On Wednesday, Jan. 24th, 2018 SpaceX completed the first static fire test of the Falcon Heavy launch vehicle. When Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.
Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

@odysseusrex5908
@odysseusrex5908 6 лет назад
Umm, actually, the Shuttle was capable of handling, and did handle, a far wider range of missions than the Saturn 5 or, frankly, any other vehicle that has ever existed. It was the world's first true spaceship. We will not see its like again until Elon gets the BFR flying.
@PhillipLandmeier
@PhillipLandmeier 6 лет назад
Odysseus Rex Absolutely, a wide range of missions within 700 km of Earth's surface. But that's not what I said. The shuttle is designed to launch the shuttle. It is not a general purpose heavy lift launch system.

The whole idea of falcon heavy is that it was originally designed to take humans to the Moon and Mars. The whole idea of the BFR is that, it will be used as an interplanetary rocket, planet colonisation(which there's a load of cool art for) and will also replace the other 3 SpaceX rockets due to its extremely low cost compared to its rivals

The launch of the Falcon Heavy is going to be one of the most watched live rocket launches of all time. Could it be the most watched? It will not just be watched here on the Spacex stream, but it will also be streamed live with commentary on several other youtube channels and on places like Twitch, and those people lucky enough to watch this in person at KSC will also be watching online and/or streaming the event themselves to friends and family using their smartphones. Share this video and lets try to make the Falcon Heavy launch the most watched launch in history!
@MrBrianYoder
@MrBrianYoder 6 лет назад
Unlikely. While I will sure be watching and a lot of others will be too, the Apollo 11 launch was a practically universally watched event (as was the landing). People in every corner of the world were watching the spectacle. FH will be awesome but it will not beat Apollo 11 for audience size.
@sirmonkey2063
@sirmonkey2063 6 лет назад
you have to consider the advancement in technology and communication.. while apollo 11 was broadcasted world wide, the amount of people in the world that had tv's is nothing compared to the amount of people with tv's and internet access now.. personally i probably won't be watching it live due to my work schedule but thankfully this isn't 1969 and i can watch the VOD later.
@jimoflh5773
@jimoflh5773 6 лет назад
Probably not. People aren’t as interested in space as they was when man first landed on the moon.. people are clueless these days. Every time they send a rocket up everyone seems to think it’s a ufo or a comet.
@UmakanthG
@UmakanthG 6 лет назад
I heard Apollo 11 events and moon landing on radio, not via TV. Except for major cities, TV came to many parts of India only in 1975. Today, almost all parts of the world have TVs and cell phones and so the number of viewers is huge compared to 1969.

No, I am not joking. Praying doesn't change the physical composition of the rocket or the laws of physics; so the result will be the same regardless of whether 1 million people pray or not. Just like how when you pray before eating a meal, it doesn't make the food any different; the nutritional value is still the same

it is not sped up - keep your eye on the cloud by the rocket.

It was sped up. Other videos of the same static fire are significantly longer, and you can match features in the smoke cloud during the single long cut to show that the long cut was sped up.

They would lost mush more money if a RUD event would happen because of something that could have been identified by these tests and solved before launch....
@RedSoul001
@RedSoul001 6 лет назад
Liquid fuel is dirt cheap. It cost way more to pay for the people that worked on this than it did for the fuel. Also you have to run a test before hand so that you can fix one rocket on the ground and instead of blowing up 27 rockets in mid air.
@juliannnnnn
@juliannnnnn 6 лет назад
Nope. 4 seconds of delta V only should cost around $1,000, if that.
@sirmonkey2063
@sirmonkey2063 6 лет назад
if i remember correctly it's around 640k dollars to fill each rocket in fuel cost.. so the static fire probably cost them around 100k in fuel.. where the expense will be is them paying all the people that are now tasked with inspecting the rocket + launch platform for the next week. it's worth it though over what it would cost to replace the entire thing if it failed.

Charles Benson the bird appeared to fly past very quickly due to it being very close to the camera, (and most likely it being scared shitless by the sudden burst of sound from the rocket), and most likely the camera being focused on the rocket in the distance.. You can tell the video is not sped up by the motion of the venting cloud of gasses pre-firing and the expanding cloud post-firing.. But I was expecting a full test burn, or at least a minute or so, so we have more time to enjoy to awesomeness of this incredible machine.. I guess we will just have to wait til it actually launches for that spectacle..
@lajoswinkler

Who said it's 12 seconds? Some dummy with a camera on Twitter, standing far from the launch pad. It was little over 6 seconds.
@nathanaelvetters2684

Gene Lomas it's not going to burn for a full minute lol, it would melt the launchpad. It's somewhat amazing that it can even withstand this.
