This falconry video discusses the psychology of calling a bird using different methods. It discusses why from the birds perspective, names with fewer syllables are more easily recognized and are more effective for calling.

We in middle east or in arab falconry its important to name the bird and we always name them very short that can synchronize with the shouts we do when the preys flushed or calling them to the lure while training them and while even conditioning long luring as we pretty much train them mostly for tail chase, having said that names we call is from the time we have the bird the min we pick it from molt or from the seller and keep those names really short and keep shouting that name through the maiming process up until the season is finished and we let them acclimatise them so much with that name that even if they are full when they hear the name called the birds walk to us hooded you can see how bedoiuns shout the name in thier tents even during a big gatherings and each bird responds to it so well plus if some people have lots of Falcons they tend to use different calls and change in tone for different birds as most of them won't remember the names . I named my falcon hazzam and we have different varieties of names like shluwy zdhab hamri hamru are quit common ones and easy to get a synchrinized call with the names and it works so well just like how the birds react to the sound of a drone or RC plane sound when they in the field and keep flapping thier wings in hyper excitement

I had an imprint Cooper's that I flew a whole season and never named him. I just called him ass hole. I guess that is two syllables Ben ;)

I usually name my birds simple human names. The passage cooper's hawk I'm flying this season still doesn't have one. I'm leaning towards Alice cooper

My Harris hawk is called Woody, I call his name to follow on and whistle to return for food, he also knows the dog whistle is calling the dog and not him, two different pitches and a name he understands well. Clever creatures, it's an honour to communicate with a hawk.

I'm Trapping my first red tail soon, if it's a female the name is most likely going to be Brunhilde( Hilda for short) and if it's a male his name will most likely be Agnar (unless personality says otherwise of course)

I've named all three of my Red Tails, and plan on naming my further birds. They were named Talon, Hawkeye and Ruby. Mostly for me and other people haha. Great Video! How is the Ferruginous video coming along? I want to get one as my next bird and want to learn more about them. Training, especially for flying off the fist, trapping, habits etc.

There are parrot and dolphin species that have what appear to be names as we understand them. In several species of parrot, it appears that their parents "name" them in the nest and the offspring use those names- or slightly altered version of that name- through out their lives, and other birds in their flock use them as well to get that birds attention. Forpus sp. are one notable genus with some scientific study backing the idea of parrot parents "naming" their chicks. In dolphins, studies have suggested they use specific sounds as a "signature" to their calls, that other dolphins will also use to get the attention of that specific dolphin. It makes sense to me that "names" as we understand them would be most useful in highly intelligent, highly social species where getting the attention of an individual out of a group would be beneficial. I've worked with too many Grey parrots who named or renamed themselves, each other, and used their "human names" for each other, not to mention using the names of- or making up names for- their caretakers etc to believe that only humans understand the concept and use of names.

Bud. Every hawk gets the same name. It’s simple and I do the same with people who’s names I can’t remember. I use the name as my move forward signal. It seems to work well.

I use this idea when training my dog basing it off military D&C. Their name is the preparatory command catching their attention for the next follow-up command.

Hi Ben.. interesting video. Names have always been important to me for all my animals. Either something that fits them personality-wise or just something meaningful to me. I am certainly aware that from their perspective it is pretty much irrelevant, but none-the-less, I will use the name to get their attention and it usually works. I named my first Red-Tail after Michelle Pfeiffer's character in the movie LadyHawke, Isabeau. I would not be surprised to find out that it is common amongst falconers to use that name. However, I found it to be problematic in that no one knew what it was from and it caused way too much time in explanation, lol. My owl's names have had a theme of moons of the solar system. IO, Phoebe, and now Kale. Just for my own amusement, but so is falconry, so what's the harm? Obviously not everyone gives a hoot about the name they use or even give a name. But I do and that's just me. To each their own.. always love your content. Thanks so much! Cheers

Hi! Im no falconer but want to be someday. Heres a video idea based on a personal question. Birds in captivity can have long lives, so is it common to buy already trained birds, flying them a few seasons and selling them? Is it a very diferent expirience to have a bird some years than all life? Are they cheaper or more expensive if theyve had already an owner? I guess in countries were trapping is legal, its more frequent to trap and then let free than passing a bird owner to owner?

So do you think they understand cause and effect ? I’m not so sure classic behavior modification fits them.

To add something else to consider, early on (and still with many less serious trainers) handlers in the sport of dog agility would use the dog’s name as a cue to come in to me. As handling and lines have gotten more complex, we are starting to give specific names for certain types of turns or lines (aka expected behaviors). I am a dog trainer, not a falconer (yet), but I am wondering if it would be possible to apply your concept of naming to specific types of behavior. Such as a word for pay attention and another for a recall. I’m finding the more associations I can build with things, the better able I am to communicate. A related point is, we are finding that all dogs are not created equal in their ability to understand words and symbols. Some grasp them very quickly while others build relationships very slowly, if at all. One who develops associations slowly would mostly likely not be a good candidate for training to high levels in my sport. I would guess birds show differing levels of ability to understand conceptually as well. This ability is also something that can be improved on by selective breeding, which is definitely outside the scope of your video!

Here is another aspect of conceptuallization from the world of dog training that would also seem to apply to falconry. Generalization. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sm1AXSmaJLI.html
