been my brother Matthew's 50th birthday on Sunday October 11th. On this video I spend some time thinking about my brother Matthew and talking about his struggle with depression which lead him to take his own life in 1997 at the young age of 26.

Hi Nicola! Talking about such family issues in public demonstrates the strength and sincerity of your character. But if you do this to benefit other people in distress, you are proving an immeasurable wealth of spirit. I'm really sorry to hear that ... *Hugs* .. I'm suffering from depressions and panic attacks every day ... My anxiety is with me every day .. sometimes, when I feel strong, I can see the beautiful sides of the world ..but mostly it's dark ... I'm taking strong meds and I hope one day they will help me to be happy again.. 🌿🌸

Oh Nicola, I’m so sorry for your loss. My sister took her life in 2011, and both my grandfather and uncle before her. I too have had major clinical depression since I was 10. I believe many people suffer quietly when getting help is so important. So thank you for encouraging us to reach out and talk, or ask for help. I’ve had help that has changed my life. I hope someone who watches this finds the courage to seek help and further add to the gifts you and your brother have given the world. Bless you both❤️

Nicola, any family loss is a pain that never leaves. My only child died in July 2016 and I miss him every day as I'm sure you do of your brother. We have memories that will never leave us and its good to remember the happy times not just the sad. I just want to say I really appreciate the wonderful nature filmography that you provide as a backdrop to your outings. It really sets the atmosphere and makes the viewer feel as natural a connection as one can in a video. Oh if I could find a magic wand to get me there in person :). Also, you chose the best music for them too! Hugs, and remember good memories!

I lost my sister to suicide as well. Never saw it coming, however, looking back at all family photos we now see how unhappy she always was. She was very funny and caring about others over herself. Keep strong and carry on!

Oh Nicola, what a beautiful and moving tribute to your brother Matthew. My heart and loving thoughts go out to you and your precious family 🤗. I too suffer through severe depression, social anxiety and panic attacks. From the age of 4yrs(I started kindergarten very early) clear through to college, school was always a terribly stressful and anxious filled endeavor 😳😣. Although I did VERY well in school, it was exhausting with the over stimulation of people. Mental health issues run very far back in my family, too. Bipolar, social anxiety and even crippling schizophrenia. Thank you so very much for reaching out and speaking of this important issue with your RU-vid family. What a beautiful tribute to Matthew. You made his personality vivid. I would have loved to know him, and I am sorry for your sorrow. We are not without hope of seeing our loved ones again. I know he would be hugely gratified at how you share your joy in mudlarking. Here is another verse you might enjoy "Behold, I give you treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places." Your words are so true. I'm sending hugs, because I know when you think about this you probably could use one. i lost my brother almost nine years ago to alcoholism. Like you, I had no idea, I lived two thousand miles away. He was very high functioning and we just didn't know. He suffered alone. He didn't want anyone to know. We have been through all of the "what if's" and the fact is, there isn't anything that we could have done. He lived his life as a free spirit. He also died two days after his birthday, so thoughts of his birth are clouded by thoughts of his death. But we keep him alive with our memories, as you are. Your thoughts on anxiety and depression are also appreciated. People need to know that it is an illness. I deal with both. I have no wish to end my life, but so many do. It is important to talk to someone to get help. Address it as soon as possible. There is help available. So, big hugs to you. My heart goes out to you and your family. Thank you for sharing.

My heart goes out to you, my beloved and hugely missed partner, Mark, took his own life in 2006 aged 42 years....he was bipolar and after suffering with a severe virus that kept him from working for a few weeks, he got it into his head that everyone would think it was his depression and he just couldn't bear that thought and the stigma that went with it in his mind.....He too was a creative, sensitive man, a great painter and philosopher, we all said he really was born in the wrong era...He was truly one of the nicest men I have ever had the pleasure to meet...since his passing, I have chosen to continue life alone and although the tears have stopped flowing so regularly, I miss him and wish so much he was still here...Love and strength to all those who may need it, especially in these difficult and worrying times...please don't suffer alone, so many of us really DO understand and are here to help you through the shadows...stay safe xx

Nicola, what a nice tribute to your brother. So glad you can tell people to talk about depression. It's a medical condition not a weakness. Most people won't tell because of the stigma that comes with it which makes them feel more alone. Maybe you telling his story will help someone dealing with depression. Glad you can hear his voice any time you want. When I saw the rainbow in one clip it ended in the Thames. Fitting since that is where your treasures come from. Love watching what you find. We all have a little treasure hunting inside of us.

