On "My Car Story" we're at The Arizona Concours d”Elegance in Scottsdale AZ on 1-19-24.
We're looking at a 1956 Buick Century Convertible in two tone Blue Paint. The car comes with the 322 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steve Plunkett. Steve’s had this car since 2019. Steve shares he loves a car with a story and this Buick has a story. The Buick X was customized for Bill Mitchell, the Design Head of GM at the time. The car has over 200+ modifications and power head rests which I don’t think I’ve seen on any other car.
If you’re interested in learning about The Arizona Concours d’Elegance, go to the website at arizonaconcour...
ENJOY!

Where does one begin with a car like this. The colors on the car - the two tone exterior and the red wheel wells being replicated on the inside with the red accent on aqua base vinyls. This was from an era of design that simply cannot be replicated now. You were so right to point out the details (or as I call the hidden jewels of design). That engine was not only great sounding but looking at its layout you could see real engineering talent and machining and casting of metal parts. Today we get plastic everything. Arrrrrrrgh. You've outdone yourself with this one, Lou. One thing will always be constant with you - you will outdo yourself with another; the greatness of your channel!

I'm trying to come up with the proper words to describe this Century, but I'm speechless. 'Stunning' doesn't even scratch the surface. It's so far above any other prototype of the era because it looks like something the factory could have (SHOULD HAVE!) offered instead of being the typical over-the-top styling exercise. Just like the Gaylord you featured awhile back, this car has me drooling. Wow, you've outdone yourself with this one Lou.

I had the wonderful opportunity for my '56 Olds Starfire (which Lou did a segment on about 5-6 years ago) to be parked next to Steve's '56 Buick at the 2024 Arizona Concours d'Elegance car show. This unique Buick has to be seen to be believed. When I met Steve in the event parking garage the night before the show and he showed me all the one-off elements of this car, I told my wife that everyone else in our class was competing for second place because I was 100% certain the Buick would win the class (which it did). My favorite parts are the unique intake manifold with 4 side draft carbs, and the rocker panel exhaust, but it is all spectacular. On top of that, Steve was a real gentleman who loves to talk cars. I was happy for my Starfire to win a class award at the show and I didn't feel bad at all about losing to such an incredible Buick. Lou, it was great seeing you at the show and thanks for sharing this unicorn of a car with everyone!

I believe I was introduced to that car in it's un-restored condition in Wyoming Michigan back in the 70's in an old rundown 1 stall garage. One off Buick Convertible, all the things I love to hear together except one, mine. I was lucky enough to work on a 1of 1 1964 Impala SS convertible, it was built for a GM VP's son. A lot of the one off electrical opts weren't working, I had to figure it out. The last thing was 1 off power vent windows and the 6 button switch. Cadillac motors in the windows and I had to repair the switch. Your videos just keep getting better and better, thanks Lou.💚✌️

Amazing vehicle. This 1956 edition was meant to be exceptional in ways that exemplify the exuberance and swagger of Post WWII America. This specific custom order is of museum quality because of its impeccable condition and additionally because of the sophistication found in the classic convertible body lines, the two tone color distribution… a true testament of luxury, taste and technology which typified US confidence in its future. Powerhouse 1950s prestige and many a teenager’s dream ride. “Dad, can I borrow the Buick tonight ?” “Yeah, I suppose son … but stay outa trouble.” Congrats on this recent purchase. I was damn near born in a 53 Buick Roadmaster😂! But there was a hospital less than a mile away 😅. Dad was a champion of work for what you want. Mom let him know how it was gonna be. Dad fell in line, and that straight 8 Buick must have set a speed record in the standing mile😇! My big sister told me 😊.

Hi Lou, I hope all is well with you and your family . I've been very busy working on classic cars lately; so I haven't had the opportunity to communicate with you. I've known Steve Plunkett for a number of years now, and may I add that he is a true gentleman. Try to make an effort to view his car collection at his home. I respect his privacy so therefore I will not reveal his location. Take care and remember when you're healthy you're wealthy. Brian the limo driver

Beautiful car! The speedometer is not actually a "ribbon" speedometer. It is a long drum. The red is painted on the drum in a spiral. The faster you go the more red there is exposed.

What an absolutely amazing car! I think Buick made a huge mistake in not putting this car into production exactly "as is" and marketing it as a very limited production "above top of the line" ultra premium priced car. Besides actually selling a fair number of them, it would've sparked Buick sales across the entire Buick model line by generating a huge amount of showroom traffic! I wonder if Cadillac had anything to do do with this not happening as Cadillac didn't have anything to compete with this and the top brass at GM was afraid the hugely profitable Cadillac Division would lose showroom traffic and thus sales to this and other lesser Buick models?
