Perennial profile: Royal Purple Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria)
Here I look at the fall foliage of the Royal Purple Smoke Tree. People it call it a tree or bush however, it is a perennial shrub. The foliage starts off darker purple early in the season, and then turns to a deep red with purple tint into the fall.
Height: 12-15 feet
Blooms: late spring into summer… Tender, thin panicles that resemble puffs of smoke
Sun exposure: prefers full sun (some varieties, like “Young Lady” seem to perform better with part sun/shade)
Hardiness zones: 4-8
