"Faith" from The Rules of Attraction (2002)

We shot all of the hotel room scenes at the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey and we had finished our day early. Ian was in make-up, and I was looking at Russell Sams, who plays Dick, wearing his aviator glasses, and I said "you look like George Michael."
Since we had some time, a crew, a camera, etc., I thought what the hell, let's shoot something fun to watch in dailies tomorrow. Our sound man, Felipe Borrero, quickly found a CD of George Michael's Faith -- which he happened to have in his car. I then told Russell, who was always game for anything, "okay, this is your first film, and as an initiation, I want you to do a striptease dance for the crew to Faith."
Russell stared at me for a second, in slight disbelief, and then said, "okay, sure."
It was improv, and we only had time for one take, so I planted the camera with a wide lens at the foot of the bed, played Faith full blast, and let him loose. It was just something funny for the crew to watch, and everyone was laughing their asses off. Mid-way through, I looked over and saw Ian Somerhalder in the hallway in his bathrobe on the way back from make-up and on the way to his trailer, looking into the room incredulously. I made a quick motion for him to "go for it" and the next thing I knew he jumped into the shot -- right on the beat.
It was, honestly, a completely spontaneous, magic moment, and it was such a funny scene that I simply had to include it in the movie. The only problem was that there was no way we could afford the music licensing rights to Faith, so I wrote a letter to George Michael, and sent him the scene, begging him to let me use it. George, being one of the coolest guys in the universe, gave us the song for a dime, and I will forever be grateful because it's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
One day I'll go back into editing and pull out the entire unedited version -- the full dance -- which I originally wanted to include in the movie, but trimmed down for reasons of length.
There's nothing I love more than to see the many RU-vid videos of people dancing on their beds to Faith. It's, to me, an affirmation of the joy of life.
Rest in peace, George. I'll love you forever.
I am the director of The Rules of Attraction (2002) and this clip is fair use under U.S. copyright law because it is (1) non-commercial, (2) transformative in nature, (3) uses no more of the original work than necessary for the video's purpose, and (4) does not compete with the original work and could have no negative affect on it's market.

Me neither -- he has exceptional talent. All I can imagine is that I gave him complete freedom, and that not all directors (or perhaps roles) are so open to that kind of behavioral extremity. In the audition he figured he wouldn't get the part so he told me to "fuck off" and threw his shoe at me and then walked out. Everyone thought he was an asshole, and I insisted that someone chase after him down the street to bring him back. He was perfect, and totally delivered what I wanted. I love him.

Really? Sounds like something from a book. Why would you want someone who could ruin your shoot and fuck up your movie? It is not like it was a complex scene, I am sure most people can do oversexed brat quite easily. I like the film but never much this part, seemed so inorganic to the flow and distracted me from the picture

This is my favorite fact about the movie, I think about it so often just for a smile. Dick’s portrayal is my absolute favorite part of the film and could have so easily been one of my least. It’s amazing how his energy was carried so accurately from the book while also being different in the right ways to translate to film. Fantastic job, love his scenes!

Roger, thank you for the comment and recap of that day and event. I have always been a fan of George Michael and for him to see our work and let us use the scene is a gift. I love that day and will never forget it. I loved working with you, Ian, and that crew. What a moment to have been a part of the experience.

I really loved your performance, definitely a realistic portrayal of some guys. Reminds me in particular of one friend/ex fiance/hard to explain guy. This scene always brings a bittersweet smile to my face for that.

It’s been discussed in film as one of the greatest performances on screen. Surprised about the lack of resurgence and cultural significance not over saturating or being copied in modern film because everything about the film is a masterpiece.

Thank you so much for making the ONLY GOOD BRETT EASTON ELLIS ADAPTATION ever made. You completely understood the books, the characters, his cadence and the milieu. Music choices / OST, editing, casting were spot on and the flash backs when it is revealed the suicide girl has been lurking in the frame all the time are haunting as hell. Fantastic film.

This is my favorite book of all time and when the film came out I was so nervous but it really exceeded all my hopes... it was such a brilliant film and Shannyn Sossamon was my favorite actress at the time and was so happy to see her cast! Its haunting, funny, entertaining, disturbing, thrilling and thought provoking. I was 17 when it came out and it really shaped my formative years following. I can't rave enough all these years later about how much I love this film. I still listen to the soundtrack to this day.

One of my favorite sequences of ALL TIME - the pedantic, casual pill-popping banter between Kurtz & Dunaway is eclipsed by the exquisitely ridiculous bed-dancing only to be topped by a fantastic performance by Sams shoved up against the stuffy & artificial dining room - just genius! I have this video favorited for when I need lift.

I was so high watching this movie, I had trips through whole movie but man did it felt good watchin it in that condition, I was confused and utterly believed scenes and script were all messed up in some way I thought guy in black was Paul's product of imagination at some point...? Btw scene with girl killing herself in the bathroom merging with Nilssons 'Without You' is for sure one of those 'got me chills' scenes you do not forget easy, very strong scene, absolutely loved it :)

I love this scene because Richard is reminding Paul that they're perfect together. They're happy! Goofy, safe and happy together. - but then Richard knows Paul's attentions lie elsewhere. Richard acts out at dinner because his heart is broken. Richard loves Paul. But Paul loves someone else . . . The Rules of Attraction.

this film as a whole is far better in its portrayal of Easton-Elis' narratives, the film based off Less Than Zero was terrible, significantly worse than the book, which i'm a big fan of. i was surprised with how accurate Rules Of Attraction was when it came out.
@Lietiel

Ellis himself agrees. All of the other adaptations changed the tone, in order to make them more P.C. The Rules of Attraction was the only one that was faithful (for the most part) to the source material.

Ok. Just a bit of character background for this scene.: Richard and Paul have known eachother for years. Richard might be Bi, but he and Paul messed around growing up together. Richard was sent off to 'boys camp'. Richard was also subjected to 'conversion therapy' which included shock treatments. But alas, Richard is 'old money' and still loves Paul. Meanwhile Paul's mother is in love with Richard's Family money. But Paul doesn't love Richard. Anymore. But Paul and Richard can always have 'Faith'
@7n154
@7n154 6 месяцев назад
. . But Richard "Dick" will always love Paul. It's why he was acting out at dinner and calling Paul "pretty boy". Because Richard loves Paul. He acted out because he was heartbroken that Paul was disinterested. Paul was breaking Richard's heart. The Rules of Attraction.
