FAKE SILVER COIN 

There's now enough of fakes out there that everyone needs to be testing all the silver they get.

The ping test is deceptive. Some coins have a really dull sound but are still real (ex: canadian maple leaf). I would say a combination of weight, density and a magnetic slide is your best bet. It's impossible to fake these 3 things at once.

Ping, weight, magnet, acid... can all be faked. Specific gravity test using scales, a glass of water and some tooth floss, is incredibly accurate, but only for fine/pure metals.

Always buy from a reputable dealer

You say a magnet shouldn't stick to it but it should react with the magnet

I had a similar incident at International Diamond Center Altamonte Springs, FL. I purchased 3 (1) oz gold RMC bars with Assay Cards. All 3 did not test 999.9 fine and I returned them to the store. Luckily for me the store agreed to exchange them for the real thing. Be careful when buying gold and silver. Crooks in suits everywhere. I’ll never buy another thing from IDC.

You can place an ice cube on the coin. Real silver will melt the ice cube very quick, this is because of the difference in their conductivity. Silver is a highly conductive metal. The conductivity of silver is 15 times more than that of steel. It means that silver can give away heat faster or it can absorb heat faster.

I've found that Perth Mint coins (kangaroos, kookaburras etc) give off a noticeably duller ping, which will still check out ok with the apps but is much harder to inspire confidence by the untrained ears alone. I actually stopped stacking Kangaroos because of it. Over here in Australia I could get Krugerrands for the same price and those don't seem to have that same quirk.

I've just discovered a very interesting and valuable addition to security when testing if a sovereign silver coin is fake or not!! So, I'm new to stacking and testing was one of the first things on my list. I'm a piano tuner. When we tap a 1oz government issued silver coin it produces a distinct 'zing'. But what it also produces is *the same pitch*. They all zing at the same pitch. That pitch is the top note on a piano which is tuned to concert pitch. They all zing to the top C on a piano (at concert pitch).

You can also put the magnet on it, and if it’s silver, the magnet will roll slowly across it due to the diamagnetic properties of silver. I’m guessing that other coin is an amalgamation of other metals, maybe lead, copper, or brass, these aren’t diamagnetic. I sometimes test by setting the magnet down on the flat side, if it slides slowly it’s good silver

I have around 1500 silver eagles that I bought last year. I made a $37.5k purchase that is now worth quite a bit more. I’m gonna save them. With the way the economy is going right now, we may have a repeat of the last economy tank, and then I can really cash out, and hopefully buy a Hellcat lol 😆

Can you make a short using the "ice test" with these same coins?

I could tell because it did not have a cartwheel effect.

Where did you buy the fake one from?

does the ping tester only work for rounds and coins? what about bars? A lot of bars come rapped in plastic and I don't want to remove the plastic

No fake coin has ever passed the ping test

Is the ping test conclusive for generic rounds if the pass the other tests?

do the shaking test ... its also how the magnet moves across the metal ... the inherit impedance or lenz force

I would bet that fake is made of copper just do density test.

where you got them from?

I could tell just by the detail these coins are super detailed and you just can't get it from casting.

I've got some Buffalo silver ozs from about 2011, I ran a pretty strong magnet(idk what material it is, looks like the flinty speaker kind) over the edges and swear I feel a slight pull.. but not from any of my pre65 silver. The marking looks like 2 m's sideways mirroring each other. Now I have to try a ping test, after weighing.

Your ping test was awful just lightly tap the edge, no need to batter it bud

the ping tester apps don't work. Try pinging for something that you 100% know it's not. It'll often pass the tests.

That app passed a 90% silver as 999 when I used it though, so not super accurate.

Specific gravity and magnet slide test work as well and very simple to do.

Just drop your coin on a hard wood table. The silver has a hardness higher than bronze, the sound it hits the table has a distinct high pitch.

I have an Old Pirate Coin but I can't find anything about it and it has a Copper line in it so I think its fake, do anyone kno anything about it??

Does anyone make an eddy current device to test these? Each material and each type of coin should have its own signature. It would be really easy to tell if silver is doped with anything or if it is junk clad with silver. You should just have to have a signature reading from a known sample. ... amirite?...or amirong? If aircraft inductive proximity sensors can tell the difference between steel and copper targets then why couldn't it be fine tuned? This has to exist??

I wouldn't trust that sound test they didn't sound too different from each other best to do the chemical test

I like sticking it in an ice cube to test my silver, melts it fast… will it damage coins though?

I had a problem once I took some to a pawn shop he tested with a magnet and chemical test and he said it faild every one I gave him. I was in shock and could not believe it as I got them from bullion by post. I went to a different pawn shop and he pulled out a x-ray gun and each coin tested positive for fine silver. And he gave me a loan. I don't if I should keep stacking. Any one with some sort of info about this

I would have liked to have seen each coin in a CLOSE UP PHOTO OF EACH SIDE OF EACH COIN. TO SEE THE SUBTLE DIFFERENCE IN REAL AND FAKE. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE LINES IN THE DRESS ON THE OBVERSE ALMOST LOOKED SCRATCHED IN RATHER THAN THE DIE IMPRESSING THE LINES. ALSO IN THE FAKE THOSE SAME LINES DIDNT SHOW UP DEFINED AS THE LINES CROSSED THE CENTER OF THE BODY AND CENTER OF THE COIN.

I got a fake 1800 Bust coin I paid a buck for. it stuck right to the magnet. Sold it for a buck.

There are other ways of getting this done that'll be absolutely sure whether it's fake or real.. the best answer is never buy precious metals from anybody but a reputable precious metal dealer we've been in business for at least 20 years.. but if you insist upon being twins from The stranger you tell them....

You somehow managed to do all the tests wrong

I can literally drop and handful of coins on a wooden table and tell if there is any silver in the pile. It really helps having 20/20 hearing. 😁 Its true though, silver is NOT magnetic. HOWEVER, if you build a small slide and place a neodymium magnet half way down on the underside, then lay the coin flat at the top and let it slide down, a SILVER coin will actually slow down traveling over the magnet, but not stop. Silver is the ONLY metal that does this.

I ended up with four of those fake China coins just like the above video… Same thing the China company said they were real, then they tried to refund me US$50… I’m going to make cool rings out of them😅
