Thirty years after England and Argentina went to war over the Falkland Islands, they're again making rival claims of sovereignty. England has deployed Prince William there to serve his first overseas military tour, a move the Argentine government calls a "provocation." Could another real war be around the corner?

Have you considered that the reason that the islanders have required assistance from the UK is because of the constant threat of invasion from Argentina? Not to mention the isolation tactics adopted by Buenos Aires aimed at damaging the Falkland economy? The Falkland Islands had always enjoyed a relatively self sufficient existence..until the invasion of 1982. I would also argue that these Islands only ever seem to be disputed when the Argentine government require a political distraction.

@fanagot I think you're missing the point that the Falklanders don't want to be Argentinan and wish to continue with the right determine their own future, in a similar way that the Australians did in 1901.

@fanagot If you read my post properly, you'll see that my point IS that Australia is no longer British, they declared independence in 1901. You might say they 'self-determined' their own future. My point is that we should be listening to the people who really matter in this dispute..the people of the Falkland Islands. As far as I can tell, they all want to remain British.

The point that you're missing is that the islanders have a right to determine who governs them. By invading in1982 and persuing a policy of isolation and bullying, the Argentine government is cynically trying to take away that right. How does the mention of Australia reinforce your point when Australia declared independence from Britain in 1901?

The people of the Falklands have as much right to be there as Australians in Australia. Wouldn't you think the Argies would go out of their way to be nice to the islanders? But no, they cannot because they were the same people who gave santauary to Nazi fugitives, And wasn't it Galtieri who butchered hundreds of young Argentine men? Let the islanders decide.

your response?.. a vague and muddled statement about colonialism and independence. I dont know why I should've expected anything else.

More diatribe about empire and colonialism? Shocking! You've still not managed to justify your position that the views of the people who live on those islands should be ignored. You've not even been able offer any evidence to support Argentinas claim over those islands. The next post will be your 11th. Why not suprise me?

So it seems to me that the problem you have with the Falklanders is that they originate from British as opposed to Spanish colonisers. You're arguing that unless they're 100% self sufficent they should be governed, against their will, by Argentina. You believe that they should only be free if they behave as a true South American state. Who exactly is acting like a colonial power here? I'm sorry but i've yet to hear any valid argument as to exactly why the islands ever were Argentinian territory.

ok..I think you're going around in circles here. You've posted on this page 7 times and have yet to justify your opinion that the views of the people who have lived on these islands for nearly 200 years should be ignored. You havn't even been able to offer up any evidence to support the Argentinian claim over the Falklands. All your argument seems to be based on is the droning repitition that the "colonialist british empire" was a very bad thing.
