So, basically, I’ll try to explain as best I can, but this absolutely something that should’ve been on your consent waiver before getting your treatment, and if it wasn’t your technician likely wasn’t properly educated on the risks of the procedure. Paradoxical Hypertrichosis doesn’t happen very commonly, generally under 10% of people who get laser hair removal will end up with PH. That said, different studies say different things about how it’s developed and what factors lead to higher odds. Some emphasize things like race, sex, age and skin pigmentation, others preferring to inspect underlying conditions, hormonal imbalances, or even medications taken, and some even focusing on the lasers themselves from the type of laser to the techniques used in the treatments. What we do know definitively is the areas that are primarily affected in both men and women. For women, the “danger zones,” for Paradoxical Hypertrichosis are the sideburns, cheeks, upper lip, chin, and neck. For men, it is the back, shoulders, and chest. It’s not quite known why the areas are so different, but it could be because these are the most commonly requested areas for laser hair removal and thus are the most common areas for PH to happen. It’s also noted that certain underlying conditions and medications can make you more likely to end up with PH, though as mentioned earlier these can vary between studies. In terms of underlying conditions, it’s suspected that women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Non-Classic Congenital Andrenal Hyperplasia, Cushing’s Syndrome, or Androgen-Secreting Tumor could possibly be more at risk for developing Paradoxical Hypertrichosis. There are not any specific conditions listed for men, but most of the medications do apply to both. The medications listed are corticosteroids, antihistamines, tetracycline antibiotics, and certain oral contraceptives. They recommend to consult with a doctor and pause any such medications before any laser treatments to minimize the risk of developing PH. While this video was very confident with their information, there actually isn’t any definitive information stating specifically middle eastern women are more at risk. Dark skinned people tend to develop PH more commonly than light skinned people do, which is why certain studies suggest correlations in skin tone, but there are none that specifically state that certain ethnicities or races are more at risk than others. Now, it may sound counterintuitive, but the treatment for Paradoxical Hypertrichosis is laser hair removal. Ideally you’ll want to find a physician run salon, preferably one that has knowledge on the condition or is willing to read up on it, because you’ll need to specifically request a laser with built in cooling. They essentially need to make sure that the temperature stays even all throughout, preferably by alternating short pulses with cold. It may require a few sessions ons to see results, you may even need some medical testing to see if you have any hormonal problems going on causing some extra androgen production, but overall that would be the treatment method. Hope that’s helpful in any way, sorry it’s so long, I didn’t know how else to get all the information in without just linking complicated articles.
This literally happened to me. I’m half Arab & half Jamaican, so I’m naturally hairy. I got a package for full face laser with the Yag laser. All my hair came back and thicker. I have a full beard now that I have to frequently shave, pluck & at home ipl to keep under semi-control. I hate it. I’ve done electrolysis as well! It still came back. I think I may also have PCOS that’s causing it.
omggg no stop?? really? you meant ND yag laser do you know the machine name/company name of that laser 😭omg I have the same exact problem as yours, And from reasearch I found out I would get rid of it through ND yaglaser or alexandrite laser. And when I was speaking to 5 dermatologist here, they all said I should opt for diode laser. I'm so confused. I tried 5session of Electrolyisis and 1st two weeks the hair came out really thin and fine and when then my electrolysis shifted to some other country. But now that same has grown back thick? And the dermatologist told me If you had done Electrolyisis that hair wouldn't even come out forget bout being thick. I was wondering if paradoxical hair growth happens with electrolysis aswell. Im so confused, any advice and suggestions would mean a lot . Like Im tired I have burnt so much money for this
I'm so sorry, that's awful!!! I got laser done on my face too. The sideburns and upper lip areas aren't too bad, but I have like two straight lines of hair on my jaw because of the laser. I never tried shaving because it would truly feel like a beard then and break me mentally. But waxing every two weeks isn't the best either. I also have pcos but wasn't diagnosed at the time of getting laser done. I was wondering if electrolysis would work since it has for some people in the comments, but I'm so annoyed that there isn't any cure for people like us. It hurts even more because pcos isn't curable and the mental and physical toll it takes is another issue!
