I have never been a fan of Gayle or de Villiers who preferred money to representing the country but after hearing about Patrick Patterson, Winston Benjamin and reading about players like David Murray Austin etc I think Gayle and de Villiers were more practical

Patrick Patterson was inmensely popular in india in 1987 tour despite making the Indian batsmen dance to his pace

The only drug that affected pato was the the west indies cricket board and certain players. Pato is a nice humble youth. Nothing wrong with the man. Just depress by the way he been treated by west indies cricket. The they pato is talking about are the ones that destroyed his cricketing career and blame it on him . Very sensitive man. Remember when Pato got about nine wickets against Australia and was dropped for the next test ? And was replace by Harper. Who only ended up bowling few over with no wickets. Thought wi lost the test too.

So true and well said. Don't be afraid to call names though, Richie Richardson was the one behind Patterson's early exit from professional cricket.

The original article moved me. This is a great follow up conversation. Ultimately this is a mental health issue, but also wonder how much the drug culture in Kingston contributed to his decline. There are many similar stories of Caribbean players who went on the Rebel tours to South Africa who were shunned socially and took to drugs and alcohol sadly after that.

For me,the best way to describe Patterson was as a shooting star. He shone brightly and brilliantly for a while, and then he was gone. Why did Patrick Patterson's star not last? Why did he not survive at Test Cricket level as long as Roberts, Holding,Garner, etc? It's quite simple really. He obviously was not advised by the coaching staff to be more measured with his extreme pace. The end result was burnout. He came into the W I attack in 1986,and by 1990,he was already done. When he toured England that year, the England batsmen took him apart. He was a shadow of his former self 4 years earlier. It was sad to watch. That year,I could already see the beginning of the end of West Indies world dominance. They would go on to win for the next 5 years, but their demise began in 1990.

Dear Bharath,A thousand salutes to you brother. It’s so kind of you to find a lost legend while the cricket world is so ignorant of its own. Still remember the havoc Mr.Patterson created during WI-India tour.I can still remember how every India batsman scared to death while facing Patterson’s bowling. Thanks again for all your efforts in finding the legend.-Krishna

One of those Sundays when random cricketers' names pop up in the mind and I look them up. Started off with Gladstone Small, moved on to many others and finally landed up here. Damn. This is such a BEAUTIFUL story. Well done to the journalist. And yes, Patrick Patterson's was one of the actions we used to imitate when we were young. It was fun to get that front foot high up. Haha.

Thanks for this piece Jarod and Bharat. I had read Bharat's piece in the Indian express many years back. Just a fun thing for you guys to think about. Don't you think Bumrah's final delivery stride is much like Patterson's? During my childhood, I used to bowl like Patterson with a rubber ball. Most of my deliveries used to either bounce over the keeper or the keeper would be catching them on the full. Finally I gave up rather my friends stopped giving the ball to me.

I remember watching the 1991 series between England and the West Indies and he was brilliant in that series. I watched every game live on the BBC and I thought who is this guy?? We had our own fast bowler in that series who should have been one of our fastest bowlers for the next 10 years in David Lawrence. Unfortunately his career was ended by a horrific injury in New Zealand in 1992. Patterson should have been in the West Indies team for the next 5 years after that Australian tour in 92/93.

I think Patrick was the fastest bolder . But l think he need coaching . His bowling is out of control . No control spell of bowling.just fast an is the fastest. He don't think what kind of ball he was bpwling. Again l think he need coaching My comment that l am a Jamaican too no one look out for me I love cricket on running fastest. My school no one see me so is Patrick well promincing. Fastest learning too . 45:36

I’ve seen a bit of footage of his debut series against England in the Caribbean in 1986, the famous ‘ blackwash ‘ and he was quick!! Very quick!! England lost that series 5-0 and a large part of that was down to him.