A lovely tribute Nicola to Matthew and all those suffering a "private hell"...that needs to become un-private. I was one of them and at my lowest ebb around age 26 too in the late 1980's. I almost went. Age, knowledge and support have helped. Being overly sensitive can be a curse but you need it to be creative as well. Of course you know this.

A beautiful tribute to your brother. For those who choose to leave this earth may not realize the hole they leave in the hearts of those they leave behind. A lot of times you can't help them. I have an older brother (69-years-old) who has difficulties, we talk on the phone and fill each other in on what we're doing. Sometimes he's in a world I don't understand, but he knows I'm always there for him. He is really intelligent so we like to talk about high falutin things, a lot of times for laughs. I turned 50 Oct. 11th. I suffered from depression and overcame it. Also lost a loved one by suicide who suffered from depression. So thankful for that. Thank you for raising awareness for depression. Love you channel.

Here in America, we're in dire straits! Frankly, it seems there is nothing great about the situation at all! But there is always hope. Also, here in the U.S. many companies have a program called an EAP that people can reach out to for free if they are struggling with stress, anxiety and depression amongst other issues. It can be a life line when you need it most!

Very few companies have eap. It's only the super large corporations that offer it. 99% of folks here don't have that luxury. If you do, you're one of the lucky ones.

@@socalgal714 I work in a small independent clinic with less than 50 employees. I guess we are lucky! People may not be aware that their company does offer it so, they may want to check. If it can help even one person out there by posting this, then that's worth the post.

@@theresac.3216 97% of companies with more than 5000 employees offer eap. 80 percent of companies with 1,001 - 5,000 employees have one; and 75 percent of companies with 251 - 1,000 employees have an Employee Assistance Program. However! 84.9 percent of businesses have fewer than 20 employees, 96.4 percent fewer than 100, and 99.0 percent have less than 500 workers. Which puts the majority in the out of luck bucket. Yes, you are fortunate. Most of us are not.

I discovered one of my employees was suicidal, earlier this year, and steered her toward the EAP folk. It saved her life, according to her, and was the help she didn’t know she needed, and didn’t know existed. Thank God for them!

My 17 y/o daughter was just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, something that unfortunately runs in my family. She lives with her mother, and I've had little to no communication with her for nearly 2 years. I love her and miss her more than I could ever explain, and everyday that goes by without her breaks me just a little more. Nicola, thank you for publicly recognizing mental illness, and disruptive and dangerous it can be. As someone who lives with mental health issues, and is impacted by family members with mental health issues, we need to work together to end the stigma associated with mental illness, and get people help they need.

What an amazing and loving tribute to your brother! I'm sure he is watching over you! Unfortunately depression is a very under talked subject. It is much more common than anyone thinks. I totally understand as I have suffered from depression for a very long time. I am able to keep it under control now especially since I know so much more about it. Always reach out to someone. There is no darkness like depression. It took me a long time to learn to love myself. You are a shining light in my life Nic and I'm so glad to have found you on RU-vid. Sunday evenings used to be filled with darkness, dreading the week to come. Now, at 3pm I watch Si 😍💕 then go for a wander looking for treasure, back in time to watch you at 5pm 😍💕 Followed by a peaceful sleep dreaming of clay pipes and codd bottles! (and Si occasionally 😬😂) I hope you know how much happiness you bring to others ♥️

I am now the proud owner of lots of broken things! 😂 I have 2 broken codd bottles (both have my towns name on them so I love them!), loads of pipe stems and bits of pipe bowls, an inkwell, 3 bottle stoppers (one cork, one glass, one vulcanite), a few plain bottles, 5 lovely paste jars and I have boxes full of pottery which I make collages with. There is still lots of room left on my shelves (reserved for complete things!) 😊

God Bless You, there are so many of us that either live with or live with a friend or family member with a mental illness. Make a pact with someone you love to never do harm to yourself. It does work I’m 60 and still have the same pact. You are loved and needed in this world. As we all are. You would leave a puzzle with a missing piece. You are the piece that completes and finishes that puzzle.

