Thanks for sharing when things go wrong, it's nice to know I'm not alone! I was wondering if you would share what you normally do as research? I don't take landscape photos often so generally just have an idea of where the sun will come up and when but is there more I could do before turning up?
I stalk locations and get a feel for it photographically, I use the free version of the photographer's ephemeris (free on desk top although you do have to log in). I belong to photo hound (you do have to pay but I use it such a lot that it works out worth it) they give specific location advice using what3words (which I use a lot as its free and you can get directions to a specific 3m squared location with the 3 word description. And google earth.... photopills I have but am not hugely proficient at it at the moment (as we found out in this video!). I hope that helps... photographers ephemeris is really helpful as i can see on any date where the sun will rise/set and times etc...
I really ought to think about using photopills, I bought it for Astro, not really remembered it for those little photo outings! Great fun your sharing the 'oops moments' as well as the successes.
The 7P's. Proper planning and preparation prevents p1ss poor performance! 😁 The algorithm sent me here. Subscribed. Nice to see a youtube photographer showing us a bad day(s). It was also nice to watch a video without hearing the like/subscribe/squarespace hit the bell icon rubbish you have to listen to. And it was a nicely edited video.
Steve, just thank you for allowing me to share them. They are beautiful and saved my video big time... thank you for all the advice re the location, I'm sorry I managed to mess it up but, as you say, next time!
Adapt... Improvise...and overcome. It may not have been what you expected or wanted, but it still turned out good. You made another great video for us to enjoy. Thank you!
Thank you :-) After becoming a right moany old moo at that first location I realised that I just needed to cut to some photos that actually did the place justice. I also think it was because the morning before I had had splendid and unexpected fun in Blackpool shooting infrared. The contrast was considerable! Have a good week sir!
@@hepontour thank you but they aren’t mine. Have a look at Steve Stain and Dorsetandsunrises… they rescued this by allowing me to share. But I will pass on your wow. Thank you for the feedback 👍
WOW, I said Sqiushed together about 1.5 seconds before you did, and I shouted YES...! lol... Sad I know... lol Very nice video, I've shared it with my sister :)
Great minds Richie - it's a very technical photographic phrase ;-) And I do that with videos too... sometimes have whole conversations with presenters and even shout at them at times. It's very cathartic... thank you for sharing with your sister. I want you to know though that this video is not representative of my normal positive approach. lol
Been there done that, the latest maybe two weeks ago trying to capture some milky way shots on a hilltop in Colorado, but I failed to check the location and time of a rising moon. Yep right in front of the M.W. Silver lining.. I wasn't home a mere 3 day drive east.
think many of us if not all of us had trod that same path Louise and they say it's part of the learning journey 🙂, Earlier this year, I travelled from the Cotswolds into Birmingham with the intention to capture some architecture. I done all the usual stuff like checking train times, weather etc but a new one I have now added to my urban preparations is to also check for events as the area of interest for me turned out to be on the main route for Birmingham's Gay Pride parade that day so there was no chance to capture what I had in mind. Every day is a school day as they say 😬
@@scotty4418 that made me chuckle as I have done similar on vacation where I have had 3 day festivities with no transportation or food options. School days are important learning experiences 😉🙈
At 3:39 though, the wind gave me an idea for a longer exposure that would result in waves of green above the staid trees. Or maybe not. There's a folksy expression about how if life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
A book for you: "Why it Doesn't Have to be in Focus." A channel for you: Eva Polak. I just go and photograph what I see. I don't care where the sun is,
@@louisewelcomephotography Start by just looking, don't worry too much about learning. Seeing pictures you like but wouldn't make opens you up to new ideas. Jul for the hell of it, find some cyanotype photograms.
Agreed Nick, I think I had just got myself in 'that' mindset where I wasn't going to get it right as I was just so annoyed at myself on both occasions! In the grand plan it matters not but I became a moany old moo in 90% of the footage at the tree location so I just deleted it as that's not normally me! I promise the next video is more cheerful and even has the odd BOOM in it! ;-) Thanks for the comment.
To be honest, not being a landscape photographer, sad I know living in the Lakes, but I'd have been happy with any of those beech tree shots, the only thing I'd have done is 'warmed' them to the same level as your video.
Jon... thank you for your reply. You made me smile...I've only had the privilege of coming to the Lakes twice (something I plan to rectify) and each time it has been at the height of the season. My 4am starts were necessary to get about! I need to come off peak season and really get to know it. Reflecting on what you said, yes... I was just so tired and disappointed in myself that I couldn't get myself out of my funk! This video took the longest to make of all my videos as I just was a moany old moo for 90% of the footage and that's not normally me. Maybe in a year or so I'll go back to those photos and have a crack at warming. Thanks again.
@@louisewelcomephotography I agree about off peak, unless on business we avoid venturing into the depth as much as possible. For reflections, sheltered lakes like Bassenthwaite, Buttermere and Rydal do well this time early in the morning when the wind behaves, Buttermere perhaps more often than not. Personally I prefer wildlife, it never behaves no matter how much you prepare!
Having just returned from a Scotland trip i certainly empathise, err human error is the curse of us all , deleted probably 2/3rds of my images. But happy with the ones that worked. Great video, thank you..
Although I live in East Sussex, I chuckled when you mentioned where you thought the sunset would be at Arne. I'm lucky enough to know that area well, and knew straight away that wasn't the case (honestly, not gloating!). That whole area is back to front when you think of sunrises, and sunsets. Near by Swanage is a fab place, but don't expect any sunsets over the sea. The sunset will actually be behind you, over land! Just think back to front when in that area and you'll be fine!
Thanks Louise, I truly know the feeling, especially as a rank amateur. If you want to experience a higher level of "plankness," then try astrophotography!
I did Phil, the first one less so but that was because it was a 5 hour drive home after but the second one, hubby and I just sat and watched the deer into the dusk hours. It was rather special inspite of my mess-up. Glad I'm not alone ;-). Thanks for the feedback.
