Ciao Ana. Nice video. I see that your desert gardens are growing well, apart from some unavoidable small losses. Very good! Wish you have a mild and friendly winter for your beautiful plants and so many good things to you from northern Italy 🌵🌴
Thank you. Yes the gardens are pretty much survivors. Haha. They got through the hot summer months, now onto the freeze. 🥶 I hope your winter will be a cozy one, too! 😉
I am a cactus beginner and i've made the mistake of moving my cactus's to direct afternoon sunlight in summer from only bright light and they 90% all died! I was not aware that they are so sensitive to sun, in our collective minds it is taught to us by art, movies ect. that these plants just love to be in the sun 100% time, only when I've found your channel i realized their true nature and also what it means "too much love" because i wanted by moving them to make it better.
I know what you mean Divona. That was how I started out too, burned so many poor little green guys until I learned. When you look at them in habitat, the successful cacti do not grow in the harsh direct sun all day. They are shaded by boulders or other plants and only in the morning do they get direct sun. If they are not, they never make it. Go on a hike in the desert if you get a chance, you'll see.
Oh no. When moving them to full sun, do the change slowly. Get them slowly acclimated to being in full sun. Depending on your climate, they may or may not be able to handle full sun. Sometimes, experience is the best teacher. 😉 Good luck!
Such a wonderful set of cactus & plant gardens you have there, Ana, thanks for showing us over the usual relaxing cup of coffee!! Nice video update! Have a great weekend, greetings from my cactus greenhouse in Germany!
Hi Ana your garden is really nice! I think it would be great to do an opuntia fence on the back it would provide shade for the cacti on the frond and make it even more green🌵🍃
Your Cactus garden truly is so AWESOME Ana :-D you have a wonderful selection of cacti and succulents planted in your gardens and beautifully arranged too, the weather in Ireland has been crazy warm for October and it feels like Summer has come back haha, thanks so much for sharing the amazing updates on your gorgeous Desert Gardens with us Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and CACTUS POWER to Las Vegas for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Your garden is looking awesome, Ana 😊 It’s still pretty warm here for this time of year but it can change suddenly. Hope it stays like this, though. I lost a few plants during the hot summer, with so many plants we’re always bound to lose one or two. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and upcoming weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜☕️
Hi Ana, your garden looks amazing. The one by your husband's smoker is my favorite. The 2 palms makes it look like a desert oasis, lovely. I've learned so much from you and Lyn of Desert Plants of Avalon. From you I learned how to battle heat & sun here in Texas. I learned to use our Yaupon Holly tree to give my cactus dappled shade. Thanks for the post. Your fan, SolarWinds
I've been tying to clean up too. The work is never ending! Most everything is looking wonderful Ana. I had a couple causalities in this years heat too. It happens to us all. Thanks for sharing your beautiful cactus gardens with us!