My grandmother and other family members warns me and my other younger cousin/siblings not to shave cuz it’ll just grow back and more thicker too and it’ll look horrible
There is a laser treatment for hair loss, I had it for my alopecia, but of course it's a different laser used for healing skin, scars and hair. Damn I had it in half my head and that part starting started growing the hair like twice its volume and thickness, even more than before the hair loss. I don't know if it works for testosterone hair loss, cuz I'm a woman and my case was bc of stress bit u can search it up ❤
I have had this happen to me and I am neither a man nor middle eastern, but a greek woman. Thank God for electrolysis, it cleared up the mess, and now nobody can believe that there was a point where I had to wax my entire face and neck, from the eyes to the collar bone almost!

@@dangbits I can feel your pain, but don’t despair. Rest assured, paradoxical hair regrowth doesn’t happen with electrolysis. What you are experiencing is probably growth of new hairs. You must understand that the growth cycle of each hair is about two years long. So even if you killed the hairs that were initially visible on your face, other latent hairs came out, and you have to treat these too until all hair follicles are destroyed. Also, once burning the follicle isn’t usually enough, that’s why the same hair comes back, but thinner and weaker. So if you take into account that you have to target all visible hairs multiple times, and then the up to then dormant hairs that weren’t visible then too, you realize why electrolysis is such a long and arduous process. It took me three years to rid my face and neck completely of hair. There are two caveats though: 1) the technician’s skill. If they are incompetent, they are merely yanking the hair out. The fact, however, that your hairs came back thinner proves that they were appropriately treated. 2) under no circumstances should you mess with waxing, thermolysis, laser etc, while undergoing electrolysis, as you are undoing all the hard work you are doing and stimulating more dormant follicles. If you are in a bind just cut of the hairs that are bothering you, or shave them. This way you are just getting rid of the dead part of the hair and aren’t messing with its roots. Good luck on your hair removal journey! PS: it might sound weird, but I wouldn’t trust what most dermatologists are saying on the matter since they have a vested interest and want more clients and money. That’s why they are pushing laser so aggressively. Moreover, you don’t have to take my word for it, if you consult the FDA, you will see that the ONLY method that qualifies as PERMANENT hair REMOVAL, is electrolysis and not laser.
Could you please explain what you got done? I'm struggling with increased facial hair, especially on my chin and lower jaw. It's embarrassing and the frequent waxing makes me breakout too
@@twinkle7389 no, waxing is a no no! It stimulates the hair follicles to produce more hair, and it can contribute to skin sagging because of all the yanking of your delicate facial skin! I suggest you find a skilled and experienced aesthetician in your area who specialises in electrolysis and invest the time and money to get a hair free face. You will need to be patient, but you will get results, trust me. In the meantime stay away from waxing; you can cut the hairs with scissors or even shave them. This doesn’t affect the hair follicle since you are only cutting the dead part of the hair off . Good luck!
@@Tatusiek_1no. 🙄Laser has different effects on different skin tones because unlike lighter skin melanin is produced when darker skin gets irritated and often times stays there.
Yup. That happened to me. I got laser hair removal on my face and my facial hair did not only came back completely in some areas like my chin it came back dark and thick, which I didn’t have before.. it’s frustrating
I have pcos but I got laser hair removal done before I realized I had it. İt worked on most of my body and it worked well on my sideburns. But it backfired on my chin and lower jaw so bad, that the hair's so coarse and thick, and it grows in patches. Almost like they're following the lines the laser head had moved. Only option is waxing it frequently but it is so fricking frustrating and draining
I really wish I heard this earlier, I am west Asian, and struggling with hitrusim - it isn't genetic and non of my family struggle with this. I am currently getting laser hair removal on my face and underarms but it is not doing anything for my face! I've spent so much. I was told laser would be great for pale skin and dark hair but not for me so far even after 8 sessions at a certified clinic! I am considering electrolysis but I'm a bit scared. Shaving, waxing and threading just causes more problems and is expensive long term - I am only good with threading my brows, no irritation there
Electrolysis, if you break it down, takes about as long as laser for work and is just as expensive. The only difference is that with laser you go like every 4 weeks but with electrolysis, you have to make a commitment to go every week for MONTHS. However electrolysis is the only form of hair removal that is actually permanent bc it goes thru every single pore and damages the hair follicle so it doesn't grow back
Electrolysis saved my sanity after I had this happen to me with laser. When people meet me now they can’t believe there was a time I had to wax my entire face and neck after laser caused very fine hair to grow into a beard😮😢! There is one caveat though: you must find a competent and skilled aesthetician to perform electrolysis on you, otherwise you would be throwing your money away.
