this fafsa sucks! I moved out at 19 and pay for everything myself and have had to pay out of pocket because I'm not 24???? How is that not independent? They really need to change that. If you can purchase alcohol, get a credit card etc you should be able to get aid without your parents info.

Would I be considered independent if I were to join National Guard? I am currently a sophomore in college and my parents don't help me with any of my expenses and their tax information causes me not to get any help from anywhere else

I did had a question right now I’m trying to do my fafsa form I believe it’ll be my 5th year and I’m trying to apply for 2024-2025 but for some reason keeps telling me I’m an independent status but I’m still dependent of my parents I still live with them and my dad has me on he’s taxes as dependent of him so I’m not understanding why fafsa keeps telling me I’m an independent status.

What if I’m 23 right now, but I am turning 24 before this fall semester starts? Can I file as an independent student?

I am struggling with fafsa right now, my dad passed away and my mom is an immigrant. But we both financially take care of my brother (I pay for groceries/necessities for him like school supplies and entertainment (his video games.) and I pay for rent. My mom and I both work but I claim him on my taxes. I don’t know how to fully provide proof that I provide more than the 50% of support for him because my mom and I go half and half so he doesn’t pay rent/any bills. Is there anything you recommend

I don't think your number 4 is correct. You do not have to be Over the age of 24 to be considered independent, as you have stated. According to the FAFSA, The student is 24 year of age or older by December 31 of the award year. It may not mean much to you but for the thousands of 24 year olds applying, this distinction is meaningful.
