This Video shows how a real life failure of a product (laptop desk) can be
modeled using FEA and identify the critical locations.
The Analysis was carried out completely in Freecad FEM workbench.
Freecad was used to model the geometry. The model was simplified,
capturing only the necessary features to identify the critical
locations, which can eventually fail. The dimensions does not represent
the actual desk.
Free cad allows meshing through GMSH or Netgen. For this analysis
Netgen was used. Tetrahedral meshing was done with medium resolution.
The material selected was ABS plastic. Material properties was chosen
from FreeCad material library.
A dummy load of 70N was applied (in reality the load was not instantaneous
so it can be approximated as Static Load) and initially the face at the end
of the legs were fixed as Boundary conditions and analyzed. The results were not as correct. As an improvement in BC the inner edges of the legs were fixed and analyzed. The results were correct and reflected the reality in identifying the critical Locations.
It was observed that the horizontal movement of the leg is higher which causes high moment load to the leg and pad interface. Hence a horizontal member was added to limit the movement.
However the analysis has provided a deep insight to explore other design options of the desk to improve its strength for resisting any accidental overload.
Hope the Video was helpful.
Thank for watching.
