Falconers love birds of prey. People dont realize 90% of birds of prey die before there first year. Falconers help preserve the species be it a hawk or falcon or eagle

My heart goes out to you my friend.. Your story is heartbreaking, and I admire your self control.. It would have taken a lot to not go John Wick on that rehab center..

Thank you for this very important video. I will share with everyone I know. There rare many judgmental but kindhearted people out there that just need to be educated on how falconers are actually HEROS and responsible for bringing birds of prey back from the brink of extinction. Animal lovers have the worst misconceptions of falconry.

This is an important life lesson. Too often we see pictures or video clips without the entire story and we are urged to make judgements based on this by others or the media. Glad Ben explained why that’s a bad idea to jump to conclusions and blame a group like falconers or police or any other group or person without the entire story. Thanks Ben.

I actually read half of a Falconry book last year, and one of the things that was mentioned was the length of the jesses. The only thing that I didn't know about until now is that many people do Falconry illegally! To tell you the truth, I'd be seriously afraid to do Falconry without a permit. The reason for that is because I know that a lot that can go wrong even when I least expect it! Your story about your Peregrine is so sad! She would have been better off not being found! Whoever was responsible for putting your bird in a crate should be locked up, or at least get the rehab center's license revoked. Your Peregrine needed a proper sized enclosure, and clearly they didn't give that to her.

Great video. A similar situation is people assuming someone with a gun in the woods is a licensed hunter. People could assume someone who poached is a hunter.

Thank you for sharing your story. It’s a great teachable moment..heartbreaking but educational. After having your mews broke into, did you do anything different to aid in securing it? i have debated webcams and such. I am paranoid of this very thing happening, so very curious to know if you did anything different? I would be very paranoid to leave my birds after something like that happened...Especially with such a traumatic ending.

Crazy story about the poor perigrine. It really bothers me when people's perverted compassion results in such bad consequences. Everyone involved thought they were doing what is best and it resulted in a terrible death for a majestic bird

Damn, that is so sad and messed up. Knowledge and facts totally could've stopped those misguided emotions. Have you done anything like a security cam to prevent similar occurences? Or would you recommend anything?

Reed Hill I have wanted to do security cameras. It is a wise investment. I know several falconers who have gone this route. It is a great idea

I was thinking something totally different when I saw the title. But it gave me an idea. You should make a video about falcon species in antiquity. Are there any mysterious ones. Like native American dogs they are in paintings but no one can find any today

Hello mammals ahahahahaha In Argentina you cannot imagine how hard it is to avoid wild falcons or other bids of prey that can chase yours. Better have it strong and very confident to come back. Good job Ben and keep doing what you do !

This is why zoos, rehab centres, falconry/bird centers etc can be such a mixed bag for me. Just like some individual falconers can do very ethically murky things, so can those establishments. Thankfully most don’t I think but it really does happen! They’re seen as infallible because of the air of professionalism and the trust the unknowing public assume they’re inherently worthy of, but often the profit motive makes things get tricky. I’ve seen places allow over handling/petting of clearly unhappy owls for example and I can’t help but think that an individual falconer working with a bird is actually straight up better in cases like that, even if they’re not an establishment. In places like those, even if a bird could be flown and it’s life would be enriched, if there’s no staff to do it and no money to be made doing it Vs keeping them always tethered or in an aviary then why would you? Profit always has the potential to make it get ugly fast!

Isn't it too easy to claim that free birds WITH Equipment, is not from falconers?
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 года назад
Well depends on how you look at it. By definition, hey Falconer is someone who is training and hunting with a bird of prey. Someone who is doing it illegally, would likely still call themselves of Falconer. But my point is that online I always see that the assumption is that a bird loose with equipment on it, is from a legal Falconer. I never EVER here anyone suggest that it might be from an illegally practicing falconer, a zoo, an aviary, or a falconer (legal or otherwise) from a different state or even country. There is a blatant “anti falconer” bias in America in this situation. Always. Yes legal falconers birds do sometimes take off and are not found, and often it is from circumstances like I outlined in my video. But the point of my video was to attempt to open people’s minds and try to break down some of the rampant bias. And I also have to report, that illegal falconry is also rampant. Not in any big scandalous way. Just there are countless people out there who find an injured or orphaned hawk or baby kestrel and think “wow this would make a nice pet!” They don’t know about the laws, read a few books on equipment, and keep the bird illegally for a few months (not knowing or caring that they are breaking the law) and then the bird takes off in them because they don’t know what they are doing. Are used to do falconry and wildlife education out reach programs all over the state. And at the end of almost every show, somebody either a teenager or an adult, would come up after and tell me their story. Of how a year or two ago they had a kestrel or a red tail and it took off on them. Their story was almost always identical. No permits, no knowledge of needing a permit, no sponsor, came across a fledgling red tail, kestrel or swainsons hawk, and lost it after a few months. And educators... the Hogle Zoo used to have a world Class flighted bird show run by Steve Chindgren. But of course they made him have the show in the summer. With extreme temperatures of heat, flight motivations are not as strong. And occasionally a bird would take off. This happened at the Tracy aviary as well. In these cases, the birds were always recovered. But sometimes it took a few hours. And if anyone snapped a photo of one of these birds wearing equipment and posted it online, again the assumption would be of a falconer losing their bird. It is just good to be open minded is all, and not always assume we know the full story when you find a bird out there with equipment. And since the bias is always “look! It’s a falconers bird!” Then in answer to your original question, I propose the opposite. Isn’t it too easy to claim that free birds With equipment ARE falconry birds? And because of that bias, isn’t it wiser to keep an open mind as to the many possibilities?

Your story is horrible. My biggest fear is that one of my falcon fall into the wrong hand. Education is the key
