For those who still believe that the rescuers did nonsense things: there are no ways they can pull that elephant off the canal, they have to make him panic so he has no other choice but climb over the dam down to the lower side of the canal where they can guide him to the stairway. They are not experts so don't judge their skills or equipments, they are just villagers who don't give up trying to help that poor animal and they really got It done.

Yep. What they did might not have been ideal but in the end they saved that elephant. It's important for people to not play hero tho. If there is an authority or any group specialized in rescuing animals, the first thing you do is call them before trying to do anything. A sad example is when people try to help whales stucked at the beach and some just pour water in the hole on top of them, but thats their nose, some whales ended up drowning because people without knowledge tried to help them the wrong way. But I dont blame people for trying to help when they are in a situation where they cant count on an specialized group. In the end it makes me truly happy that so many people would go out of their way to help animals

This is a very common incident in Sri Lanka as this video depicts. We love animals so much and I'm proud to say I'm a Sri Lankan. Sri Lankas most popular TV show, "Atapattama" shows plenty of such elephants who are helped by general public and wild life officers.

My heart was sinking to such a huge animal fell in the canal . All did a great job Lots of love to Srilanka s for their love & concern to their wild animals. Great relief to see the elephant safe but government should make some provisions to avoid such accidents.

These people did the best thing they could do in the situation. They thought what can be done to help the animal rather than why it happened. The animal got a nice bath and a new life, people got nice experience and good memories. Who gets a chance to be a part of such wonderful deed.

Bloody hell, my heart beat like a drum, when the poor thing kept going under I thought it was going to drown. What a happy ending, I was with him/her all the way. Many thanks and God bless all the people who didn't give up but stayed there to the end, making a noise to encourage the elephant who I am sure knew that the kind humans were trying to help her/him. Struggle? He playfully dipped underwater, blew bubbles, bathed his trunk in the waterfall. He tried to shoo the humans away, but they were relentless! Annoyed, he walked up out of there all on his own.

Comments on here complain about how this unfortunate elephant got no help from the people. What would you do without any equipment, not even a decent rope to aid a massive size animal fighting high and deep water current? The animal understood everyone was cheering him/her up. It was the syncronized well wish mental power of the people that had the animal fighting. If this was an isolated place, whith no one around, this animal would have drowned. Though apparently the elephant got out by itself, it was guided to the spot for a walkout be possible. Happy outcome is what counts!

That is what happens in India. When a man ended up in cheetah enclosure in a zoo for more than an hour in front of a Cheetah, no one including zoo keepers responded. They don't even have tranquilizer gun even if they have they probably dont know how to use them or don't care, eventually cheetah killed the person. When they can't rescue a human from zoo, how can they rescue wild animal from field.