Ohh God. I've had 6 sessions of face laser hair removal😭. I am from India and I have hirsuitism. Laser seems to be working okay but what if the hair comes back in a while😭😭😭😭
Shaving causes the hair to grow back quicker and thicker. Tug the hairs out. Uncomfortable but thegrowing hair will take more time to grow and will be lighter and thinner.

Ok for all you darker skin lovelies that would have to use the IR laser, when i first did treatments my hair eventually grew back worse. I learned later it was because the power was too low. Low power IR light has been shown to encourage hair growth and there are current studies to see if it can be used on people with alopecia. I tried laser hair removal again but with much higher power. It hurt like hell but at least I'm not a teddy bear. Some hair growth is back but I can live with it and don't have to shave anymore.
Generally speaking, men should have more facial/body hair than women due to higher testosterone levels. That said, some women especially those of Indian and Middle-eastern descent are predisposed to hirsutism.
Why though. Could you please link a article or explain why? As a laser specialist myself we are trained to treat the right hair/skin type, adjust the laser parameters and prevent exces heat on the skin. Those factors can play a big role in triggering paradoxical hair growth. We never had issues with middle eastern men. But i am interested because i have yet encountered a evidence based article that says so.
If only I had seen this warning many years ago. I have fair skin and very dark hair and after several laser sessions I realized that although the hair was lighter and finer in texture there was more of it, almost as if the number of hair follicles had multiplied. After so much psychological trauma, heartbreak, endless crying and money poured into living up to today’s beauty standards, (although not the most pleasant) Electrolysis has been the only way to get the growth under control. My experience with laser is probably not common but it’s worth taking into consideration if you’re on the fence about it.
Thank God my dermatologist adviced me to not do laser hair removal to my face😅 she told me if you have psoc it's not gonna work because I have a hormonal problem. I know a cousin who has the same disease and did laser hair removal and end up with thicker hair.
I’m a middle eastern woman, yet facial hair removal works great for me- how about maybe elaborating how common this is with scientific bg and not just generalizing it
@@peppasfrontface_ Yess I absolutely get your point. However, I have a much darker skin tone but it works absolutely fine for me but idk. Also only specifying it on middle eastern woman doesn’t make any sense bcs there’s many other regions with scientifically proven high melanin levels. Otherwise, there must be another reasoning behind this.
I'm disappointed, this is very misleading! I got this problem as a Caucasian, a 2 on the Fitzpatrick scale. This short videos don't give the full info.
@@Harlow_Khmer my skin tone is pale white. My hair is brown, but very thick. Tried to remove it from my bikini area with laser. Wasn't effective even though I have the right "colours" for it. It seems to me it grew back stronger.
One thing that I will say, Dr. Shereene: I think men and women of Mediterranean descent have the THICKEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL heads of hair! As a woman of Northern European extraction, my hair has always been fine, but I am relatively hairless everywhere else. I still need to have electrolysis on my upper lip and chin every now and then! It ALWAYS grows back!
I am Black and have hirsutism. I gave up on laser treatments because I did not find it suitable for me and my very dark skin tone. Experienced laser burns twice and stopped. I just started electrolysis and really like the results so far.
If an inexperienced laser therapist is afraid to burn the client, while lowering the settings below the minimum settings, or if a machine with an old crystal is used that does not produce the necessary power, or if cheap Chinese machines are used, then this is likely to happen. If, however, laser therapist uses high-quality machines and therapist with experience and knows his/her business, then such stimulation of hair growth happens very rarely.
Too short & not enough info. Also confused why the guy hasn't shaved. Laser requires shaving, otherwise the hair will burn. I didn't think any reputable laser spot would work on a woman's face. Mine would not, regardless of ethnicity. Electrolysis is the option for women's face. (And hair should be there, not plucked or waxed.)
See, I dislike this weird hair I have in my face but after getting ingrown hair I decided that I might as well just accept it. Not risking clear skin for hair removal.
Using wax or similar hair removal usually only hurts bad the first time as the roots on the hair has never been pulled out and so it can be painful the very first time you wax... Yet no other method reduces the hairs thickness or reduces the amount of visible growing hair as waxing / sugaring does. I have waxed my legs and underarms and bikini line for decades, and now there is no hair left to wax... My Dr said every pore that bares hair has a limited number of hair seeds, once they have been removed or dried up the hair is no longer coming back... Waxing regularly stops roots from growing on the hair follicle...every hair has roots and some waxing stores even show you the roots under a 600 times scope so you see why it hurts so much the first time compared to every other visit... The second time I got my armpits done I was bracing for extreme pain and they straps came off like melted butter - the ladies removed them without my even noticing they'd been taken off already.
