I apply a bead of silicon around the mask once it is on. works well but it has been on my face ever since.

Someone should make a respirator that allows me to have a beard and protect my lungs. Why must I compromise? Why can't it seal on other parts of the face/neck? Hmmmm......

BrokedDownPalace Firefighters have a respirator called the SCBA positive pressure which blows air into your mask and it solves the issue with non sealed bearded masks

Basically go loose fitting hood with PAPR- just make sure it still gives you the required protection factor for the work environment.

As a medic, it bugs me that we have to shave because there are beards galore in the ER. Plus, how many times do you actually get informed that the pt you're with has tb (for example)? In my experience, freakin' NEVER til two or three days have passed and you get flagged for an exposure risk. Making medics shave our beard is ridiculous.

I performed a successful fit test on a bearded bloke wearing a 3M 6800 with glasses. I couldn't get a seal with a number of face filtering (disposable) respirators.

Interesting....I had just the bottom part of a goatee, but trimmed enough that I passed a fit test.

Will be working at northrop grumman as an aircraft painter and I have a 7-8 inch beard I have been working on for 2 years is it possible to keep? Also women love it another reason I want to keep it...

Put your mask on. Wear it for 2-3 hours. Shave beard so it fits inside the pressure lines (leaves you with uperlip and below lip). And your set. This way my mask seals and I dont look 12

so a beard is a limitation to a degree for the pursuit of careers that require a whole face breathing apparatus-- however are there not people with in the us army (with beards) who have proven they can wear a gas mask safely?

Jackelhog If you wear a half face respirator, facial hair affects the seal. With a full face respirator it doesn't. The big fit test in the U.S. uses a coughing gas. If there is any opening caused by hair, they know.

Shaving is pointless. In an emergency, do you really think you will be shaving your face prior to putting on your respirator?

Keep your beard shaven at all times. Done. I keep mine shaven to a point it doesnt touch the seals of the mask (upperlip and below the lip). Makes me not look like 12 and I still get a good seal.

Yes I am not getting rid of my beard. In fact at the moment I am letting it get longer, while this pestilence is running a muck. You really need a device that covers the whole head. I just wonder if a plague doctor mask would be the answer.

I wish I could show this to all the chumps that argue with me about military facial hair regulations. I’m not military but I guess my dozens of hours of osha training and safety training doesn’t mean anything

I was in the military for 8 years and I had a beard the whole time. I never had an issue getting a seal for the gas chambers. Education on the device you're using is the most important but continue to push the narrative.

The beard IS filter material! :) Maybe the filter isn't proper. Air will follow path of least resistance.

I feel the same way I barely have a beard let alone mustache, but I do have a good amount of chin years, and they want me to possibly shave that 🤦🏾‍♂️.

Okay. Now do a test with someone as a thick of a beard as mine. That guy's beard was patchy and scruffy. I've been wanting to test myself because I am wondering if a thick beard can form a seal. Yet, no one has shown me otherwise. I have yet to see an actual demonstration. Only the usual response, "No way is it gonna work."

@Thunder Life Studios actually, since the last two years with COVID and everything, I self fit tested with two different P-100 masks. My beard hasn't been as thick as this photo in the last two years. But I have tested various thicknesses of facial hair. I found after about a quarter of an inch of facial growth I'm able to form my own seal. That could be different with everyone depending on how thick their facial hair is.

Would love to know which masks you've had the best luck with! I haven't gotten a fit test kit yet but so far I've had the best luck with flo masks as far as it subjectively seeming like a good fit, possibly because it sits above my chin and I have some skin exposed there, but I have a feeling it won't be good enough to pass a fit test.
