I just had the same thing with my A3 s-line replaced everything on the rear in the summer & just failed on both front springs in December, just wanted to say you don’t need to remove the bottom ball joint, just remove the 3 nuts & hinge the arm down 🤙
Well done. You can’t beat the satisfaction of doing this kind of work yourself. This is a pig of a job for sure, especially working on the ground. I’d advise anyone doing this, to do both sides even if only one spring is broken. Also, if the shock itself is old and a bit suspect, now is definitely the time to change them. Also, while you have everything out it would be wise to change the top mount bearing. I realise all this significantly adds to the budget but chances are they will need replacing.
Compress the springs once wheels off, top anti link nut off (take it out) slacken drive shaft bold, take off bottom ball joint on the arm, take off tie rod end, take off the 3 bolts at the top, it'll fall out, no need to take off pinch bolt and disassemble the leg, 15 minute job for me, did it yesterday on both sides :)
Hello pal. Great video, I've just 1 question as my car failed in December due to a broken passenger spring. I decided to replace the pair as I was told it will compress different to a worn one?
Hi pal. I have never heard that before pal. I gave the car a day of driving to settle and then measured from the centre cap to the wheel arch on both sides and the measurements are exactly the same pal. 🤔
I guess there is nothing wrong with that logic pal but if that was the case they would only sell those items in pairs rather than being able to buy them singular if that makes sense pal 🤔
@@projectfearn yeah absolutely, when you say it like that it makes sence. I just think that in general, as 1 has already broken, while it's up in the air it may be worth doing the pair, because the chances are the other side is not far behind.
Gutted you didn't show the spring compressors. It always feels a bit sketchy when i use them and I do like to see if I can get tips from others in using the compressors. Nice job and it gives a sense of satisfaction doing it yourself (I would have replaced the pair though! 🙂)
I did a video on my RS1800 pal where I show myself using them :) like I said pal I let the car settle after a day of driving and measured the ride height and it was spot on both sides 👌
When I fitted coilovers to my s3, the only thing I undone was the drop link and the spline bolt in the hub that clamps the shock, then use 1/4 drive to split the hub and jumped up and down on the calipers with a jack underneath the lower arm there's loads of movement to get the shock out without taking everything off... Its the shocks that corrode to the aluminium hubs that make it a twat
With the "Strut Spreader"tool ,you are doing easy the job?(to expand the knee). In my experience ,when i do this job.i understand this tool it is not so effective on aluminium knee. (because the tool is steel, and the knee on s3 is from aluminium(soft)after many times the aluminium "are eated" and don't open well the knee )
Speed humps on Asda car park.....spring killers..... my mazda 3 has had ..2 rear springs.... and three dampers... luckily warranty... 110k not had a broken front for years.....last one was on me renault.. the colored dots on the spring are the rating for it...make sure they match the old one.... changing one is fine... :) unless your like jenson button ...you aint gonna notice.. :) N x
Yeah the coloured dots matched mate. I know pal i get why people would want to change both but I'm not having it that Audi or any other manufacturer would require you to change them in pairs yet sell them singular and not in pairs. Right height is exactly the same both sides. I could understand if I was putting one after market spring on. 😎
I let the car settle for a day and measured both sides and they were exactly the same. Also giving the car a bounce didn't seem to give and major difference between the sides. 😎
@@projectfearn, it’s not just for that reason mate, yes one spring will be stronger than the old one in a couple of ways, your offside will be weaker and doing the corner push won’t show it but there will be a difference and secondly the near side has broke, it won’t be long until the offside spring will break,
I totally get what you are saying pal and it's something that has never crossed my mind. I generally thought a spring is good until it breaks. Obviously struts are a different thing altogether etc. Will nip in Audi on my way past and see what they advise too. Don't mind sticking a spring on the other side too as this wasn't done to save money 👍
