In this falconry video I discuss the three principles that guide the proper socializing of a raptor. These principles should always be considered whether the bird is a falconry bird or an education bird, a passage, eyas, imprint, or any scenario.
In this video I reference the spiral and stomp technique shown here: • Falconry: Spiral and s...
I also share the flashlight training technique shown here: • Falconry: How to retri...

Man that training a red feathered hawk to hunt rabbits was a really informative and cool video! So interesting to see these predators so close to the handler

That owl looks like if it was a human it would be a DJ with how it wiggles. I love it and must befriend one immediately

Never been able to overcome Bagpipes. We are often at country shows and just remove Owls far away from Bagpipes. There are somethings you can't prepare an Owl for. Video is good and you explain things very well Ben. Spot on.

Ben, your videos are always the best. Cannot wait until retirement to become a falconer! These tips also work with parrots. I exposed my Amazon to everything I could think of, from different noises, flashing strobes, all the way to a jet helicopter. It takes an act of God to get Gonzo off my shoulder, especially outdoors. Thanks again!

I went through all the steps of socializing my passage RT, but he always hated people, no matter what I did. I wasn't really able to hunt with other falconers as a result. My sponsor and I just chalked it up to the bird being an individual that especially disliked socialization.

Love ❤️ this, Ben--ALL the training tips! Great info! Thanks for your knowledge, experience & insight. I have been working with a Red Tail for months, & I am racking my brain on why she, all of a sudden seems stressed. Wow, the pellet--funny 😅 your Barn Owl is awesome, does she have a name??

Do you treat a 1st year bird that you plan to release back into the wild after the hunting season the same as you would a bird that you plan to keep for life regarding manning and socializing?

I have heard a common suggestion indicating that tidbits be used during exposure training. Do you find this to always be necessary? Seems like a challenge to keep on track with daily calorie intake. Scenario: recall training in the morning using the daily amount of prepared food then simply going for a walk with the raptor tethered to your glove in the afternoon using no tidbits. Thoughts?

I'm interested in the answer as well because in film media you often see the actor who is handling a bird, in a fictional Falconry setting if you will, giving the animal tidbits while delivering lines with other actors. (As opposed to using it for an action sequence.) It seems like feeding a bird rather continually while it's exposed to others like that could also accidentally create a food association with other people that might not be healthy or safe.

Will a bird give a reflex response with their talons when startled? Like if a car horn goes on and your bird is on the fist is there a chance you get a talon in your hand?

Hi Ben, do you already have a video explaining the process of becoming a falconer in the US? I am from Wisconsin but live in Germany and became a falconer here with my husband (we have a young and fabulous Harris hawk). Although Germany makes nearly everything difficult with regulations and red tape, it sounds much harder to become a falconer in the US (though much more expensive in Germany)!

Hey Ben, I'm currently raising my first red tail hawk falconry bird. My family and I also have a bunch of unwanted puppy's and I've been wondering if I can use them as food for my bird. We can't find them homes and we don't really care. I asked my parents and they said it's OK with them and they don't really care about the dogs.

you would not be able to calculate the calories in the meat, please take them to an animal shelter, puppies are easy to adopt out
