Woman here - I gravitate towards people who look like they own their own style. Not a certain style - just someone with their own. It's makes a good first impression because it suggests the person is confident in who they are. Confidence is the thing most people are looking for! Just find what makes you comfortable and confident and the rest will happen.

My impression is that your tendency to pick dark/neutral colors is you knowing your body type is smaller, so blacks and grays give off a more masculine vibe as opposed to bright flashy colors. It works for you honestly, i dont think your current style is bad at all. What you can do to accentuate your style is use accessories, a watch, sunglasses, jacket etc. Also you can have a semi colorless outfit with shoes that provide a bit of the pzazz. Also i forgot to mention, if you dont like colors, white is a great option. Dark pants with a simple white T is clean.

As a guy who's somewhat into fashion now. When I was first getting into it, it helped to buy and wear clothes that I thought were cool no matter bad they looked to others. As I got older I started to look up outfit types such as layered outfits - jacket, inside shirt etc. Outfits worn by models can give clarity into developing your own style. Also have friends that will tell you ""That pants and that shirt do not work with each other". You get embarrassed but it helps you learn what colours and materials compliment each other.

lmao alex standing outside the fitting room like a child waiting for his mom’s opinion 😭 Anyways I totally feel you. I hated shopping for myself at first and didn’t like wearing anything that showed skin. This is the first Summer I’ve ever worn shorts actually. This is what helped me: I usually go into the store and grab a SHIT ton of clothes. Just anything I think I might somewhat like in multiple sizes. Then I spend forever trying it all on and usually find at least one or two items. It helps if someone is with you (like your sister) to give you opinions, but also trust yourself! If you like it, buy it! Eventually it gets easier and you find stuff you like and don’t have as many clothes to try on. My biggest tip is make sure it REALLY fits you. I have like 5 pairs of jeans that are too big because I didn’t spend long enough making sure they fit. Aaaand I never wear them. Whoops. Also start with closet staples! I’m not a guy but I like to have a pair of black jeans, a pair of denim jeans, a black t-shirt, some basic graphic t-shirts, a black longsleve, some nice sweaters, etc. Stuff that goes with everything! Then I can start branching out and getting more unique pieces and pairing them with the staples. Like an orange collared jacket (unique) with a black shirt and denim jeans. Or a mesh white top (unique) with ripped denim shorts. Idk I still find fashion really hard and frustrating. I’m stuck with a ton of pieces I love but with nothing to go with them! So if anyone has advice that would be appreciated. Regardless, hopefully that helped somewhat! It’s all about confidence! Good luck!

I used to be super skinny and also hated showing my forearms, so I would always wear long-sleeves year-round, even in the hottest parts of summer. You just gotta rip the bandaid off and jump in, once you realize it's not as bad as you thought, everything will start to get a lot easier. My advice - just stick with plain looking basics in the beginning but mix up the colors. Get some earth tone pants (brown, green, burgundy, navy) and mix them up with alternating tops of complimenting colors (i.e. brown pants with navy sweater).

The red button up at Target was nice! It's ok to wear just different colors of the same style that you're comfortable in though. There is a lot of psychology behind how we dress and see ourselves, which makes things even harder if you also have sensory issues. On a different note, your sister saying you guys don't look alike was too funny 😆 You guys definitely have similar eyes, smiles and mannerisms from the little bit I've seen. For anyone else that struggles to feel comfortable having a shopping day for themselves or buying clothes in general, take small steps! If you are going to target for groceries, stop by the clothing section and try on one or two shirts! If you’re at a mall for food try on one pair of shoes. Even if you aren’t looking for anything specific try something on for fun! sometimes it can help get rid of the dissatisfaction of not finding anything/ not having the energy because you get used to the actions of just trying things on to simply do it!! Just a thought that I do myself and it has really helped me enjoy clothing and experiencing trends even if I don’t actually buy anything! ❤

I think that having a base black/grey outfit and adding pops of colors that fit well with you is a great way to trick yourself into putting more thought or care into your outfits. Blue, red, bright yellow, and green all seem to look really nice on you - and all work well with black bases. I also think that finding something that fits well and getting it in different colors helps bulk out without being too much stimulus of a whole wardrobe change. Side note - the button ups looked really good on you!

