In this captivating documentary, we delve into the intriguing history of wax figures and animatronics, tracing their evolution and significance as mechanical reproductions of the human body. Join us on a journey through time as we uncover the origins of these lifelike creations and their impact on art, science, and culture.
Drawing inspiration from Walter Benjamin's seminal essay on mechanical reproduction, we examine the unique aura and presence of anthropomorphic puppets, wax figures, and audio-animatronics. While these artworks possess a live aura as works of art, they lack the distinct aura of human life and capacity for experience.
Discover how humans have strived to bridge the uncanny valley by creating artificial bodies that closely approximate human movement. From pneumatic to electronic animation, we explore the efforts made to make these artificial bodies believable while also serving as labor-saving devices, reducing the need for live performers.
Uncover the fascinating process behind creating realistic wax figures, which has remained largely unchanged over centuries. We compare the techniques used in the 1889 Scientific American abstract to those employed by modern sculptors, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship involved in capturing every detail of the subject's face, eyes, and hair.
Explore the rich history of wax figures, from their use as plot devices in literary works to their role in anatomy research and bronze casting. Witness how the wax figures acted as body doubles, aiding researchers and students in studying human anatomy during the eighteenth century.
Travel further through time to witness the emergence of robotic performers and early automata. From the mechanical lion designed by Leonardo da Vinci to the famous Elektro: The Moto Man and Sparky, the animatronic dog, we showcase the advancements in animatronics that captivated audiences and revolutionized entertainment.
Uncover the origins of the word "robot" and its representation as a labor-saving device, echoing Carl Chapek's play R.U.R. as an allegory of worker revolts. Witness how animatronics became a key focus for the Walt Disney Company, as they sought to invent a three-dimensional form of animation. From early attempts at robotic theater to the rapid technological developments showcased at the 1964 New York World's Fair, we witness the evolution of animatronic technology.
Understand the challenges faced in replicating human skin for animatronics, with materials engineers working tirelessly to create functional and believable skin. Discover how vinyl and latex were used to envelop fiberglass skeletons, ensuring that even distant audiences could appreciate the lifelike features of these figures. Witness the importance of durability and flexibility for maintaining the believability of animatronics and preventing them from descending into the uncanny valley.
Finally, glimpse into the future as animatronics integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) to become interactive. Explore the patent filed by Gene P. Hamilton in 2007, proposing an AI system that models the physical behavior and actions of historical figures. Imagine the unique experience of conversing with figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, and Sir Winston Churchill in "real time," blurring the line between human and machine.

Like I said on the short that brought me here: It's a result of the fall. We try to mimic God. Enjoyed the full program, too. Now subbed and looking forward to more from you!

Thanks for following up on the full video! We really do try to create the uncanny, but it makes sense that humans replicate themselves using art and technology. Best wishes, Historical Method Man

What a very interesting retrospective. However I do wonder how you think the new component of AI would allow the robots to consider revolt?

Based on the patent that I've seen (as referenced in the video and in the citations below), there are many limitations in that brain model. However, the singularity is something a science expert would be more equipped to consider, as I am merely an historian. It is something I have nightmares about, but while theme parks will be where hardware and software meet, I do not predict that they will be the site of artificial humanity. After all, an only software program could possibly do more damage than a robot with limited movement.
