MIT grad shows how to factor quadratic expressions. If you want to skip to the shortcut method, jump to 5:06. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps.

The shortcut method ("The Magic X") helps you factor any tough quadratic that doesn't begin with x^2 but instead begins with 2x^2 or 3x^2, or 4x^2, etc.
1) IF YOUR QUADRATIC STARTS WITH X^2: It is faster to use the normal method for factoring in this case: trial and error. Say you have x^2 + 4x - 12. You need to find two numbers that multiply to the last number, -12, AND that add to the second coefficient, positive 4. First make a list of all pairs of numbers that multiply to -12. Then check which pair also adds to positive 4. Use the two numbers in this pair to write your factors.
2) IF YOUR QUADRATIC STARTS WITH 2X^2 OR 3X^2 OR 4X^2, ETC:
A) First check whether your leading coefficient (2 or 3 or 4, etc) is just an overall constant that you can factor out of every term in the quadratic. If it is, factor it out first and then use Method #1 above to factor the X^2 expression that remains.
B) If your leading coefficient cannot be factored out evenly from every term, it will be faster and easier to use the shortcut "magic X" method instead of Method #1. See this method explained at time 5:06 in this video.
For how to SOLVE QUADRATIC EQUATIONS by factoring, jump to the video: • How to Solve Quadratic...

Ryan Marvel huh? What do you mean its flipped when you watch a previously recorded video? The only time a video is flipped is when you are viewing a front facing preview screen on a camera, or when you are using the front camera on a phone. Otherwise it was a stylistic choice done in post processing. Or, at least in this case it was done as an aesthetic teaching method to allow interaction with the viewer and the board.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I've been helping my 15 yr. old son with Algebra 2, and he's currently factoring quadratics. Algebra 2 was the highest level of math I completed in college about 25 years ago (and I haven't used it since), so I've basically been relearning it while I'm helping him out. We were having a really hard time factoring whenever the x^2 had a coefficient and there was no GCF for abc. He had shown me the "magic X" technique for simpler quadratic equations, but didn't know how to apply it for the harder ones like the one you demonstrated. So thanks to your tutorial and a couple of practice problems, we were finally able to nail it. As a GenX parent I can't be more thankful to have virtual tutors like yourself accessible in a moment's notice on RU-vid. Back in my day, you were pretty much dead if you didn't understand a math concept/application and 1) your math teacher never explained it clearly and 2) you had nobody in your family that was a math wiz. So thanks a million!

Thank you. Thank you. I was teaching high school algebra and factoring 30 years ago and learned the X factor (for when the x squared has a coefficient that makes it more complicated). The student who taught this to the class called it "Texas" style, having moved from Texas to N. California. Now I'm in my 70's helping teenage grandchildren with their trigonometry at the community college. My memory is not so great anymore and we got stuck on factoring quadratics for about a week. I am so glad I found your excellent video. Everything else I looked at on RU-vid fell short of that final Texas method for solving the more complicated problems. You are genius! and I can once again look good for my grandkids.

For the final problem 3x² + 10x - 8, if you had an inflated version of 6x² + 20x - 16, why is it with this method you show that if you choose not to instantly remove the GCF of 2, the answer turns out to be exactly the same as 3x² + 10x - 8, and only if you do choose to remove the GCF of 2 right away that you would get the appropriate 2(x+4)(3x-2) by the end. 6 x (-16)= -96. making the equation x² + 20x - 96 with the factors being +24/-4. Insert into brackets to be (x+24)(x-4). Divide by the 6. (x+24/6) (x-4/6) and reduce for (x+4/1) (x-2/3). Move the denominators overs for (x+4)(3x-2). But I am not sure where the original GCF of 2 disappeared to by going this route. It appears the reducing deletes it, but leaving it unreduced doesn't help either. Is it merely an easily avoidable flaw of the method? or am I misunderstanding something about it that would make it possible? Using the grouping method, choosing not to instantly factor out the GCF has no bearing as it can be done later, but this one doesn't seem to allow it.

No need to memorize anything but the quadratic solution formula for ax^2+bx+c=0, which is x=[-b±√(b^2-4ac)]/2a. Memorize this formula. Now to factor (2x-3)(5x+4)=10x^2-7x-12. Set 10x^2-7x-12=0 and solve for x=(7±√529)/20=(7±23)/20=3/2 or -4/5. Thus (x-3/2)(x+4/5)=0 and we can multiply this by anything we want such as 10=2*5 and not change anything. 2*5*(x-3/2)(x+4/5)=(2x-3)(5x+4)=0 and we get back the original factors. Study this throughly and become enlightened.

I prefer using the sides of the magic x to split the bx term into two terms, then factor by grouping. This flows more naturally, where as the dividing trick on the X is a bit non-intuitive. For the 3x^2 + 10x - 8 example, the magic x says two rewrite it as 3x^2 + 12x - 2x - 8. Factoring by grouping, we get 3x(x+4) - 2(x+4) = (3x-2)(x+4). This method can actually be used on any factorable quadratic (assuming any GCF has been factored out), so there is no need to teach one method for when a=1 and another method for when a=/=1. Once this method is mastered, you can then talk about the shortcuts of going to straight to factored form when a=1.

Old video but worth editing because the X general solution is incomplete. If you try the solution over the quadratic " 6x²-16x-6" it will give " (x-3)(3x+1) " which is not the right answer. The problem is when the quadratic can already be factorised like you explained in the previous example (in this case, there is a 2 factor that can be already extracted, giving " 2*(3x²-8x-3) " then the quadratic in the parenthesis can be solved by the X method). The way to be sure the solution is correct I got taught is at the end, verify that multiplying the x terms give the original x² term and if not, the missing factor should be added in front of the solution (it'll be the factor we missed to notice could be extracted beforehand). So in the found " (x-3)(3x+1) " seeing that x*3x is 3x² instead of expected 6x² from the problem, we miss a 2* factor that can be added in front to have the right answer.
