Wherever you are, Jim, I miss you. I do not know you, I never met you but I love you. Those arpeggios in Zombie Eaters and also the right hand rhythm there and in Surprise! are sublime. All-history classic composition and performance.
Big Jim, with his singular tone and style, are sorely missed. He added a dynamic to this band that was never replicated. His shoes were never truly filled.
@@faith22112 yeah man i never get into the new guitar players i mean they are great in what they do but the band lost that thing that they had whit jim ,the band had more personality whit him the other dudes just where there , and they suck playing the stuff from jim martin era
First festival I ever went to. My best buddy and I went underage... Such a good show. We went to Download for the reunion, then the next Download they played at. Fantomas, Tomahawk. We met Patton after the Fantomas show. My best buddy died last month. I'm so sad. Last thing he gave me was the FNM book. Also have his FNM t-shirt from 1992. I'm gonna miss you buddy.
Dude you went to their peak gigs and you'll have something to remember always have the good times! Your bro is up there smiling in the Land of Sunshine!
Patton has put on a masterclass here. Find me a performance in rock with more energy and venom than this. Completely intense and obviously an outlet for the tensions within the band at that time. A peak performance that shouldn't be forgotten.
I play alot of Faith no More songs with my electric guitar,it sounds amazing, and I also love to sing their songs, and also the rarities...it's such an amazing band, and Jim Martin was,is and always will be their greatest guitarist,no matter what,I like all their guitarists but Jim was the best, period.I love to sing like Mike!
Jim literally taught me how to play guitar. well. You Fat Bastards did. I've seen them a few times since Jon Hudson joined and while I like the new music, Jim was definitely better.
@@ziggypop79 Did they fire him or did he leave the band? To me, Jim was their secret weapon, he kept their music from getting to off the wall, goofy. Idk, he knew exactly what to and when to and when not to play which is not an easy thing to do. They're just not the same w/o Jim.
@@johntoughlove479 They fired him by fax! Jim didn’t like the goofy direction and silly songs and wanted them to play heavier, more structured songs like The Real Thing. From what I’ve read the main problem has been Billy Gould not respecting Jim and basically driving him out the band. I think they basically became jealous of Jim’s celebrity and appearing in movies like Bill & Ted and wanted him gone.
Yeah totally. In the beginning of Caffeine they're just letting out the madness of 1 year of touring. This is so interesting, the band that went on tour in 92 came out as totally different band in 93, more harsh and Mike's image is totally changed.
Highlights 8:20 Moment of silence for GG Allin 16:55 Stop it silly 18:00 Patton dancing after mic goes dead 26:05 Are you peaking yet? 34:54 Everybody’s Quitting 40:08 How are you? Ask Jim… 45:18 Last time you’ll hear this song 1:24:44 Epic backflip
Seen them 8 times since 1980 and don't care who does or doesn't agree....Jim Martin brought something to this band that was an absolutely essential ingredient. Yes Patton is Patton....but the 3 times I saw them with Jim were head and shoulders over any of the shows I saw them play with other guitarists. Yes the other shows were solid but definitely a step down.
mr c I do recall radio one(BBC) playing 5 or 6 songs from this gig at the time so might well be their recording of it with footage that was available. Personally seen them about 4 times before this and (currently) 6 times after, never seen even an 8/10 or 9/10 show was always 10/10. Different class. 🤘🏼
He'll always be THE FNM guitarist that could never be replaced. His riffs were brilliant and perfect for each song. No one came close..and MP though I love him so, he knows it.
@@DuspHasInfluenza Thanks. Yeah MP was in my opinion a dick to him. They could not have ever wrote EPIC without the brilliance of Jims guitar And also the riffs on surprise you're dead are badass
back in the late 80s i wasnt a big Faith No More fan. Chuck was a decent singer with his own style and it was ok. But after Patton joined it was totally different, in a good way. Ive seen them at least 8x , they werent usually the headliner. But sometimes they were better than the bands i came to see. Patton was always a skinny beny back then but he had this huge voice! I think he's become one of the best singers Ive heard, such versatility and range...its uncommon today with all the computerized vocal tools bands use, no talent needed. Maybe someday he'll get inducted in the music hall of fame.
james corvett no Mike doesn’t have enough talent, to much studio help for his voice/vocals... he’s just a copy of the Ramones and learned how to sound like, punk, metal, screaming and no real singing abilities! Sorry but it’s the truth. And this isn’t about Mike anyway, it’s supposed to be about Jim Martin!
Fucking right! In fact, when ever did Jim's guitar not sound sweet as fuck? His sound is so excellently consistent, surely a testament to brilliant technique and skill. That's why he's a cut above other FNM guitarists, as so many others have pointed out in these comments. Fucking sweet!
@@pd21248 INDEED - Jim was always amazing live, he just had a bad split with MikeP and Billy the most (it seems) and he was out. He is THE guitarist of FNM
I always gush all over FNM videos so this is no different... Holy shit, this is amazing & out of this world! The whole band is on fire, Jim definitely left on a high note performance wise! & Mike is on another level here... What else can I say ;)
Them screams at the start of Caffeine are how you start a show, it sets the gig up, as for Jizzlobber, well that's out of this world, this show got panned back in the day for Patton's "Not giving a shit performance", but for me it was the of the best bootlegs I ever saw.
