PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING AN E LOCKER. This video clearly shows the locker unlocking temporarily while Changing direction. This is fine when there's no load but when theres a large amount of load like recovering from being bogged that 6 inches of going from locked to unlocked then back to locked is very similar to engaging the locker while 1 wheel is spinning faster than the other. This exact situation has caused my locker to fail. The car is fully drivable but the locker does not lock in anymore whatsoever. There is proof as each ramp has stress cracks proving the damage was caused while reversing and going forwards which is exactly the situation that occurs when recovering a bogged car from sand. So far Harrop have denied my claim and I am currently fighting this as I never ever engaged the locker unless I was stationary or rolling slowly in a straight line with no throttle.

My experience with Harrop E-locker is as follows. My Harrop E-locker self locked on a freeway @~90km/h (I have the fuse removed when not off-road) and not only destroyed the crown wheel and pinion but also ripped out some of the front diff mounting on my ford Ranger. It was a horrific self destruction of a diff center that only ever had one off road engagement (just to try it 4 days prior) and under 1,500km/a week since installation. Harrop will not honor their basic manufacturers warranty (item 2.1) where it states that they will favour the consumer in a warranty claim, instead all they have been doing is looking for an out before they will honor their primary statement in their own warranty . Harrop customer care and warranty has to be the worst i have experienced as a consumer..They will blame anything with "Failure is difficult to pinpoint" "backlash could have been a contributing factor"- that's what virtually makes up their "engineering analysis"..Here i am left with no vehicle for 2 months and have no option but to go to ACCC. It took Harrop more than a month to get back to me and refuse the warranty claim and they still haven't returned my diff so i can have a mechanical engineer write a report, Even though the reputable and qualified Diff specialist that they are now throwing under the Bus has requested the box of shrapnel be sent back . (they are probably arguing about a $40 freight cost) after 2 months and i have had to purchase a new front diff assembly just to get the car back on the road. (I will be putting on an air locker as i will not do business or placing my safety or the safety of my family with Harrop again) I will be sure to update the community on how this ends up. As a 4x4 and touring enthusiast to others i can only suggest that you do your research and choose wisely.

@@HarropTV I am interested, with the question asked about the bog hole i could be in a situation where i am trying to climb a steep muddy track, if i dont get it first go i may have to back up and have another go at it, my concern is I could be in a situation where i have to give my troopy beans straight off the bat to get moving up the steep hill. Will this 6 inch of play at full beans cause this locker to potentially fail? Or are they tested for these situations? This is a serious question from someone looking to buy 2 of them. Kind regards.
@askbeevs
@askbeevs 6 лет назад
What’s the misconception on social media? It takes 6 inches (depending on tire size) to re-activate the locker when shifting directions... Then 6 inches to re-engage going forwards again. If you’re just driving through a bog hole it wont make a difference as you point out, but if you are ramped on a steep rockey steep hill and trying to launch over an obstacle its a royal pain, and its very noticeable. Dont think there are any ‘misconceptions’. Just well informed 4WDers that have used the products and know their limitations.

i think on social media someone was mention half wheel turn.. not 6inches.. 6inches is almost nothing compare to half wheel turn. given half wheel turn can be almost 50inches for 33inch tyres.

hm it is enough to stuff up a drive in certain circumstances as you can see here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1nYZo--7Xh4.html , the 6 inch is for what Tyre size? We see far more then 15cm rotation needed to disengage and re-engage on 35" in most situations we encountered where this is an issue the front wheels up a decent rock step and a few forward and backward movements to re-align are required. The bind does not keep lockers engaged in my experience the traction is not there second it is required.
@lror
@lror 6 лет назад
AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV is correct. Its a lot more than 6 inches and closer to half a turn if not more. The other issue i have seen on trucks that play hard is the load plate next to the magnet gets indented by the locking pins to a point where they no longer slide and can no longer disengage or re-engage depending on where the damage has occured.
@Silentway247
@Silentway247 6 лет назад
From what I gather that half a tire turn is coming from the OLD Eaton ball bearing design, not the latest pin design. You can see from forward to reverse the diff barely moves, the old ball bearings would turn the diff quite a bit.

And at least the ARB works how a locker is supposed to work once you set it up correctly. The Eaton is great until you get stuck and need to reverse and then you have no locker. That kind of defeats the purpose of having a locker right? Seeing how it doesn't work when you need it to work the most. So this REALLY begs the question, why doesn't the electromagnet just engage/disengage the locking plate, or the pins directly? Is a mechanical, space or patent infringement issue? It sure seems a more practical action that wouldn't have the fw/rr disengagement issue.

Why does it unlock when changing directions?! I wasn't even looking for this diff but that seems like a huge problem. If your trying to shoot up a rock step and you put it in reverse to get a 6-12 inch run up to bump up over and then both front and rear are unlocked. Then they lock mid bounce when the tires have 20 times the traction it's just asking to break the weakest link, be it your CVs, U joints, and or axle shafts. Looking at this from and engineering standpoint it's ludacris, the amount of shock load created is immense almost like dumping the clutch.

Great demonstration. Someone needs to make a rear E- Locker for the Ram HD (Cummins or whatever AAM 11.5). Harrop/Eaton, AAM, Yukon, TJM, or someone needs to step up and make this. It's so overdue. Yes ARB is available but it's not practical. Not to mention the seals that wear out and need to be replaced whether you're using them or not. ARB is good and strong but a flawed design in the actuator, and too much to fiddle with and go wrong. I hope the industry sees what a potential gold mine this is and moves on it soon. I should mention that the Power Wagon rear E-locker is available through Mopar (Only one available for AAM 11.5) and comes in well over $3,000 U.S. for just the carrier assembly. Screw you too Mopar...

Is this the same as the most recent eaton design (elocker4)? I was looking on the eaton website and the video they show has the magnet and the locker plate on the same side of the of the diff, and it looks like the magnet pushes the locking plate directly into the side of one spider gear, such that i would assume it would not need to diff to rotate to engage. They claim a 0.14s engagement time, and to have an actual time i would assume the motion of the vehicle would not be a factor
