They never really are friends(in the upright way).. more like eternal rivals really, when they meet again at first, since Lyon is stil in his villain role- trying to "destroy" their teacher. They start respecting each other over time, but will always keep fighting over something 8)

Lyon wanted to free Deliora, the demon that Ur sacrificed herself to seal, so he could defeat it and "surpass" her and Grey didn't want that, hence why they fought each other

I don't understand. Why does Lyon want to surpass Ur!? Did he love her as a mother? Why does he want to destroy her and what for!? What for sacrificing her own life and leaving him and Gray behind?!?! I'm so sorry... I just don't get it with Lyon.