A self improvement series is great! I know getting a gf is a big goal, but it could be good to concentrate on the things you have control of (finding your style, your home, hobbies) and finding stuff you like. I get the loneliness, but ultimately changing your life to fit a non present person who you havent met yet isnt as productive as it might seem. You can make this series about maybe facing some stuff outside your comfort zone, if your entire life so far has been shaped around being on a computer. Finding your style, making your house a home, trying new things, hobbies, ultimately can make you feel more fulfilled. I'm cheering for you, i love you and your sister's vibes, it's great fun.

As someone who also falls into only monochrome colors, I feel the easiest colors to branch into are the blues, maybe dark red/maroons or even browns too. Or to start wearing more whites and light grey and try to get into gentle pastels, or light tans and beiges or khaki. It took quite a few years to ease away from actively wearing literally only black and at most a graphic tee, and maybe a single color flannel overshirt, but I’ve recently noticed I have a bunch more greys and blues and reds. Past me would have laughed so hard at the idea of me wearing anything but black with white accents lol

Honestly the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you're wearing. A really easy 'fit' I've seen for guys is a graphic tee, a short sleeved button up, and some jeans or other pants. I get overwhelmed going into stores and spending hours outside shopping, so I'd recommend finding a few stores online in your price point, setting a 30 minute timer, then only shopping for that time so you don't get stuck scrolling forever. You can also limit yourself by sorting for your size and only checking, say, the first 5 pages. Get 3-5 tees and 2-3 button-ups (if you like that combo), 2-3 pairs of pants and you're set. Also, one solid pair of shoes from something like Converse or Nike can pair with every outfit. Good luck, Alex!

I relate to a lot of what you say. I was a pretty skinny guy too, and have been working out the past year. Definitely noticeable changes but I still look pretty skinny... which hurt my confidence. But after having a few relationships, I noticed something in myself that needed to change, it was the insecurities. Everything I thought was lame about myself or stupid, they loved. Every little body movement i made that i was hyper focusing on to not look stupid, they loved. They loved me, which taught me... that i need to love myself too. Loving yourself is attractive to woman, and being yourself is attractive to woman. It really is that simple. While you're working on being the best version of yourself, you'll find someone who loves everything about you.

If you're insecure, work on being comfortable because when you're comfortable in your clothes and most importantly in your skin that enables you to be more confident. In my opinion, which isn't worth much, it's more about the confidence someone has that gets my attention more than what they look like. Wear your pants high, makes you appear taller and put together. Your confidence will grow when you feel good in what you're wearing, dont stress too much on trends, graphics, or brands. Shoe Recs: slip on vans, chucks, and a pair of oxfords (I'd go with a dusty seude with the colors you tend to lean towards) Cotton button ups over t-shirts will give that more adult look without being too over the top. Also could go with a jean or leather jacket if you dig thay kind of stuff. In the winter you can get a long wool coat either on a dusty blackish gray or tan (if you want the color). You can stick with simple darker colors but maybe look into textures for the shirts...and then one or two accent colors you like. A capsule wardrobe makes it MUCH easier to figure out what to wear and there is no reason you cant have three of the same jeans if you like the fit. It also would be similar to what you already do. Once you have those staples you can decide if you want to accessorize...maybe a simple necklace or even rings if youre feeling bold. Maybe a scarf in a bit of color to go with the wool coat? Then the rest is just how you carry yourself... appropriate confidence in the space you occupy is huge.

