This is one of those rare cases where not guilty by insanity is 100% appropriate. But the victims are absolutely right in what they said.

He was on drugs. He might have suffered a psychotic break but it's because of substance use. Too bad the neighbor didn't own a gun because everyone else might have been alive still. Austin should have been put down like a rabid dog. Now he'll eventually be released and he'll probably snap again. Charge him with murder and lock him up for good.

The parents neglected the signs but at the same time were in denial because they didn’t understand. They were just hoping it would get better. People can say all day what to do with your kids but denial is a crazy thing. Ignorance is a crazy thing. No one ever thinks it can happen to them. No one ever dreams this would be the outcome regardless of mental illness. It’s so extremely rare to get this this place so why would they have thought any different. This kid is one of the rare cases of 100% mental illness. Forgiveness will still be so hard and my heart hurts for the victims. This is a hard one especially when you understand mental illness. I’m super angry at his family and friends. It’s one thing to not notice depression signs because it’s very complicated. But you can immediately tell someone is in some sort of psychosis just from: 1. Consistently claiming about fighting demons and you actively see them going on ‘Patrol’ to fight them. 2. Saying that they are half-dog and half-man. Or any sort of supernatural figures or things that is untrue about them. 3. Drinking cooking oil out of nowhere or consuming weird items. 4. Tendency to talk to one self as if there’s another person in the room. 5. Express to others that a higher up figured like god convincing them to hurt themselves or others in the name of ‘saving’.

I was completely healthy mentally. Untill I was stuck in a 6 year extreme traumatic situation. After that I was diagnosed with severe Burn out, Complicated PTSD, Sever unipolar and bipolar depression. I found most people don't understand mental health, because its not a broken arm or cut over your face. It is something you cant see with your eyes. I have a totally new respect for mental health, disabled people est. Mental health is a lonely road. If you have friends and family that support you in make a world of different. I can just imagine the pain, anger and grief of the victims family. It sounds like your parents were great people. The neighbours sir...your a hero for trying to help. This is not easy. But for parents who ignoring mental health issues is un acceptable. Even if you don't understand it, get help.

As a grieving family, you need to put your anger somewhere and that becomes impossible when responsibility is being taken away by an insanity claim. One could also argue he is responsible because of his drug abuse, which can effect chemical interactions and therefore brain physiology, even chronically. Ask yourself, if someone is drunk and becomes very violent & punches a guy and that guy dies, who is responsible? The drunk guy or the alcohol? How is it different with a person who took say bath salts? This guy might not have done drugs or drink at the time so he wasn't "acutely sick" (intoxicated), he did however on a chronical level. So I do agree that he was insane during those actions & should be put in a psych ward but he still carries some responsibility in my opinion (assuming it was drug abuse induced, which seems very likely). Than there's the question do you think he should ever be released again (which can happen under an insanity claim)? I'm not a psychologist but psychology isn't an exact science. I'm however a biomedical scientist and I'd say they should analyse his genetics as well as biochemical interactions in his brain, determine whether he's genetically inclined to his behavior or if his drug abuse altered his brain physiology. If so this guy should never be released and kept under surveillance for the rest of his life. I get that there's a lot of perspectives to look at this case, but to call the family ignorant is wrong, they're not ignorant, they're hurt and angry. And I personally think they're entitled to feel that way.

Even medicated, not all mental illness dissipates. There is no magic cure-all pill. People can still have hallucinations, paranoia, and experience delusions while taking several medications. The guy looks like he's incredibly internally stimulated by hallucinations and blunted affect due to symptoms and also probably all the meds he's on. It doesn't diminish what he did, but also, mental illness is a terrible thing. A great thing to take from this is that there is a huge lack of understanding and stigma against mental illness. If people understood more and were better educated on mental health, others could recognize signs and get help sooner. Also, drug induced psychosis is 100% a thing. It doesn't mean you need to be high at the time. You could smoke weed, meth, pick your poison, and end up with a lifelong psychotic disorder depending on susceptibility and genetics. It's terrifying. Source: I work in an outpatient mental health facility with individuals who have bipolar, schizophrenia, and general psychosis symptoms. I know this is an old as hell comment, but I hope anyone who comes across this comment is able to learn a little more about mental health and recognize the importance of reducing stigma and educating themselves.