True. I’ve been waxing my underarms, hands and legs for about 10 years. What used to be a month’s growth now takes around more than 2 months, even then the hairs are thin and have noticeable distance between them. I had very thick black hairs and underarms were a bitch, even thinking about them used to make me nervous and sweaty before my waxing session. Now underarms are like a breeze. I’ve finally gathered the courage to start my bikini wax sessions and I hope it will get easier in next 2-3 years. Laser treatment was my choice for years but was too expensive for me. Now that I can afford it I don’t see the need to do it anymore. I shave my peach fuzz on special occasions, thread my upper lip, eyebrows regularly and pluck chin hairs. I’m glad I avoided shaving and stuck to waxing. Considering the stress, time and cost of different methods waxing is the best one but people brush it off cz of pain.
I have PCOS which already causes increased hair growth. I really considered laser hair removal for such a long time but now I'm convinced this might happen to me because my hair already grows excessively :/

I am Indian and I also suffered the same consequences. It’s so depressing that doctors prescribe treatments just out of greed and not explaining the side effects before hand. I am still continuing to take laser because doctors say there is no other solution. I seriously don’t know what to do.😢
Stop the laser immediately and find a skilled aesthetician who performs electolysis. It is the ONLY, and I mean it, the ONLY permanent hair removal method. If you don’t believe me, you can check the official FDA site with regard to hair removal!
From what I've read and heard, this is basically because the laser isnt effective enough to inactivate all the follicles and it actually activates dormant follicles. Dealing with that, according to my Derm at least is making sure you are using the Yag laser and having more treatments to inactivate any potentially activated follicles.
As an electrologist and I get women who have had laser and start telling me these stories I just shake my head in agreement and then have to explain to them why we don't recommend laser for anyone's face. It's an exellent tool for areas of hair growth that start during puberty but not good for hormonal imbalanced hairs such as chin hairs
That happens if 1- the hair on the face is peach fuzz kind of hair, with little to no color 2- Or if there is an error with the energy used (aka the fluence and the pulse duration of the laser ) … being the last session is less than the one before it.. Or if there was a big jump from medium to high setting.. Or the energy used was too insufficient to begin with 3rd reason.. The area was not cooled properly ( using the air or the cryogen provided with the device ) If you don't have hirsutism but the hair on your face have some color and it is annoying you.. Do like a 2-3 sessions only ( there will still be hair but it's less annoying and kinda colorless) be very careful though and go to a good clinic
I am an Asian and had laser hair removal and sometimes the hair grow back after a section, and I didn’t have hair in those areas for a while Turn out the laser also act as a hair growth factor, thank god it didn’t grow back as thick and strong as before
Can you please tell me more about this because this happened to me. Not immediately but seven years later hair started growing back in a different place and worse than it was when I got laser hair removal the first time.
I’m Turkish and idk I mean.. I can’t tell if it’s my PCOS or my genetics but laser helps me keep hair away for long periods of time. Maybe it’s not permanent and it regrows but it’s better than waking up every morning and plucking and shaving. It’s time consuming, causes acne and is very embarrassing tbh. I’ve been getting laser sessions periodically to keep things under control. Some grow back I’m not sure. For me it did help. I’d have to completely to stop to see if it worked. I think I’ll always need maintenance lasers like monthly.
Can you do a video what that, please? Like what men and women should pick for facial hair removal treatment? I heard all my life electrolysis is the best for women facial hair since they are mostly peach fuzz, blonde and thin.
Why get rid of peach fuzz. It pisses me off. Cuz they can just wake up and live they life without waking up and feeling your face for any new hairs sprouting up or if there is one on my cheek that NOONE told me about all day!!!!
This happened to me. It’s not specific to middle eastern people, it’s for people with thicker and darker hair. The reason being hormonal hair. The hair bulbs get activated when laser treatment is done. So I was told. I got laser on my jaw and neck. My neck is now filled with thick hair, when it had none prior to the laser sessions.
@@innitbruv-lascocomics9910It sounds like a genetic hormonal issue that is inherited. As in hormone imbalances being very common. Maybe the foods, like chickpeas have lots of androgens in them. Whole wheat, too. And artichokes.
Doctors need to treat the causes of hormone imbalances, even as they remove hair with these laser treatments. The skin must have lots of androgen receptor cells that are sensitive, and get activated. And more doctors need to address this.
