Update: Sadly, this aircraft has crashed performing Carson Air Flight 66 between the Vancouver International Airport YVR and the Prince George Airport YXS on April 13, 2015. The two pilots operating the flight were killed. My thoughts go out to their family and friends.
Carson Air Fairchild Swearingen SA226-TC Metroliner II C-GSKC is seen taxiing and taking off from the West Kootenay Regional Airport CYCG in Castlegar, British Columbia, for the Penticton Regional Airport CYYF. Enjoy a nice close-up view of the aircraft taxiing and taking off with some really nice turboprop sounds!
See flight details of this flight here: flightaware.com...

Back in the 1990s I worked for a short time for Ameriflight and they operated the Metro. Those Garrett engines were so loud that they made everybody do the Garrett Salute when a Metro would taxi nearby. You raise both arms away from the sides of your body with your index fingers pointing, then you bend your elbows so your fingers went into your ears.

+somapusher I know what you mean. Last winter I was doing a bit of spotting on a day after a heavy snowfall and there was a Metro at the airport that was leaning back on its tail from the weight.
@goodshipkaraboudjan
@goodshipkaraboudjan 8 лет назад
+somapusher Much easier than something like a 441. Being so long and having the moment arms it does you could hang your weight off the nose with your feet off the ground and know their good. Here in Aus we have them heavy doing night freight on hot nights with fast turn arounds. 99% of a Metro is trim not load, it'll trim superbly with odd balance.
@goodshipkaraboudjan
@goodshipkaraboudjan 8 лет назад
+TheHDAviation I've spent time flying them, the load balance is not hard because it has huge trim allowances. Though that's why you can comfortably exceed MTOW with the right load but if one of those noisy garretts drops asymmetric flight at weight is a death sentence.

Accident report indicates that the captain was seriously intoxicated.
@lbowsk
@lbowsk 6 лет назад
He managed to get it to 8700 feet. He couldn't have been that hammered. The hardest part is driving to the drome and getting from the car to the plane. Exactly why do you bring this up? What do you propose? We all read the review. Two guys are dead. Did it ever occur to you that PERHAPS the SAS clutch went berserk and pitched the nose down which created the overspeed condition that caused the airframe to fail? Probably not. Unfortunately, this plane has more than one incident in which what I suggested occurred. And in at least one (Avair in Raleigh NC) both pilots were killed, along with their pax. While the NTSB hung the accident on the crew, ALPA did extensive work and was able to prove that this plane has one nasty Achilles heel, namely the SAS clutch. Designed to produce a moderate stick push that can easily be overridden by the pilot, when it shorts out it creates a HELL of a lot of nose downforce. More than the crew can handle. Enough to nose the plane over in an instant. In the AVAIR accident, the SAS clutch switch was found in the disconnect position. This position is ONLY used in emergencies when the SAS clutch is engaged when you don't want it engaged. WHy do you suppose the crew disconnected it? It is mounted on the center pedestal within immediate reach of both pilots. Its there for a very good reason. While he was over the limit, its entirely possible that it had ZERO to do with this accident.

+CrazyForCooCooPuffs LOL. Not according to the TSB. "The Transportation Safety Board says evidence suggests a plane that crashed north of Vancouver earlier this week may have broke up in mid-flight. The agency said the twin-engine plane dropped 2,400 metres to about 900 metres in less than 20 seconds and the crew didn't declare an emergency. Based on the way the wreckage was scattered, inspectors believe the plane had broken up before impact with the mountainside." Remember also that the aircraft had a second in command on board who was NOT impaired in any way.

Garret engines proof you can turn jet a into noise alone! Cause they sure made no power

I think they make plenty of power. Push me into my seat enough for every takeoff. I often take it to very short and ice covered gravel strips in northern canada so please do tell how it doesnt create much power?

Paawan, I’d be glad to. I flew Britt airways for years in the early metroliners. I dreaded every summer day! Wieght restricted on a one hour flight with absolutely no single engine performance to speak of. Over temp problems all the time. I’ve never been so glad to leave an airplane in my 20000+ hour career! Two best engines ever made in my opinion are the Pratt jt8d and the pt6. Those engines give their best even when sick, the garret wasn’t much good when new.

I see your point. Thank you for the insite. The bleeds definitely have to go off during the summer on short strips i do agree but what do you mean by weight restricted on a 1hr flight?

Paawan, Most of our flights were out of ORD where runway length was not a problem yet anytime it was over eighty five degrees we would end up leaving seats open because of weight restrictions no doubt due to poor single engine climb performance of the aircraft. The engines had reoccurring over temp problems and gearbox issues it was a poor power plant compared to the pt six. These issues not to mention the main cabin door problems caused me to despise this aircraft. Maybe in a cold climate it might be acceptable but in a hot climate the engine and high wing load wing made this unsuitable.
