Louis XIV (5 September 1638 - 1 September 1715)
He was a french king from the House of Bourbon who reigned the french kingdom during the second half of the 17th century. He was one of the most powerful French monarchs as he created a centralized state governed from the capital and consolidated France as an absolute monarchy that endured until the French revolution, almost 100 years after his death.

Joella Z I believe the kings Charles and Louis were cousins and good friends in fact I think Louis asked Charles to let James be his heir so that Catholicism would be back on the English throne. Just my theory
@joellaz9836
@joellaz9836 4 года назад
Fred Barker Yes. They were cousins. And Charles did have some kind of secret dealing with Louis that was about Catholicism. If the deal was known during Charles reign it would have absolutely ruined Charles. People in England back then were constantly afraid of secret catholic plots. They believed Catholics were always plotting something. For instance, many believed the great fire of London was a catholic plot and it was started by the command of the pope. This would have made the English in the late 1600s absolutely paranoid, but I don’t think it was revealed until 100 years after his death that he had secret dealings with Louis about Catholicism. I prefer Oliver Cromwell to Charles II. Charles II was a debauched man. In fact, the reason why Oliver Cromwell was reluctant to offer Charles II the throne again was because his debauchery was already very well known by the 1650s.

Joella Z I just can’t like Cromwell at all for what he did in Ireland burning churches with women and children inside. Makes him seem like scum even despite other achievements.
@joellaz9836
@joellaz9836 4 года назад
Fred Barker WTH. He never burned women and children in churches. The worst thing he is known to have done was put to death 2,000 ARMED men after the siege on Drogheda in Ireland, which was pretty much what people did after a siege back in the day. He was known to always spare everyone who wasn’t ARMED though. I’ve read biographies about him (specifically one written by Antonia Fraser) and I was surprised with how compassionate, faithful and humble he was. I remember reading how when someone would show Oliver Cromwell pamphlets which derided him during his reign, he would literally just laugh it off. I mean Hitler and Stalin would instantly have anyone who dared deride them imprisoned and shot in the 20th century. Cromwell was more tolerant and less tyrannical than you think.

Louis XV did. Terrible king; the 7 years war disaster and his contempt for his own responsabilities as king left the country in a terrible state and Louis XVI was way too indecisive to save the situation. The French Revoltution was a Paris thing, engineered by the bourgeoisie. Economic problems pissed off the pleb and that was done. Lots of propaganda surrounds the French Revoltion. I still personnaly think it was a disaster for France. Should have smoothly moved towards a constitutional monarchy if Louis XVI had not listened to his nefarious entourage and stupid wife.

The territory of Louisiana was so large that it included that 15 states contain land from the Louisiana Purchase... and 2 provinces in Canada. It's approximately 1/3 of the current continental USA. If you really want a lesser known fact, James Madison (future 5th U.S. President) negotiated the purchase at 2 cents an acre.

The man in the iron mask story is VERY debatible and most likely, highly untrue because of very little reliable documentation and contradictory facts. Also, Louis XIV legitimized all his children from all his mistresses except for a rumored black child (named Louise) he had with a black girl, but he did financial take care of her as she was raised by nuns and became one herself. Another correction is that Madame de Montespan was not taking a shower, but a bath while spied on by the peeping-tom King (Louis XIV was known to play tricks on her and dress up as a guard and surprise her as well). Showers were not conceived at that point in time. Matter of fact, the King built for her a one of a kind, gorgeous 1 piece reddish tone marble tub that is still within the Orangerie at Versailles. It's utterly gorgeous. You could of mentioned more facts (instead of potential false ones like the iron mask) like for example; "l'affaire du poison" that did in fact occur and how it affected the King and the whole court at Versailles. Or what was the King's goal of building such a huge palace in Versailles of all places and the reason to have all the nobles there. Or perhaps why he wishes to have a book of 'étiquette' drawn up and followed by every member of the court and what was his purpose in doing so. It should be mentioned that King Louis XIV outlived all his children (and brother, who btw he was very close to despite some sibling rivalry) and remarried (secrectly) to Madame de Maintenon (his children's nanny). Overall a good video, but please elaborate and stick to real facts.

There is some documentary evidence for the Man in the Iron Mask. There is an arrest warrant where the name of the prisoner was known only to the king and the Commander who arrested. In fact also, the mask was velvet and only worn when moving between prisons. He also wore if there were strangers around the prison. Standing orders were that should he start to talk to anyone he was to be shot immediately. He was allowed a valet, another prisoner. I have been doing quite a lot of research about him, as I write history books. There was even a rumour, groundless of course, that the prisoner was one of my ancestors, James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch. The evidence seems to indicate that the prisoner was actually a senior military figure who had failed terribly in his duty.

