Review of Faith Healer by Brian Friel streamed live from the Old Vic. Michael Sheen, David Threlfall & Indira Varma starred in this socially distanced production broadcast on Zoom. Great play, great acting- so why did Paul Seven Lewis think it didn't work?
Faith Healer was performed at the Old Vic via Zoom in September 2020. The recording will be streamed at 7.30pm on 20-22 January 2021. Tickets from oldvictheatre.com

I saw it tonight. I agree that there were too many close ups and some seemed to be a bit awkward. Very much enjoyed the play though. I do think that a 10 min break in the middle would have been welcomed. But overall I love plays on zoom or other online platforms as it gives people who can’t afford to go to the theatre, those with mobility or health issues, those with childcare or elder care challenges and those who don’t live near a venue the ability to see great theatre. I hope that it doesn’t completely disappear post-Covid

Yes. I’m hoping that in future theatres will automatically be streaming their productions, at least the subsidised ones. I think they’ve shown that, while it might be different to being in the theatre, the experience is still worthwhile, Apart from the fact that some sell out, it does give many more of us who can’t afford the tickets, or live too far away to see these wonderful plays and actors. But I hope they’ll do it via a website (as with Sea Wall) that can be viewed on a proper telly. I dot know about you but I prefer the NTLive cinema screenings for productions where large scale is important.

One Minute Theatre Reviews I’ve also seen the NT productions in cinema and have very much enjoyed them. But some don’t have cinemas near them that show the productions so they can view them. An at home paid platform as you suggest opens up more options for viewers and opportunities for an international audience. And another income stream for struggling theatres as well!

I agree in regards to the clunky, close-ups and the manual zooming injected some awkwardness into the performances but it shined all the way still for me. Michael Sheen is an absolute miracle!

I agree about Michael Sheen but I thought all three were amazing. I don't think I praised Indira Varma enough in my review. I found her mesmerising. David Threlfall's funny, sad Teddy was touching.

You can’t, I’m sorry to say. They only did five performances all streamed live. So unless it was recorded for future transmission, it’s finished. They sold a thousand tickets for each performance which I think is the maximum capacity for Zoom and also similar to the size of a live audience at the Old Vic. For a fundraising exercise, they certainly limited their potential for raising funds. It’s also a great shame more people couldn’t see this show.

I liked Faith Healer overall, though the camera work could have been improved.

It's a difficult balance to make it look good on screen but keep the sense of theatre

In theatre, perhaps minimal camera work is best.

True. I thought the Chichester production of Crave did it well.
