You young fellas need to go watch more Larry Bird videos. Larry was the one to innovate, perfect, and popularize the fadeaway and step back.

In some cases the stepback look like a traveling violation: they have the ball in the hands and they still make more then one step or move/jump both legs. See 6:28 (2 double steps)
