This falconry video is an introduction to Northern goshawks. Both old world goshawks and American Goshawks. Goshawks have been trained since the dawn of falconry. They are arguably the most useful and versatile hunting raptor in the sport of falconry. Goshawks have been trained and hunted by falconers in many countries and are now captive bred in breeding programs. They are illusive, moody, insanely fast and agile. They have a framerate to rival any other raptor or mammalian predator. Training them correctly is key to success. This video talks about their abilities, training, pros and cons, and the different subspecies of northern goshawk.
In the video I reference a new facebook page I set up to share falconry videos and information and to connect falconers all over the world. You can find that facebook page here:

I got this video recommended through the google page on my phone and damn, I clearly stumbled upon a living lexika of falconry! The enthusiasm, the knowledge, the joy and care to talk about these wonderful creatures is a sight and sound to behold! Subbed m8. I may never have looked for this, but I'm glad I found this. I recently looked a lot into hunting and guns via Ron Spoomer and wildlife has been a lifelong interest of mine, which I even for a short time could work with. 20yo, Dresden, Germany

I absolutely love these longer form species spotlight episodes. This may be the best yet. Would love a follow up in similar form talking more about range of prey, flight/hunting style. (Have you considered a zoom style video with someone who has one that can share an anecdote or two?)

Thank you Ben. Your videos always cheer me up after bad day at work. I live in Andalucia, and was sitting on a local bus, as car in the garage, and heard your introductory music. A lad was watching you on his phone, he said was lining up your videos for after work too!

Nice timing on this video Ben. I just picked up my first goshawk a couple weeks ago. A second year tiercel Finnish/Siberian cross. Totally understand the constant troubleshooting. Really looking forward to next season!!

Had the privilege of flying a 33oz Hen Passage Goshawk that I trapped on the Appalachian Trail. 1) Legend Roy Frock witnessed me hooding without even flinching (a lot of practice and patience for sure); moreover, I knelled right next to Roy Frock's bow trap while he caught and banded -- goes to show raptors only see movement. 2) remarkable bird that took squirrels, ducks, pheasants, and rabbits with ease -- got its butt kicked trying to take a Turkey and was dazed & confused for about a minute and never flew at one after that (I got some pushback that I was flying her about 1 to 1.5 oz overweight -- has anybody taken a Turkey with a Goshawk?). 3) released the Gos in the Spring as I do all Passage Birds since I don't like the moult and passage birds deserve to be in the Wild. 4) Although some might think controversial, I had a Legend Bill McBride teach me to always keep the Bird in the dark to prevent feather damage and dull talons -- the Gos only seen the light when training & hunting.

first season flying a goshawk. It was easier to get them on game than I thought. The challenging part was all the small behavior problems at home.

accipiters are easy in that way. You just have to put game in front of them and they enter themselves. Keeping them is a constant challenge, but that’s what makes them so fun 😁

Loving your videos in the last week after having some of them pop up for me :) My Vizsla just went through treatments for aspergillosis and I definitely wouldn't wish it upon any bird, dog or human. Thanks so much for all the info!

Not to mention old-world goshawks have more resilient feathers. I love Goshawks but do not have enough time to work one considering a full-time job. Later will be better.

I agree about aggression...my rt figured out i was trying to swap her kills for a large reward and now these swaps require a gloved hand. This is my fault in training, but if and when I release her, she will not let go of her food in the wild!

So I live in northern Illinois and I really like falconry. I hope someday I could have raptors and the one I want the most would be a gyrfalcon. I know they are difficult but I would work my way there you know. But here in IL just a couple days ago it was in the seventies but that night we had storms and tornados and the next day was in the twenties feeling like zero. I don’t know if gyrfalcons can deal with that because I know they are sensitive to weather. Maybe a hybrid?

I've been wanting to get into falconry so bad recently, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to put the proper time into it and, naturally, other concerns that I'll always come up with. And of course, as if to taunt me, I come home from work today and see a red tail circling something and dive bomb it on the other side of the tree line by my house!

Amazing! You very accurately described working with a goshawk as a dance! That's right, you need to work with him as a partner. I'm sorry for my English - it's not my native language. I hunted pheasants with a male goshawk. Be sure to write a book about the direction of aggression - this is very necessary for many reasons. In particular, it is especially important for the goshawk. How can I even buy your book in another country? I will be grateful for the answer.

Can't agree more with your thoughts on the falconer being ready. I always flew a Finish Goshawk in my earlier years, no family, worked when I wasn't . Haven't flown 1 for years but this year I plan on semi retiring and Goshawking again. Can't wait

Sooooo....if you plan to have a Goshawk, you ABSOLUTELY need to live somewhere that you have quarry available! Unless you like a diet of pigeon, maybe not an idea "city bird"?

Me. *trying to watch Ben's new video* Ruby, the resident wild Cooper's hawk: *buzzing her reflection in the skylight* ACCIPITER TROUBLESHOOTING NEEDED LOL 😂 She's never done this, before, and she's lived here nearly a decade. (No I don't really expect help, I'm not getting on the roof and tarping it, she'll get over it... eventually. I'll go fill the birdbaths, that ought to distract her.)

do Goshawks also scavenge carrion in the wild?
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 7 месяцев назад
Books will generally say "no", but ANY raptor will scavenge if pushed to it. Some raptors actively look for opportunities to scavenge, and others do just when they are pushed to it from hunger. I would say that goshawks are less prone to scavenge. But I have seen many photos on trail cameras of goshawks in the winter being willing to scavenge off of a deer carcass.

Yes, Lots of baited goshawk wildlife vids in front of hides on youtube. They often have common buzzards, rough legged buzzards, and ravens on those carcasses as well. Those birds get used to free food and come back most days. Teaches you a a bit about pecking order between similar sized raptors though. Goshawks and ravens tend to wait for the buzzards to finish first but not always.

Taxonomy has been overblown almost from the get go. I see an accipiter and see basically the same Bird versus a buteo, just like I look at ANY NUMBER of crazy different dog breeds (with differences in region, size, color, vocalization, behavioral differences) and wolves and see basically the same canine versus a dhole or fox. (And I'm not even so sure of the differences between some birds of prey as I am some dog species. Viable harris hawk hybrids and other combos - many occuring in nature - are breaking taxonomy molds all over the place.)
