yeah, I have a PhD in organic chemistry. Not totally qualified to talk about this for sure. But have some understanding. We work with infectious disease processes. She states 80 percent efficacy which is probably also false. Surgical masks were designed to block large particulates such as Sputum from contacting a open surface. Were never meant to protect the surgical staff from illness. Other than splatter or what not. Sure there may have been some benefit in dispersing viral load but was probably very minimal.

She’s very carefully choosing her words in order not to promise 100% effectiveness, but in my own experience, well fitted N95 respirators WORK. Maybe they don’t work at 100% (is there something that works at 100%?), but they definitely do their job. I wear them religiously in every indoor space except my house and so far I haven’t had covid or any other respiratory disease since I started wearing them. If there’s something in life that I trust, it’s a N95 respirator.

same experience here. 3m aura n95s are my favorite tool discovery in this ONGOING pandemic followed by my diy corsi rosenthal air filter. i never remove my n95 in a public space for a ‘short break’ and never in an unoccupied public restroom either. airborne respiratory viruses can be transmitted well after an infected person has left the room. depending on the public opinion at the time, 90-100% of people i see at the grocery etc are unmasked. many are coughing, sneezing, glaring, etc. whether i smile and nod, or shake my head in disgust, it has no affect on their behavior. i, myself, have remained uninfected as far as i know, but i acknowledge up to 60% of cases can be asymptomatic. a driving reason why i refuse to lower my guard.

The way I ended up with COVID is because my ex-husband refused to wear a mask at work and brought it home and I got too. UGH. For a very long time, whenever I was indoors with people, I consistently wore a PROPERLY FITTED N-95 respirator. On many occasions, I later discovered that people who had been close to me indoors were in an early stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and I didn’t contract the disease. (I don’t mean that I didn’t THINK I got the disease; I mean I was being PCR tested on a very regular basis, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a week, and I didn’t get infected.) A lot of people who think masks aren't effective did NOT wear N-95s, and/or did NOT consistently wear a mask in a properly fitted manner (like a chin diaper).

A mask is not a respirator. A properly worn respirator, properly fitted, etc. could be effective. The real experts in this are at NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety & Heath - part of the CDC) This is the information that should be widely disseminated.
@plum33
@plum33 6 месяцев назад
I think a lot of people forget that N95s were being tested and certified in the US way before Covid, so "Do masks work" should not be a question in 2023. Yeah, there's A LOT of basic Covid info. that has not been "messaged" and disseminated well, which is understandable because it's a new virus and "special interests" got involved in public health. What's incomprehensible to me is that most people don't seem care to learn the basic facts of how the virus spreads and how to prevent it from spreading (masks are only one tool). I like to think that most people are not selfish, they are simply tired of hearing about Covid, they have busy lives and they don't know where to turn for accurate information, so they cling to whatever helps them justify their behavior so they can feel normal.

It's not that simple, as the video highlighted. Consider seat belts. They are more or less effective depending on the design, the individual using it (their height, weight, body type, etc) the height of the shoulder strap, and so on. The important data is that using a seatbelt is safer than not, the same is true of masks.

All masks are different, but I learned that many N95s, KF94s, KN95s, etc. can be used for over 40 hours in normal conditions. Yes, they can get germy, but sweat/snot/dust probably won't make you sick--it's the virus that you want to avoid, and those masks have a middle layer with static, so that viruses are trapped there, where they are less likely to rub off onto your hands. It's a good idea to keep them as clean and dry as possible, of course, and some people choose to leave their used masks untouched for about 3 days to allow time for any viruses to die off--when masks start to stink and look gross, yeah, you want to change them. And there are some budget-friendly masks out there for those who don't want to reuse.

I see other people saying this but I don't understand--maybe you can explain the confusion. Do you mean the very first question? He asks if masks are "helpful" and she says they are "very helpful" and then explains how they work. Isn't that an answer to the question? I think he was quick to change his question from "does a mask prevent Covid" to "is it helpful" because he knows, like she says, that no one can say they are 100% effective (just as with other protections like seat belts and helmets and birth control), but she explains that even 80% effective masks reduce the amount of virus inhaled which means there is less of a chance you will be exposed to enough virus to make you sick. Yes, she's choosing her words carefully, but the words and examples she uses show me that she DOES think masks work to block and trap virus particles and that there is no doubt in her mind that they are very helpful. But yeah, maybe she's not the best spokesperson for masks?
@captkerosene
@captkerosene 7 месяцев назад
One minute in: Were you able to show that masks work scientifically? The answer is "no" because she deflects on the answer. What they showed could help, hurt or have no impact on transmission. The Cochrane Review has the best data. Hand washing seems to work a little, masks probably not.@@plum33
@plum33
@plum33 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the response. Correct me if I'm wrong@@captkerosene: I thought the Cochrane mask study gave people masks and noted that many didn't use them--so the MASKS were not tested. If we're talking about the same study, I don't think there was ANY DATA about how many particles the masks attracted and blocked. I read that they later clarified: “Many commentators have claimed that a recently updated Cochrane review shows that ‘masks don’t work,’ which is an inaccurate and misleading interpretation,” Karla Soares-Weiser, the editor in chief of the Cochrane Library, said in a statement. “The review examined whether interventions to PROMOTE mask wearing help to slow the spread of respiratory viruses,” Soares-Weiser said, adding, “Given the limitations in the primary evidence, the review is NOT able to address the question of whether mask wearing itself reduces people’s risk of contracting or spreading respiratory viruses.” For examples of actual mask testing, you can research "NIOSH approved" for example. In the US, if a mask is NIOSH approved it means that it was scientifically tested and shown to be effective at blocking and capturing VERY SMALL PARTICLES like dust and aerosols we breathe (that can carry viruses). I've actually seen the testing being done--lots of tools and technology I don't understand, but I think it makes sense if you think of it like this--putting a barrier between you and harmful particles is one way to keep those particles away from you, and the less particles you are exposed to, the less likely you are to be harmed by those particles.

Right uo next to you without a filter on your face? The HEPAs won't clean the air in time in how quickly the infected breath will infect u. Same with RSV, TB, which is spreading everywhere, and flu. Multiple issues with this analysis. 1: If there are any gaps between the mask and the face, the infectious aerosols will almost completely circumvent the mask, severely compromising the intrinsic efficacy of the filtration material. 2: When the wearer is inhaling or exhaling, the air molecules are not exhibiting random motion. 3: When a microaerosol particle impacts a mask fiber, it doesn't necessarily get stuck. It is simply blown off and through the mask fiber, because remember-the wearer is exhaling.

I think masks do help at least a little, but I don't think they should be required by law. Same with vaccines, seatbelts, and bike/bicycle helmets etc. The news and public service announcements should make obvious the potential downsides of not using those protections, but making their use a requirement is like making a law that people MUST use a potholder when taking hot pans/dishes out of the oven? Most people will learn quickly enough what works even if they do or don't believe what older people in their family tell them? Kid: "Ouch! I keep burning my hand when I take food out of the oven!" Parent: "Try using a pot holder?" Kid: "I keep getting sick when I'm in public crowds!" Parent: "Don't touch your face until you can wash your hands. Avoid people who look or act sickly. Consider wearing a mask and maybe talk to your doctor about getting a vaccination." 🤷‍♂
