In the 1960s a Zambian patriot Edward Mukuka Nkoloso had a dream to launch a rocket that would send twelve astronauts, a space girl and cats to the moon.
He hoped to beat United States and Russia space programs at the height of space race.
He took his Afronauts, short for African Astronauts through strenuous training.
But due to lack of funding, his project never took off.

In india when we launch our first rocket we carry those rocket parts on bicycle on dirt roads but since then we travelled to mars orbit that too in our first attempt...you need courage to dream, courage to start first! Long before Wright Bros, Da Vinci designed a model for flying that wasn't successful and had many loopholes, his contemporary may called him crack-pot but now we recognise him as genius before his times. Mukaku was from a place where there is no technology in cars but he thought of a rocket that goes to mars!

Meet Mukuka Nkoloso a Zambian whose dream was to take 12 African Astronauts, a space girl and 2 cats to Mars. He founded his own Space Academy 7 miles from Lusaka. Nkoloso hoped to beat the United States and Russia space programs at the height of the space race: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3uzSSe8RP58.html

Wow, thanks for this. What a story. If I previously harbored any doubts that Nkoloso was anything but a madman, your documentary has removed them. Thanks for the LOL's!

This poor idiot wasn't by far the only one: in the Congo they fired a home-made rocket, hoping to would carry rats "into orbit" (need I mention that this fine spaceship blew up like a bomb and that the "dignitaries" standing around cheered this "great sucess"?). In Uganda they're also trying to build a rocket from scrap metal and old oil barrels. These people are really like small children - mostly harmless, friendly, but bone from the neck upwards. I once watched a farmer selling water melons on the roadside. (Of course) he forgot to pull the breaks and the vehicle rolled down the hill where he had "parked". Can you guess what he did? He threw melons after the escaping car, trying so to stop it... want a good laugh? Come to Africa 8o[|]

Probably what he did had no foundation, no base. But he was innocent dreamer, he had no harm to anybody. That's why people smile when they hear or see about his ideas. Rest in peace, good man.

Yes, the dream a lot in those parts. At times it takes a good kick in the butt to wake them up or bring them back into reality - trust me: I lived there and I have worked, those people and and many good boots were ruined when noticing that dreamy expression in those daft eyes.

@@michaelrose93 He was a national hero for his role in the independence movement. He was highly educated and a lifelong Zambian patriot who contributed to his society on multiple levels. This one thing is what most people outside Zambia know about Nkoloso, but he was more than that. Europe and the US will not say what was behind this because they would be the ones to be ridiculed. Nkoloso's space program was a screen. On purpose, he sought to be ridiculed so that they would not realize that in that place they trained the revolutionary warriors who achieved the independence of Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. That is why Nkoloso is considered a hero of independence.

Pause this video around the 4 minute mark. You will see a old volkswagen beetle in the background. That old car has a better chance of evolving into a Transformer from the cartoon all on its own and flying to the moon and back before these people will achieve the technology for something as basic as indoor plumbing.