I WAS THE 1,000 LIKE. ALL HAIL ME. But also, I dabble in fashion a lot (I am also a man) so if you do want specific advice, I can offer it. Some general good outfit advice I can give for men though (especially those on the slimmer end): wear plain t-shirts from target ( they're like $6-10) and wear a long-sleeve button-up over them, do not button the shirt or u will not be a vibe. Pair that with jeans that are on the more tighter-fighting side. For shoes, I am a HUGE fan of boots of any color. Typically your outfit colors just depend on your taste, but for the most part you want your shirt to be lighter or the same color as the button-up (THAT YOU DONT BUTTON) that you're pairing it with. For the jeans, dark matches almost everything, but if you go dark on top, light on bottom, that works well too. You can also wear accessories to make your outfit 110% better, but not required. If you want more advice, I'd be more than glad to give it.

I grew up not picking any style or my own clothes and have started branching out. I personally recommend if something catches your eye, even if you don’t think it looks good on you, just buy it anyway. The biggest thing that seems to get in the way is a sense of “this isn’t my style”, and the response is “of course it isn’t my style, dumbass, I haven’t bought it and started wearing it yet”. Once you do start wearing it it becomes your style and you feel less weird about wearing it and others stop thinking it’s weird that you’re wearing it

Those light blue shoes would pop with your current black/grey wardrobe (just don't wear them when doing chicken-related chores lol). And the red shirt actually looked really good, but it looked like you needed a size up for it to fit better around your chest. If it gets too baggy at the bottom, you can tuck it into your pants or take it in at the seams a tiny bit just at the bottom, using a couple safety pins on each side. I used to have a lot of clothing insecurity as well, and the best way to overcome it is to just wear stuff anyways. Like, when you think "I like this" but then put it on and think "I look stupid", just wear it anyways. You'll get used to the new styles/colors and start to get a better sense of what you actually like to wear. One of the other things I did when trying to branch out was go to places like Goodwill and pick out the most "ridiculous" looking clothing items to try on. A lot of them were bust, but I was surprised at how many things actually looked good even though they looked crazy on the rack. And just trying on a bunch of crazy stuff helps you come out of your insecurity a bit. A nice collared shirt will feel a lot less silly after you've tried on a leopard print velvet jacket.

I was exactly the same as you were at your age. Skinny twink wearing all dark clothing. Now I have tons of colours and styles. Once you actually stop caring what others think of you and just wear whatever the hell you want you'll be much happier in your skin. Took me a while to get there tho. I still have a ton of black and grey tho.

You already have a style. You like simple and comfortable. If you want to stay in your comfort zone but look more slick, buy better quality of what you like. Or buy mid-tier quality and get it tailored to perfect fit.

I can hardcore relate with shopping for 2 hours and finding nothing you like. I like you in the shirt at 4:37, but i would wear it over another shirt and not button it. I'm a woman though, and my boyfriend says I have a shitty sense of style, so take what I say with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, if you don't like the clothes, it doesn't matter what other people say. You don't have to change to be more appealing, and I think you know that. This whole series feels like a good meme, and I love every second of it. You know damn well there's nothing "wrong" with you. But there is definitely some kind of growth happening here, 10/10. You're leaving your comfort zone, and it's good for you. Also, listen to Emily, her feedback is excellent.

I HATE shopping for myself. But, If you're accepting suggestions, I'd recommend that you go back and try on some of those graphic tees. If you know your size, you can order online. Also, long or 3/4 length sleeves is a good look. If you like the look of straight leg jeans, try on some high top vans. Your look isn't 'bad' per se. You are just lacking in quantity of fits. It's not unacceptable to have the same shirt in a few colors.

It took me a long time to get over my insecurities about clothes. There are definitely clothes that fit certain body types better than others, but ultimately what draws a person in is confidence. If you arent feeling your clothes, try out something that you think doesnt fit your 'image' but you like anyway. It either grows on you or you hate it within a week. Also i disagree with your sister, consignment stores that funnel from brand names are the best places to get cheap clothes that look and feel nice but can change up your style without breaking the bank. Im not sure what ones are near you, but in ohio there is a place called Discount fashion warehouse and a ton of brands (the limited brands, express, banana republic, j.crew, etc). Even just going to the places closer towards the more wealthy areas will have good selections if you stick with goodwill.