Seems like the judge, prosecutors and victims advocate failed this poor family. Were the Harrouff’s a wealthy, well connected family who received special treatment? Were strings pulled, favors called in to protect this animal? I’m not a lawyer but to me this all seems shady. The victims should’ve at least had their day in court. Why do we live in a society where expensive lawyers, time and time again set guilty people free on some bs. It shouldn’t matter who the family is, what lawyer they get, or what good things the killer did before the murder. People who kill should receive harsh punishment. We shouldn’t send murders to a posh hospital with every amenity just to be found perfectly mentally stable and released. My heart breaks for the victims and their loved ones. They deserve justice. If the defendant had don’t this to the judge’s family I have no doubt there would’ve been a trial. And I think the defendant’s family could’ve done more but ultimately this was the defendant’s choices that caused this senseless attack. And I understand the defendant’s family wants to be there for their loved one. But that doesn’t mean they can’t offer the victim’s family a sincere apology or show remorse for the victims and not just their entitled, spoiled, impenitent family member. My question to y’all is what can be done? Can the judge’s decision be revoked or something? And is there anything we can do to help the victims family?

If he does end up getting released, he’s statistically not more likely to reoffend. It’s a very common myth that people like him would just end up back on the streets and redo the same crimes when none of the data backs that up. There are hundreds of cases in Canada and the US exactly like this who end up on monitored conditional release and never murder again. And I have personal experience - I had a family member in the same situation. Never got in trouble with the law again, and we as a family never felt unsafe around them, nor did anyone else in the community. If anything, this is proof that hardcore rehab works better than prison for people who commit crimes (even murder) because of severe untreated mental illness.

I understand the families’ pain, but their comments towards Austin and his family are completely uncalled for, and they show their ignorance of how psychosis can literally break a person mentally. Unless you see how complex severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia can completely break a person to the point where they’re out of their mind and murder someone (in our case, another family member), then on top of that, have the mental healthcare system completely fail that person, it is SO easy to talk bad about that person when in actuality, they aren’t monsters. They’re victims of their own mental illnesses, and unfortunately with the way the system works, no one can get proper help until someone gets hurt. The reality is that Austin didn’t commit these murders. His schizophrenia did. Same with my family member when this same thing happened to them. It’s hard to understand if you haven’t been on that side of the equation, but if you’ve gone through it, you get it. So, I’m gonna echo your statement here but coming from the other side of it (really, both sides, but I’m focusing on the perp side): if it was your family, you wouldn’t be saying that. This is one of those rare cases where people can and should feel sorry for both the victims and the perpetrator.

This poor man. I'm not making his mental health problems an excuse but this guy must've been so troubled and paranoid to the point of murdering that couple. The mom and dad are BOTH just as guilty; the mom reported her son before it happened, but she didn't do it any other time? And the dad appeared on Dr. Phil just to get media attention, because who DOESN'T go on Dr. Phil for attention these days.... yeesh

The family needs to get over themselves. I understand they are a victim and their parents were killed. But seriously get over yourselves acting like you understand what the hell was going on with this kid

its interesting how many people in society have actually gone insane just like this guy.. sitting here feeling sorry for him.. "oh he's a victim too". like when did we become this kind of culture that worships and coddles mental illness and assigns victim status to the evil and disgusting people who commit horrible crimes.

Are you stupid? Saying that he's a victim of mental illness isn't coddling him, it's the truth.

Condolences to the victim's family. Btw, how can he eat human flesh so casually? I think he had a terrible childhood. This is why I refused having kids until I really want.

Ask your kids if they want you. Nobody wants to be here it’s just narcissists who force souls to be born into the flesh of this human hell. Keep the latex on your man’s Jack!

He was legally insane, as the verdict says. He literally said to the cops, please shoot me, I ate something bad. He had no idea what he was doing.