Lee Knott I was there. It was an insane performance. You cant see it cos of crap camerawork, but when he was screaming at the start of Caffeine, he was literally spazzing himself from one side of the stage to the other, writhing and screaming and throwing himself about. The best performance I've seen however is Sheffield Arena 5th Dec 1992. Towering performance. Radio 1 recorded it. I have a VHS copy, camerawork not much better than this however.
I've heard the audio of this show a million times but never seen the video, very cool. Things like when Mike falls on his ass during Midlife Crisis and yells "OW!" -- I never knew why he said that before! Really brings a whole new dimension to this classic performance!
When he says "Pretty close" I thought he was mocking the band's backup vocals and it was actually about someone throwing a bottle at him from the audience. Amazing.

And also I envy anyone who was at this show or saw the band in this era. Seriously pisses me off that I was born in 1986. We just don't have bands or front men that completely lose their minds in stage anymore. Thank you for uploading
30 years of this mind-blowing show today. I first heard some of these live versions that came in the 'Evidence Live' bootleg and then discovered this video around 2007. I've kept coming back ever since. No other live act can top this combination of anger/energy/insanity.
Thank you to whoever filmed this. I was in that pit reaching highs, oblivious to the mastery in front of me but loving the music so much it imprinted on my life and nearly 30 years later I still play this band almost daily. Legend is overly used but this band at this point with these people ....... worthy.
@@ryszardwawelski7139 Same.. definitely one of the best. Even with MP feeling sooo pent up with frustration. I love Mike but his behavior toward Jim was unwarranted and unnecessary in this last show especially.. same goes Ruddy Bottom. A really personal reason between JM and MP that pissed him off since the Australian tour til the end of the Angel Dust tour. Mike still remembers it well..
thank you sooo much for this upload. i remember wanting to go to this so badly ,if i remember right cypress hill were there too, i did manage to get to reading that year (my first festival) and i havent looked back since. thanks again dude
I was at the gig back in the day, strong memories it was great! I remember getting mangled in the crowd when caffeine kicked in lol, saw them a few months before at the NEC November 92, that was even better, anyone who went will remember the flying chair seats :D
Muito bom, é como se eu pudesse voltar no tempo e assistir na platéia em 1993, tinha apenas nove anos na época, o audio está muito bom, melhor fase da banda e melhor formação!!! Foda!!!
Yeah, i noticed that too. I didn't even know that Jim was still around when he was getting into that phase. Funnily enough, Jim left because the band was getting "soft", and the second he was out they released an album which had a lot of heavy, batshit crazy songs (Ugly in the morning, Cuckoo for caca and Get out, for some extent).
First tour I saw them in Deinze, Belgium. Amazing! I motioned Mike to jump in the crowd... he looked me in the eyes, very serious and somersaulted and landed on his back on the heads of my neighbours! I swear I would never motion any artist to do anything on stage ever again...
I had just turned 29. FNM at Phoenix was a late birthday celebration. Still one of my favourite festival gigs ever. The crowd was manic that night. So pleased to see this on here!
+Richard and Buttercup Yeah, for those of us that were there, the crowd was a bit insane and kudos to anyone for carrying in a VHS camera and attempting to film. However, should have not zoomed in a much cos we cant see the stage set up, just narrow, shaky close ups.
+Jonny Davies i very much doubt that someone could just walk in an film with a VHS camera, particularly back then when they were able to pick up people trying to get boot legs. they only started letting people sit there and film (instead of enjoying the damn show) when people had a HD phone in there damn pockets. my impression is someone near the sound engineer filmed it , with the full knowledge of the band, and didn't really know what they were doing and have crowed jumping all around. it would also explain why the audio is not distorted to hell . but that just my opinion.
Damn this is a total find. Agree that it's unfortunate that there wasn't an official video from this era. But at least the audio of this is pro! And even the home video style has a fnm fuckery attitude tbf
Hearing this show just reminds me of how much Chino Moreno from the Deftones was influenced by Patton's way of singing. Those screams, the soft/dramatic parts... Idk, it just really reminds me of Chino's way of singing
I love Mike I do but my god he is on 10 all the time. And I don’t think I know Jim just couldn’t take it anymore. You can see it in interviews and on stage it’s just overwhelming. I see it more now that I’m older as well. All that said I’m not blaming Mike. Not at all. Truth be told that dynamic played a lot into those two albums which where insanely good.
I'm 63 yrs old and I'll tell ya I love me some Mike Patton. This motherfucker has such energy. And its seems he takes absolutely nothing serious while poking fun at you, me the song he's performing and himself as well and having a fukin' good time while doing it. Love his interpretation of Easy Like Sunday Morning and I Started A Joke, and of course Epic.
This just popped up on my feed I was at this gig jumping around like a nut case I also went to every Phoenix festival that was on until its sad end in 97 when I had a back stage pass and found myself standing next to Mike Patton at the bar the day they played that year, the 90s were crazy times for me .
Jizzlobber here is for me the best live perfomance of any song by any band EVER!! Let me include Mark Bowen and caffeine and... The whole concert is the best ever .... Say No More... Faith No More...this is just to good ;)