There is a theory, with some evidence, to show that Louis XIV was not the son of Louis XIII, but of a Prince of the House of Valois, who stepped in to the breach, as it were, because the old king was well known to have romantic attachments with men and couldn't do the job with the Queen.

Dear Nefertari, nationality as we think of it nowadays is not accurate regarding this times. Because all kings and queens came from different dynasties which ruled over countries they did not all come from at first (remember that the present English family was named "Sax Coburg und Gotha" due to Victoria I's husband, Albert, and that Victoria was also of German descent, and that George V chose to change their name into "Windsor" when WWI started). Back to the XVIIth century, the Spanish kings were from an Austrian family : the Habsburgs (doesn't sound very Spanish, don't you think ? 🙂). A very large part of Louis XIV's ancestors were from that Austrian family which reigns both in Spain and in Austria. An other part was Italian. And of course, French. Hence, Louis XIV was fluent in Spanish and Italian.

He was not called Apollo because of his parents. There is a Occult theme in France that connects it to ancient Greece. Other people were called after Greek Gods like Diana of Poitiers and Henri IV being called the Gallic Hercules. There is also a theme of the sea with France like Isle De France is Paris, the crowned prince is called the Dolphin, the color blue is often used. I think because it connects to the coastlands Greece or the Salic (I forget how to spell it) Franks were by the sea and Mervochs mother was raped by a sea bull.
@heliedecastanet1882
@heliedecastanet1882 Год назад
Dear Three, the heir to the French throne is not called "the Dolphin", but "the Dauphin", even in English. Simply because this title never referred to this animal, but to an an ancient province : le Dauphiné, close to the Alps, that Jean II of France purchased in 1349. The blue colour refers to the colour associated with the Virgo (her coat was supposed to be blue, as you can see in a lot of paintings).

Marly was demolished in the early XIX century after being turned into a factory. It was looted and all decorations were either destroyed or sold. The park was dismantled. The royal pavilion and the 12 guests pavilions were demolished around 1806

Actually, it was not even his grandson who became king (mistake in the video) but his great-grandson. Louis XIV's son and grandson died before him, as well as a large part of his family. Very sad story. Only one of his great-grandchildren was left alive : the duc d'Anjou, who became Louis XV, aged 5 when Louis XIV died.

One of the worst Kings France ever had: bankrupted the country by endless battles over 2 square miles of European land but wouldn't give the slightest help to a French adventurer who could have replaced the Portuguese in Brazil - French would be spoken by 200 million more people than it is today; drove the Huguenots - the most commercially active community in the country - from France to become successful everywhere the went: drove them out because they were Protestant and he was a devout Roman Catholic, who was a notorious womanizer - mortal sins one after the other - making him one of the most devoted and energetic hypocrites in history. "After me, the deluge" was absolutely correct but not for the reason he said it. t

@MajorDenisBloodnok
@MajorDenisBloodnok 5 лет назад
Yes, you are right, he had a brother: Philippe, duc d'Orléans, also called Monsieur. It is from Monsieur that Louis-Philippe became king of the French in 1830 after the abdication of Charles X, the last king of France and "direct" Bourbon king. The actual pretenders to the throne of France (!!!!) come from this Orléans branch of the Bourbons since the last direct Bourbon pretender, the Comte de Chambord (Charles X 's grandson) died in 1883 without child.
@heliedecastanet1882
@heliedecastanet1882 Год назад
@@MajorDenisBloodnok Hello, dear Major ! There are actually two pretenders, because the elder branch of the Bourbon family still exists : in Spain. We call this two parties "the Orléanistes" and "the Légitimistes". The first supports the comte de Paris (cadet branch, direct descendant of Monsieur). The second supports Louis Alphonse d'Anjou et de Cadix (elder branch, direct descendant of Louis XIV). Louis Alphonse is head of the House of Bourbon. He is a stubborn extremist catholic, acquainted with the worst far right movement.

@@heliedecastanet1882 I know that but it is the never ending debate between the treaty of Utrecht and the fondamental laws of the kingdom. But a Spanish Bourbon or a Orleans, I don't care since I am a republican but it is very amusing to watch the "battle" between the supporters of an Hispanic playboy, great grandson of Franco, franquist himself, who barely speaks French and the supporters of a square minded church mouse who has never worked in his entire life, who now lives with the help of his friends...

Louis XIV left Paris because the then capital of France was remembering him the breach of allegiance from the nobility. He made Versailles the new political capital city and created there his new environment precisely to have the same nobility submitted. The castle wasn’t finished when he died in 1715.
