19:20 You're right, but as anyone who played FFXI for a signifigant length of time can tell you, it can very much be a bad thing, too. There's a reason that one of the longest running memes in FFXI is, whenever someone asked "why can't we do this?" or "why can't the devs add this?", the first answer always given was "PS2 limitations." The game started on the PS2 in Japan, and while not that many NA or EU players played on PS2 (compared to PC or later consoles), in Japan they were a majority of the players, so the devs did not want to lose them.

The only place where Black Shroud still resembles the 1.0 hellscape we used to have to deal with is that little bit just before and to the east the Sanctum of the Twelve, in East Shroud. The tunnel does this little over/under thing, where over takes you to the church, and under takes you to a bridge. Imagine that, copy pasted dozens of times. And the Sylphlands are still super tunnelly.

Ooooo this is such a good series of videos! The noclip documentary is the other one that most everyone recommends, being the more “professional” I guess as they got to speak with the devs, versus this one where it’s from the view of people that were actually there to play it in real time

You don't see as many people react to the Speakers Network series, which is a shame because it has a ton of footage of the old game in one place and it's super interesting for that.

Oh snap. Someone actually acknowledging the Speakers of Hydaelyn. They really deserve it.

The Speakers Network videos are ALL very good. In their videos for the main cities you see how they changed the cities and they even had one which explains why certain QoL features have been missing previously (hint- PS2 had very little RAM). I think even the Shroud's crappy zones are explained in these videos - I think they just improved them a bit, but they are still a bit of a "maze" in some areas. I've been watching a lot of their videos and have come to the conclusion that YoshiP is correct - Nightmare. I think people want to see the story of 1.0, but there are ways for the devs to give them that without releasing a "classic" server. We have the echo after all and whole raid series are based on other FF titles.

Oh, I just started watching Speakers Network videos and listening to their podcast the past week or so, even though I've heard the name for a while. I love their Remnants of a Realm series, it's super interesting seeing all the 1.0 information Lukile talks about in-depth and how it compares to the presentation in ARR.

Ya, the lore hadn’t really been fleshed out at all in 1.X. The design of Ascian Prime from Heavensward is how Ascians looked in general, and there was almost nothing known about them-they almost exclusively focused on Garlemald. In terms of map design in Black Shroud, let’s just say that they did have a Z-axis…and no jump. So if you fell to a lower level, you had to go an hr out of your way to get back to where you were. If you even could.

One crazy thing they also made it so higher level mobs were at zone crossings. Making just trying to zone dangerous if you pulled them.

I think 1.0 was pretty good shortly before they shut the servers down. Certainly had more RPG elements than we have now. ☠️

Wierdly I kinda missed walking around the entire map without chocobo and jump ability from cities to cities just because its almost impossible to replenish aether in the beginning lol you literally need a friend to walk with just to chat around so you don't lose focus and get hit by lv 50++ enemies not to mention you must literally get on a ship to reach limsa from thanalan, and its not even instant teleport, you ride the ship for a nice 30min ish until you reach limsa XD until they finally add airship, and we also still need to wait for the airship to come in boarding area lol

9:45 the "planets" bit, iirc, ended up becoming expanded into the 13 Shards. The term "stars" became synonymous, and then used interchangeably, with planets, unless specifically speaking about Astrology or the actual stars in the sky. So, when characters or trailers say "This star," they're referring to the planet they are speaking of with the most immediate relevance to the current context.

The player characters looked better in 1.0 but had to be simplified for 2.0 for performance.

Think about how hard it is to get a 5.5 from IGN. They've given borderline unplayable games 8.5+.
