This video details the typical build sequence of a Factory Five MK4 Cobra kit car from kit delivery to licensing. The video also details custom modifications & additions I chose to make. Some parts I used for my build
Ford Explorer 5.0 H.O.
Tremec T5
GT40P cylinder heads
Ford 8.8" solid rear end axle
I hope this video shows the average DIY'er they can take on a project like this and succeed! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think and thanks for watching!

@@TacoJoe You need to install a valet key, or some kind of rev limiter before you let a young person drive it alone, if I had that car when I was 16, I don't think I would have made it to 17. Great idea / agree with everything you said / it’s crazy how fast the rear end will come loose on this thing! Very good. I installed my engine/trans alone in my FFR Daytona Coupe. Have done this many times, however in these chassis, no room for error, another set of hands would have been nice. Only thing I don’t like here is the HEI dizzy. Mine took me 5 years from delivery to license.
@TacoJoe
@TacoJoe 5 лет назад
If i could go back in time, i likely would have taken a different path on ignition. I wanted to keep it simple (eg- no coil) - but the HEI turned into a nightmare on its own. I had to buy an offset air cleaner for clearance then the base hit the carb! Had to then machine an offset spacer to raise up the air cleaner then it hit the hood! Also - the Chinese knockoffs have NO slop with the bottom bushing and its a forced seat on the block platform -bad bad bad- had to machine to distributor housing to fix it -but- even the MSD higher end offerings either hover over the platform (bad) or have the same clearance issue. Duraspark would have saved me a lot of trouble -but- its Duraspark :)
@ProjectFairmont
@ProjectFairmont 5 лет назад
TacoJoe yea Duraspark...the best I can say about that it is wired correctly for a proper ignition box and coil. I used an MSD dizzy that works with my air cleaner and run a Mallory 6A ignition and coil hidden within the dashboard. I built my engine back in 2007 and ran it in a Fairmont until I installed it in the FFR Coupe. I thought that was going to be the least of my concerns in terms of the build. It took me a full summer to diagnose what turned out to be a bad ignition pick up on said dizzy...Jesus. HEI does work, just looks odd on a Ford.

Thought there should be a 0.25-0.28mm valve clearance, but you chek by pouring spirits and it looks like there's no gap. Or was it just before setting the clearances?

Added the spirts to make sure they valves were seated (no leaks into the intake/exhaust ports). If they leaked it would show lapping was not effective - or - that i needed a valve job to recut the seats. The GT40 heads are so common though, not sure a valve job is even worth it -LOL / thanks for the comment!

@@TacoJoe thanks for the reply! I wish gt40 heads were as common in my country, building a Cobra over here is a challenge of the century 😁

Good luck Alexander - hope it all comes together for you!

Did they at least give you plans for all of the parts you had to fabricate yourself? Seems like that would be the least they could do. Guess no kit car comes 100% complete, but it sure makes it a hard project for the average car guy to get into something like this.

You can build a FFR without any custom parts / I just chose this route because I wanted to go the extra mile / make things perfect. If you buy the complete kit, you only need an engine / transmission and rear end / the kit will have everything else you need

We got ours in November of 2011! I love that you have a daughter, too - my dad and I built it together. But our engine took four adults over an hour to install - and it caught on fire the first time we started it (I'll share the link because it's so...something). Ours is blue with black stripes! I think I'll make a video like this for my dad's birthday. Have you had any issues with the battery not maintaining a charge?

OK i know at the time it was probably scary but that is a great video / i've been there too (my new Corvette engine had a timing issue and was shooting flames out the carb!) - thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for the nice comment Emma- my daughters spent a lot of time with me in the garage during our build and we made a lot of memories along the way (probably like you did with your dad). Great color combination too! My battery keeps charge OK but i disconnect it with a switch when i'm not driving it. Those electrical drain problems can be a challenge to diagnose, but i'm sure you/your dad can figure it out. Good luck!

That C3 has some awesome potential. I’m not a LS guy, it’s just so over used it’s ruined it. There are companies like WORLD that make awesome smallblock and LT Stuff that is “exotic” enough to add a level of special to that type of project. Especially a touring version of that C3.

I like the though of a touring C3 / torque motor with suspension that handles. I'm leaning more and more towards a C3 project / thanks for the comment-

Awesome video, so you bought the kit with only the body.

I bought the basic kit so its the body/frame/some of the suspension/basic lights-seats-interior/etc. The rest i bought over time as i built the car. Check out my FFR Cobra: What's it cost? video and you can see where all the spend went-