As Matthew's Mum I so agree with you ... the last time I spoke to him I thought he was getting better, but a few days later he took his life and my heart broke. We've learned to live with the pain but it never really goes away. however Matthew's love lives on and will never die.

Sorry, there is a stigma to it and it’s barbaric and ongoing. Young men who want to be powerful learn a cruelty to direct at other men they feel competitive with that is lifelong and destructive. Some of it produces the health issues in focus here where the rest is very much the cause of it. We need to talk as urgently about that behaviour, how it’s socialised and amplified, as much as we need to talk about its effects, along with other health issues.

😥😘❤✌ I am so sorry about the loss of your brother. I just lost mine, Christopher Michael Beaty. At the end of his life he suffered mental illness due to addiction. He was so strong and had a huge tender heart and it was broken to pieces. I am so thankful for you Nicola for all you share and the truly good person you are! People try to take down the good ones but you are so much bigger and it shows well in you. You are so easy to connect with in your video's. I showed my mom one of them and she said " Nicola looks like us, she must be one of us, maybe so! (We are in the US) " I will always love you" (Quoting words in your brothers great song)

I lost my little brother a year ago from natural causes October 8th, i couldn't stop smiling even though i have tears in my eyes from watching you talk with such love about your little brother Matthew, it brought back some lovely memories for me and helped me heal a bit from what has been a rough week so i thank you for that. I've also battled depression on and off since i was a teenager, please anyone who's reading this, if you are hurting please get help, i'm proof that it does help. Wow where to start x ty for that lovely vid I've lived with (not suffered from) depression for forty years and I do believe I'm still here because for the last 15 years I have not hidden it, talking is key I manage it now and I'm in control but back when your brother was fighting his demons there was a big stigma associated with it and through ignorance you were expected to shake it off and get on with life. But through education and talking about mental health its certainly makes us not feel like lepers. So thanks to wonderful people like you who although it's painful choose to bring it to the front really do make a big difference ♥️x

Wow! First of all, thank you for your message about mental health! So many people are still afraid of the subject and don't talk about it. It' sounds like your brother was a cool guy, someone that I would have liked to hang out with. I have to say, this came at a strange time for me. I watched this on Monday the 12th, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of my husbands death from Leukemia. The struggles during his illness, and the aftermath of his death left it's marks on myself and my kids. I've dealt with depression, anxiety and PTSD. But as your message in plastic said, there is still wonderful things in this world. You just have to carry on and look for them. Today is also Thanksgiving here in Canada. Kind of appropriate! By the way, Rene, my late husband, was also a musician. He was a guitar player, his last band was a blues band by the name of Sounder. They recorded a few albums. And both of my son and daughter are currently in bands. Life goes on. I shed a few tears watching this, but that's ok. It's ok to shed tears when you need to. Again, thank you Nicola! Take care! Very sorry to hear about your brother. Tomorrow, 13th of October, will be 7 years since my daughter died. She was only 8 weeks old, born with a rare genetic condition. I resuscitated her 7 times during her short life, and that experience has left me with anxiety issues. So I have some understanding of what you are saying. My wife and I always say that if we see a rainbow or a butterfly, that is our daughter who has come to say hello. Both appeared in your film. My daughter always finds ways to contact me, and today she used your film. Thank you.

Sometimes something as simple as a compliment can turn someone's day around. Whenever I see someone wearing something really cute or interesting I always compliment them and it's so nice to see the joy on their face and the little bit of connection that happens. We all like to be seen and recognized so try it. One day at work I decided to compliment whoever I was in the elevator with. It was crazy how many new friends I made just because I said "I love your earrings" or "I really like your tie." Try it!

I lost my younger sister earlier this year to alcoholism, and I know she was unhappy and feeling angry that her life had not turned out the way she expected. I think it’s incredibly brave and giving that you told his story here as I know it will help so many people who are struggling. I remember telling you before that I suffered from depression and anxiety after the death of my father three years ago. Your videos helped me so much, they reminded me of the beauty in life and the joy to be found in being present doing something you love.
