Excellent analysis !! I am a recent subscriber to your talks on political science and the current affairs. I admire your erudition, vast reading and versatility. I have seen and heard your singing, too. I am from India, and it is a pleasant experience to see a contemporary Pakistani strumming guitar. While analysing Faiz, you diplomatically omitted a vital aspect of this greatest poet of the 20th century : Faiz was a Marxist in his core ideology. Just like Sahir, Kaifi and many other Urdu poets of India. Unfortunately, esp in the sub-continent, being a leftist has become a slur, which is an alarming symptom of the rise of Right-wing politics dominated by the priestly class and the filthy rich.. And it is true on both sides of the border. Anyway, hats off to you!

Faiz got married in Srinagar Indian occupied Kashmir and sheikh Abdullah performed his nikkah aswell - he took part in freedom struggle of Kashmir before Mullahs take it over

Faiz is basically a rebel poet. Any topic in his poetry brings a rebellious flavor with it. His expression of love for his beloved is extremely rebellious as well as his love for his beloved country. He doesn't differentiate between his lover and his country. It often seems difficult to figure out about whom he is talking.

Great & laudable efforts..am reading Faiz since 1985 & every time I read Faiz , I think I read something new. You are a great teacher, but, one has to understand the background for each poem, he wrote. For instance he wrote "Mujh sey pehli si mohabat" in the backdrop of great Depressions, of 30s.. No other poet in the world has written any POETRY, about the 30s Economic depressions. Thank you Taimoor Jan..❤️

Dr. sahib thank you for absolutely massacring the first line of the last sher that you read :), the actual line is: ik tarz-e-taġhāful hai so vo un ko mubārak taghaful is from the word ghaflat and is such a beautiful word. There is no word taghwal or what ever you were trying to say.

sir i dono what camera u use but i see ur hand moment gets blurry, the reason camera shutter speed is less then frame rate,it should be double, r even more for clarity.

Faiz in my opinion is his own genre! Professor T. Rahman was probably indicating that.

4:22 “makam Faiz koyi rah mei jacha hi nahi jo kuh e yaar se nikle to su e dar châle” he wrote this for Shaheed Bhagat Singh and his two co revolutionaries who were all hanged in Lahore Jail in 1930s. The legend is that they had kissed the hangman’s noose before their hanging. Hence the line “naseh pandgaro rah guzar to dekho ”. The line means “You who give sermons first see the path they walked”.

I enjoyed a couple of your lectures in the past, but it looks like it is the first time you have attempted literature. With due respect, I would suggest, read more in fact just keep reading as otherwise you will end up passing fleeting statements. I know it is hard to conclude anything so easily when it comes to interpretation of poetry of a legend like Faiz. I hope you will take it with no hard feelings.