Love that austrocylidropuntia subulata!!! That would make a great tree!!! Something I used in my rock garden in the dog yard is 4ft pieces of steel rebar. This is normally used for concrete reinforcement. I use these to hold up my Euphorbia evansii tree and Euphorbia milli tree. This keeps them from blowing down in a good ol Ozarks thunderstorm!!! Just hammer in a 4ft piece behind it like a steak. You won't notice it because it's so narrow. And it won't rot like wood steaks will. As it grows it will hide the whole thing!!! Glad you showed me the Echinocactus grusonii albispinus in the sun!!! I will keep mine in the greenhouse so the spines remain light in color. Yours in the sun looks kinda like a copper version!! Hahaha!! A copper barrel if you will!! You gardens look great!! Nice tidy up!! Wish we could grow more varieties outside!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful gardens and plants!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌺🌳🥀🌿🏵🌱🌹🌲🌸🌴🌷🪴🌻🌾🌼😃👍
You are right about woooden stakes not lasting. I will look for one that is made of steel. That’s funny about my Echinocereus being copper spines. I wonder if they will revert to being white if I put it in shade. 🤔
@@CactusCaffeine I bet the new spines would be white if put back in a more shaded position. But I don't think the older spines will change back. Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌳🥀🌿🏵🌱🌹🌲🌸🌴🌷🪴🌻🌾🌼😃👍
Again I am absolutely enjoying watching your gorgeous cactus plants , I love the way you organise by planted your cactus in one place , I love cactus plants but my only concern I do get allergic into my skin , so I can only collect the one not freckley ,
Ana I always love your videos. Been watching fir a couple years now. Remember watching the process of your 3rd garden from the start. Im so happy for you the success of it although some struggled and didn't make. Your challlanges are so different from mine in indiana. You are so devoted one of the reasons I always come back to you. Without writing a book I have a question. I watch other videos from cactus lovers in the same climate as me and they talk especially this time of year about dormancy. Saying stop all watering all together until spring. I took the advice and all my cacti suffered especially my oppuuntia. They all leaned over looked dead and when I started watering again they never returned to normal. I staked them and tied them like you would a tomato plant. I researched the Sonorous desert and it never said it DIDNT rain all winter so using common sense i decided to once a month give all my cacti and succulents a small drink of water, not soak them like summer months. Knowing I have to do my best to duplicate the normal habitat that's what I came up with. Hopefully I'm making the right decision. Do you have any opinion about my theory? If so please let me know its. I do trust what you think although everything doesn't work 100 percent. So if you can let me know what you think. Have a peaceful night.
I’m not sure how winter is in Indiana. But here in the Mojave desert, I have to water (slightly) selected cacti even during winter time. Our humidity is low even during winter. Prolonged dehydration causes some of my cacti to lose their roots. But be careful with some cacti like Eriosyce. They are very rot prone when they get wet during winter. I made a video about winter care and also why I water my cacti during winter. Check my videos when you get the chance. 🙂
I kept my Eve’s needle cactus in a small pot for 3 years to prevent it from growing fast. Once I planted it in the ground and got more sun, it just took off quick. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine mine is in the ground. It just doesn’t grow nearly that fast. And the pads are very small. I thought it was supposed to be small like that because its a baby Rita but yours is much bigger 😂
I enjoy your videos so much, I can hardly wait to see when you post a new one. Have you started moving. Some of your cacti to the greenhouse yet? My cacti stay outside, some in the ground but a lot are in pots. I moved all my succulents to the greenhouse a couple of days ago since night temps are going from 50 to mid 40s. My cacti I move under a covered patio to shelter them from the rain, rain which we seldom get anymore in the winter with the drought but one can hope.
No I have not moved anything to my greenhouse yet. Morning temperatures are still in the high 60’s/70s so I am delaying the move. But I’m going to have to start moving very soon.
Love your videos! Such a wealth of information. I learn something new every time I watch. I was wondering what the succulent is that is in the back area by your husband's bbq. It looks like some kind of yucca. love the color.
We rarely get frost as our weather is dry. But we get a hard freeze. (25-27F) Snow shows up sometimes for a couple of days or so but it doesn’t last very long.
@@CactusCaffeine They love hibiscus flowers too btw lol .... I wish I had a turtle... with over 40 typea of dragon fruit and a decently sized cacti collection otherwise... plus other stuff, I end up with soooo many trimmings 😅😅 I usually trash bad stuff and share the good ones with locals via FB groups or through my friend who has a plant "freebie" shelf she puts in front of her house lol
Hi my name is Pauline I have been growing cactuses but now the winter is coming on I had put in grow lights and trying to grow them indoors but I'm confused and how to water them I tried watering one of my succulents and it went soft I didn't put that much water I also tried to water one of my succulent cactuses and it just seemed to fall apart and get soft I know you're not supposed to water them in the winter but I'm not quite there yet it's only October 30th I could really use some help and advice I have some in terracotta pots and some in the original pots they came in please give me some advice how to handle them through the winter
Ana knows more than I do but cactus don't like Winter watering. The are dormant, maybe a little water if looking bad. I have no real Winter so I water a couple times in Winter
