Queens that would make for a good future Weird History episode: -Jadwiga of Poland -Maria Theresa of Austria (aka Marie Antoinette's mom) -Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba -Wu Zeitan -Empress Sissi of Austria And while we're on the subject of Russia, an episode about everything that had to happen for the Russian Revolution to take place would be cool too.
Idk what he's talked about yet but I would love to hear the story of Anastasia and her family because theres a lot to talk about like her family's life and why people thought Anastasia survived the shooting
she wasnt, the only reason she did that is because her son died from it. she didnt care about that, she was using the money to buy paintings and decorate the palace instead of health and food for people. only when it was affecting her on a personal level she cared.
Catherine the Great's numerous affairs go to show just how remarkable Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's marriage was. Neither of them ever cheated, and both often worked best they could to support each other.
Despite what anyone feels about her, she was a brilliant Empress. Even if it meant usurping her imbecile of a husband, she always tried to do what was best for Russia. I think her instict was right to try to pass over her son in favour of her favourite grandson taking over the throne; and in the end, she was right about that too.
You mean Alexander I? He was kind of reckless himself for a while though (his determination in 1805 to quickly crush Napoleon and gain glory instead resulted in Austerlitz, the French emperor's greatest victory, and later the catastrophic Battle of Friedland).
Marcus, why take that tone dude? Go listen for yourself. I’ve only come across the story of her through this podcast. You clearly have a set belief on who she was so I doubt a thoroughly researched podcast is going to change your mind.
A female ruler? How about former Empress Farah of Iran? She helped with a lot of developments (along with the Shah) for Iran. Also promoted women's issues such as family planning and making it possible for Iranian women to earn college degrees and work great careers.
i'd love to hear about Queen Margaret I of Denmark. She herself had an equally interesting story, being the founder of the Kalmar Union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Imagine if Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland had ever been unified under one crown. The Scandavian Empire would have been a remarkable force to reckon with (both Britain and Russia would have had serious issues on their hands).
@Yorkshire Pudding and Pork Pie Charles XII, the young warrior king, was the one who fought the Great Northern War. As a matter of fact, he could have likely conquered Russia early on the war (the Russian army was in shambles), but he instead chose to conquer their then-ally Poland first (big mistake on his part). As a result, the Russians had time to rebuild and reinforce themselves. Truly astonishing to think what might have happened had Sweden won. Young Charles XII was insanely ambitious, and almost realised those goals.
The 2 shows they used for pics of Catherine in this vid are amazing. The Great on Hulu with the younger Catherine is definitely my favorite but the mini series on HBO with the older Catherine was good.
Ron Nessen, President Ford's once press secretary hosted Saturday Night Live back in the 70s in which he did a bit about being the press secretary for Catherine the Great where he regretfully announced that she had died in a riding accident.
She was a smart lady, even at the age of 14 when she was taken to Russia by her mother. She read and educated herself and learned the Russian language. It must have been hard, she never saw her father again and her marriage was to a troubled man, through no fault of his own. And yet she triumphed and was Russia's longest female monarch. Some people are just smart from birth and are a born leader. 😊
@@williamegler8771 Yes but Peter III would still have Romanov blood because his mother was a daughter of Peter the Great. Because of his parentage he was considered both a member of the Houses of Holstein-Gortop and Romanov
@@areiaaphrodite True but as royal titles were passed primarily through male lines he would have been considered a member of a cadet branch of the Romanov family tree. He was a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp of Kiel.
@@yolakin8210 Since Royal bloodlines are traced primarily through the male line especially when it comes to inheriting a throne he was a full member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and only a cadet member of the House of Romanov.
One queen I'd love to hear about is Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi. She was one of the leaders of a rebellion in against the British Raj in India in 1857
I'd love to hear of Caroline Mathilde and Christian VII of Denmark. He was mentally ill and she had an affair with a doctor and had a daughter. She later had her kids taken from her and was exiled and her lover was executed. It's an interesting story, I recommend the movie A Royal Affair with Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen.🙂
She's supposedly my ancestor on my father's mother's side. Cool to know she ruled with an iron fist, just like my grandmother (at least in the house). I guess it runs in the family!