I am fairly short as a guy... 5'3 I find that a lot of clothes will just make me look even smaller... I personally would go for slim fitted polo-shirt & fitted jeans... Blue & black and maybe go for different colour polo's. (Purple, Pink so many colours) I find that I don't dress like others (tracksuit etc) but my girlfriend likes it!

I like graphic t-shirts usually with vibrant text (no graphics) I am from the UK so I don't know if you'd where them in the states but brands like Mercier & Nike Branded clothes tend to be a more comfortable wear and you feel a different way compared to wearing a cheap set that fade quickly. You may be insecure because all of these new generation outfits are flash & colorful but trust me invest is some nike or something and it will last you!

* turn jeans inside out before washing.. it's a thing.. (french laundry technique) keeps them from getting worn out faster especially when using a dryer. also: secondhand is great; just have to drop in often ; you'll find tag-on things; learn to skim quick & it's ok to leave w/o anything.. but sometimes you score very well.

I think you really need a dude who's super into clothes and fashion to go shopping with you next time, and even let him pick the stores (given a budget area). Another man might have the meta on closet staples that feel genuine to you, that you can style with more unique pieces/whatever is already in your closet.

I just swap out button ups daily.. but I now have a lot of button ups.

bro from one chicken keeper to another you need to just use one pair of shoes for doing chicken chores, the biosecurity issue is too large. I'd hate to wear my chicken shoes through avian flu pigeon shit in a parking lot, accidentally bringing it home to the ladies and getting them all sick. Some moron here didn't clean his chicken boots one time and caused an avian flu outbreak, egg prices went nuts for a month.

alex, i completely understand feeling super uncomfortable when you’re trying to alter your style. i often see something i love in theory, but it doesn’t feel like ‘me’ when i put it on. i think you have to feel comfortable but i also think there were multiple things in this video that definitely suited you, and weren’t too big of a difference from your normal style, including those shoes!

That book your sister got, The Bell Jar, I read it as a younger teen and I remember being disturbed by it for years. Then I grew up a little bit, actually dealt with depression and reread it as an adult and all I could think was "Damn this bitch had you fucked up for years and it's not even that bad" lol. Which might be sad, I'm not sure. It certainly draws a contrast lol

When i first started seeing my now husband, his then girlfriend comandeered his wardrobe and told him what to wear. He was confused when i didn't want him to do that. He had great style, he still does, he wears what he likes. I really like the clothes you're wearing here Alex, because you do - you don't have to try and change anything! Get more of what you like if you need more. I'm learning this way too late, but I also buy things from ebay or vinted and then they don't quite look right. Don't be disheartened. I hate shopping too, because my body isn't a coathanger or a mannequin and I always felt bad about things not fitting right. It IS WEIRD to clothes shop. Sometimes I think what I like is the gatherer part of it, the hoarding of stuff, because i like hunting for stuff. Maybe that's helpful? I dunno.

Firstly buy what you like. If you buy what you like you will be comfortable. Secondly go to a high end clothing store. A place where a shirt costs $200 and pants cost $400. They will fit you for what you are trying on and tell you what size you are for shirts and pants. Tell th3m thank you and leave with knowledge of your size. Then hit the outlet mall. You will know ypur size and get good quality clothing

The styles that you like that you think dont suit you are the ones you should buy. If you like it, thats your style. Confidence will come as you wear it more. Start with smaller elements to make it easy. Its ok to be picky but you gotta try stuff.

The red target shirt is a good fit for you actually. Maybe try some blues? Get some actual blue jeans. No Sketchers. Lol. Get some Adidas or Vans or something. Ultimately, find things youre comfy in. Get pieces that fit well, but are a color you normally dont go for. See an outfit online you like? Screenshot it for when you go shopping and find things similar. Easier said than done. As a chick, I loathe shopping. So good luck.
