Veterans have been sharing their memories of when the UK deployed a task force to the Falkland Islands 40 years ago.
In response to Argentina's invasion of the Falklands in April 1982, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ordered the deployment of a force including two aircraft carriers, more than 120 vessels and thousands of personnel.
It was the largest operation of its kind since the Second World War.

I believe I was around 9 during the Falklands War. I remember being glued to the TV. Not that strange for a UK child, but I was in Houston, TX. Probably more engaged than most of my fellow classmates. I think it might have to do with a letter I wrote when I was 6, in kindergarten. That letter was to the Queen herself. It was an assignment for class. I received a reply and was over the moon. My 83 year old mother still has that letter stored in a cedar chest. I’m so grateful for that memory and salute all who served. Brian S. HM1, USN, Ret.

Seems like Argentina just wanted their land back that was stolen by the British. But all the media made out like the British were in the right. Learning about colonialism changes how you view these conflicts: the imperialists trying to maintain their power over subjugated brown peoples.

When the liners arrived at the Gibraltar docks for refit before setting off to the Falkland Islands I was there serving in the Army. Work crews had boarded before the ships arrived. Stripped out as much as possible out of cabins. Before the ship was even secured in the dry dock. The volume of furniture just thrown over the railings onto netting that caught most of it before it hit the water. It was amazing the amount of locals who obtained large amounts of free high quality furniture in one day was astounding. To pull together the required forces and logistical support in the impossibly short timeframe available was a testament to the levels of professionalism and training of all involved.

God bless every British service member who served in this war. This was a badly needed turning point for the United Kingdom and its reascendancy to a place of self confidence and moral leadership upon the Earth from which we all derive such benefit. You managed to accomplish that which was nigh on impossible. We mourn those who gave their lives to see the right done. We grieve for those who were gravely wounded, both in body and in mind. We remember and respect to pay homage to the families of those lost and forever changed by their service, for all of this is your selfless gift to the nation and the world. Lest we forget.

I was born a year later. It's wild to me to think that men in their 30's back then are now in their 70's, even though I've been alive that whole time. It doesn't seem so long ago. Seems like they should have fought in WW2 or Vietnam. We always have to keep updating in our minds what 'old' means, because it keeps happening to new generations. lol

Amazing work. The key to any operation is the logistics. You can have boots on the ground, but without ammo, food, water, etc those boots won't last long. When I was serving in the RAF Logistics in the late 1980's, the other guys used to call us Blanket Stackers, etc. but to be honest Logistics is the lynchpin that keeps everything moving, without them everything stops. Just like the Russians are finding out now, with the Ukranians taking out the Russian supply convoys, as a priority target, as that bogs down the Russians, they simply can't move when out of fuel, ammo, etc.

To right and all mate. For the freedom of the people to have right to choose, and they chose to be British, why, because they are British, British South Atlanticans. 🇬🇧 Britain has many overseas territories across the globe, from The Falkland islands to South Georgia, as well as Crown Dependencies, all under the rules of law, British law. If one lives under British rule, things come with that, education, systems of governance, infrastructure, military protection, NATO protection as being part of the UK by definition means being part of NATO, Aid if needed, disaster relief, evacuation and early warning systems against different natural phenomenon, trade etc...etc....and the biggest of all, the right to come to the UK. 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I agree with you there 100%. My Father was born on St Helena, one of the British overseas Territories. He joined the Merchant Navy as a young lad and went on to serve in The North Atlantic Convoys in WW2 going up to Murmansk and Archangel in Russia. He was immensely proud to be British, as are all the islanders who still live on St Helena. He would not stand for any anti British attitude from anyone and I am sure that it is the same for any of our dependencies, it is their wish to remain British and while it is, they will be afforded all the protection and support that goes with it. What those men achieved in such a short space of time in The Falklands was nothing short of miraculous, they went there determined to do a job and to liberate and protect British citizens and they did it by sheer Guts, professionalism and determination.

A good part of the success that Great Britain had came down to munitions. If Argentine bombs exploded as intended or the country had acquired a larger supply of Exocet missiles the outcome of the conflict may have been much different.
@Bear10174
@Bear10174 2 года назад
Some of the bombs didn't go off because they were dropped from to low, so didn't arm correctly. The pilots were getting hammered with ground fire so they flew very low. Another story says that there was an MI6 operation that helped intercept sales of Exocets from France to Argentina but I'm not sure of the details or the truth of it.
@kutter_ttl6786
@kutter_ttl6786 2 года назад
@@Bear10174 The French were friends with the UK so as soon as the war started they stopped all exports of the AM39, The French even denying Peru from purchasing the Exocet because they were afraid they would pass them onto Argentina. What the British intel services did do after the war was pose as arms purchasers and outbid the Argentineans when they tried to purchase Exocets from alternative sources. They also, with the help of the French, identified other missiles out in the market and rendered them inoperable.

I think you will find the UK only just defended against Argentina and Argentina was supposedly an inferior military. The UK does not have the military strength they claim and they certainly do not have the strategy or military prowess to do something like Argentina again. The problem is, the propaganda you believe, that is the concern, this mentality you have in Britain that you are great and powerful etc. But your not, your flawed and a medium power at best. Your military is below that of France as an example. Frances military annual budget is quite a bit less than the UK, but they have a much more integrated military. That is one example of many I feel that kind of suggest you overrate yourselves in Britain and you believe it, what your media says, your Government, etc, thats the funny thing. Why are you so brainwashed in the UK?. Do you think that is a really cool thing to be, ignorant and brainwashed?. Be honest.

I've always been 50/50 on this as the island is right by Argentina and should be their island, but the population isn't Argentinian.
@Kizron_Kizronson
@Kizron_Kizronson 2 года назад
Except that historically the Islands were by right either British or French. France sold their rights to Spain. Making it either British of Spanish. Spain gave up their rights at a later date when their South American colonies started rebelling. This all happened before Argentina even existed. How can Argentina claim sovereignty over a set of island colonised by Britain before Argentina even existed? Mexico has a more legitimate right to Texas and California than Argentina does to the Falklands.

@@ThatCarGuy "the island is right by Argentina and should be their island" No, it shouldn't be theirs based on proximity. If you go by that logic, Poland has a right to claim Kaliningrad. Russia has a right to keep the islands they stole from Japan and are currently occupying illegally. Italy has a right to Malta. China has a right to Taiwan. and Israel has a right to their occupied territory's. The rights to an area of land are a combination of, primarily what the local population wants backed up by historical legal claims and rights. Proximity does not and should not even be a factor in this.

Are you Poms embarrassed by the Falklands, the way it was handled, undefended Naval forces, poorly fitted troopers, lack of strategic prowess and just plain typical British mentality on the battlefield which cost you. We saw this in WWII, the Light Brigade against the Russians etc, etc, your strategic prowess Britain is overrated because the calamities on the battlefield with you British is to be desired. The same applies to the Americans, poor strategy and overrating yourselves.