What always bugs me regarding Catherine the Great is the fact that although many men had multiple women and it was silently or openly taken (the wife just had to endure it), when a woman did exactly the same, she was shamed...go to hell double standards
Yep . A strong woman who has worked her way to the top has either slept her way there or is a ball breaker . God forbid she got there on her on brains . When I first went to college in the 1980’s I was told I would have to give 150% to earn any respect while my male counterparts only had to give 60% to earn the same and be paid more . Hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years as it !!!
why is it that almost every woman in power in our history had affairs? it makes it seem as if having affairs is not a male thing, its a opportunity thing or a power thing.
I also thing it lends itself to needing to mary for alliance and political reasons so not always for love or compatibility... a lack of freedom in choice of partner so they compromised?
@@Dragonflyathena youre correct, that goes without saying. but almost everyone in power seems like ends up having affairs. but im referring to "many affairs"
There are some docus on queen mum on youtube. She was a social climber. Very hypocritical about Prince Philip. I don't find her very pleasant. Not sure what Bertie saw in her. QE2 has so much better manners and self discipline than her mum did!
Uhh that despite her being German she was allowed to continue ruling Russia without too much hassle it seems, after topping her husband AND that she is presented in a good light re her MUSEUM PURCHASES. If she hadn’t spent a fortune on object d’art but instead spent more time on the Russian people she may have created a country without need for fascism or communism.
Peter (Pyotr) III was the one to start the trend of Romanov Czars getting forced to abdicate and/or killed. He was followed by Paul (Pavel), then Alexander II, and finally Nicholas (Nikolai) II
Once again your video is amazing 👍! Catherine the great was really a badass queen. Can you please do videos of alexandra Fedrovna and alxendra of denmark?
I want to know about Nzinga , Amanirenas or Hatshetput! I will also like to know about Mercadera, Black Agnes, Gudit , Nitocris and Takeko Nakano ,please.
Hulus series about Catherine the Great is absolutely incredible, funny, stunning. Elle Fanning and Nicholas Holt give 100% of themselves and make it impossible to turn off!! Season 2 is to far away!!! Watch it, you won't regret it!
Сериал с Эль Фанинг отвратительный. Его в России восприняли как плевок в лицо, может для американцев он и смешной, но для нас ужас. У нас есть свой сериал "Екатерина Великая", даже близко с американской версией не стоит
Catherine was very idealistic, and her reign got off to a brilliant (if controversial) start. However, as time went on, her expansionist foreign policy actually was a drain on the country in a number of ways. There was a time when she even risked losing territory, even her capital. Catherine was at times _lucky_ that her armies always prevailed, so Catherine has mostly escaped criticism for her bad decisions as empress, though I would say there probably weren't very many of them.
One of the great tragedies of Catherine's reign was that she could not do much for the serfs. Absolute power isn't really absolute, and you only have it until you don't. Catherine needed the support of the nobility to maintain herself on a throne to which she had no right. The nobility wanted serfdom to continue, so Catherine wasn't going to do anything to weaken her position by pissing off the nobility. I think there are a couple of things she could have done to improve the lot of the serfs, however. One, she could have given surfs owned by the crown more freedom, perhaps substantial freedom so long as they stayed in place wherever they were assigned and paid a portion of whatever they earned to the crown. Catherine could have also leaned on the clergy to follow her example. All of that _might_ have started a larger trend among surf owners in Russia. The second thing Catherine could have done to improve the lot of the serfs was simply fighting fewer wars. Catherine's frequent wars were mostly successful, but they were a huge drain on the country financially and otherwise. The prosperity borne of peace would have trickled down to the serfs.
......her husband was hated for trying to give poor people a better life?.......the history of the world right there.........and does that mean the song secret lovers is about Cathrine the great?
