Professor, thanks for sharing your method on the resizing, very nicely done. Thank you for the detail on the addition of sodium proprionate as an anti-fungal as well--a very important detail for proper conservation and long-term preservation of these treasures! In terms of your color loss, unfortunate. I agree the water bath was extended too long. Do you think the addition of the Triton X 100 made the inks less tolerant of an extended water bath or the calcium hydroxide? I am interested in your thoughts on what contributed to the ink loss.

The color loss is unfortunate Peter. I’ve been drifting away from soaking in calcium hydroxide as a step in every project. I believe the spray method I used in the X-Men helps prevent the risk of color loss.

Hi Jerry, yes, I agree with you 100%. I let the tidelines get to me and I wanted them gone so lesson learned not to overdo it with the CaOH2 baths. Thank you Jerry for your support, I really appreciate you and couldn’t do any of this without your help and your excellent Conservation channel!

Thanks for sharing this info - I was researching this and appreciate seeing your process. Have you had any issues when sent for grading? This is reversible, correct?

My pleasure, Don. Yes, the gelatin is reversible in a warm water bath. It’ll melt off the surface side and the book becomes unsized again. The method I use now uses a wider and softer brush. I need to show this one day, it’s really superb and it is conservation. I don’t have anything sent to CGC yet but soon. Will let you know.
