@@SouthernDirtGardener no problem yes it is very expensive but it may be worth the cost if you truly want those zucchini and squash My girl's love the chocolate chip zucchini bread and my daughter adores the regular zucchini bread show eat the whole loaf if you're not watching lol have a beautiful day
May be planting your spinach and beets too early. Im in 9b and they do well but I direct sow in october for beets and november for spinach. Also, spread phosphate and potassium (sometimes I use wood ash) in the soil and side dress halfway through for nice big health beets! Good luck!
I live in zone 9b and I also have trouble growing any kind of spinach. The only beet variety that grows well for me is the Chioggia (the one that has pink and white circles) and the Tender grey zucchini (I cover it with fleece to prevent caterpillars and hand pollinate it) I have heard great things about Alexandria zucchini but have not tried it yet. Good luck in your garden this fall.
Thanks for the tips I love self-pollinating. One of our friendly Gardner's commented and said we should probably wait till November to plant beets and spinach. So I'm going to wait on those two.
Also squash should be planted in spring time for 9b . it can handle the hot summer as long as its well watered . I have good luck with squash , pumpkin and melons
I have always planted squash in the fall and in the spring. As long as I can cover it in a frost it will be fine. Tell me your secrets about growing squash organically. My squash plants typically do better when planting in the fall over my spring because the pressure of bugs.
Squash and watermelon/ melon like a round trench around them . fill up the trench with water to water them try not to slash the plant or leaves . they also need Pollinators
Yes, I have grown that before in the summer and it does great! I now have longevity spinach that grows all year long but I really like. Thanks for the information!
Thank you!!! I'll make sure I find some to add to the area where I'm planting. Someone mentioned to wait till November.... I'm so thankful for tips from my subscribers!
@@SouthernDirtGardener I should have also added that you want to text your soil for boron deficiency before ever adding it to your soil. I think planting in November is probably what is needed to get your beets going. Happy gardening.
I feel ya and I'm no Master Gardener. I typically can grow a few squash before disease and bugs take over that's about it. I was able to successfully grow spaghetti squash and Seminole pumpkin. That's about it
Something always nibbles my sunflowers. Since yours are in the wide open, do you have any issues? When you do this videos can you separate the seeds you direct sow vs start in trays. Love watching your channel evolve!!! That chicken 😂
Thank you! Yes I do have trouble with birds and squirrels possibly deer rabbits eating my sunflowers tops. I feel like certain parts of the year I have more trouble than most. What I've learned is to plant enough for both our family to enjoy and the animals.
Here is my affiliate link to True Leaf Market type in the search bar "moneymaker" they have a lot of great seeds and supplies: www.trueleafmarket.com/?source=pepperjam&publisherId=260205&clickId=4462253465&PepperJam&
Do you need soil that says “for sowing” or can you sow in potting mix soil? I bought potting mix and regular soil for vegetables/flowers and mixed it 🥲
Yes if I'm direct sowing my seeds I will mix a little bit of soil used for sowing seeds or a sometimes called seed-starting soil. If I'm starting seeds in trays I only use the seed starting mix
For brassica, are you starting outdoors or indoors? I have an open side low tunnel under 50% shade cloth outdoors. I'm about an hour south of you just across the 10a line.
I would say kale is one of the top two things that produce through the entire year that we eat a lot of. I definitely wish I would have started growing kale many years ago. When I tried kale from the store it was disgusting only to find out kale is much better when freshly grown
Yes about 7 hours. I love my tower! I was watering every other day. All I do is fill my Reservoir to the Top Line and done. Its now set up on a timer drip daily that way I don't forget to water it, LOL.
@@SouthernDirtGardener If I sign up for your seed class, can my husband come just to watch and help me, or would he need to also purchase a ticket? Are you requiring masks?
That's a great question. Letting them go to see can take a long time. It depends on the plant and if I need the seeds or not. If I don't need seeds I rather give the space to replant.
Summer, I grow Kolribi spinach Oct - May and it’s amazing and delicious. I grow it in the Tower Garden. I think you would love it & you could teach others how to do it. I’ve had a hard time with traditional squashes too but have found that Korean zucchini grows very easily here in 9B. I’ll upload a video of it later today.
