CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) loses his cool at Whammy Burger when informed that they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30 am.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

The genius behind Sheila being portrayed as the fed up fast food worker is that it adds to the already existing symbolism of dismantling the faulty system. But I think it is kind of weird for Sheila to have an apparent attraction to Foster as she is seen nursing her pen and having been enthralled by his behavior. I wonder if that was a scripted thing or a post production thing? Sheila must've seen Basic Instinct before D-Fens busted into the WhammyBurger.

When the manager comes through she watches the exchange between him and D-Fens like she is watching a tennis match.

Sheila makes this scene. If she was scared and terrified like the rest of the employees and customers, she would have just been another face in the crowd, but the fact that she seems to be loving the excitement, and has a rather sarcastic attitude and seems to be reveling in the confrontation between Rick and Bill, makes her performance the most interesting and amusing in this scene.

She absolutely does. During WW2 there was studies done that found that during intense firefights most people did not even fire their weapons - as fear/self preservation kicks in for most normal people - so they kept their heads down in the foxholes. They found that among the small minority - who were doing most of the firing - were a large number of psychopaths. So it was recommended that it would be beneficial to actually try and identify these people, and distribute them evenly over the infantry platoons - as they encouraged others to get up and fire. That's 'Sheila' here. Everyone is afraid but her - she is in her element 🙂

During my teens I was like that, I didn't shoot the ceiling, but I always looked scared and shy. People thought I was scared of them, they were very wrong. I was a black hole waiting to happen. It's amazing that when you can't control your anger, when you eventually lose it, you suck everyone around you into your problem. Some people explode immediately after an altercation, and people know to stay clear and avoid them. But a black hole gives them no chance, it's as if they are stuck in an event horizon. Thankfully I'm now more of a white dwarf nearing a black dwarf existence.

Fun fact: When this film was still an independent project, the script for this scene was much different from the one we got. Originally, when the manager denied him breakfast, and said "hey, I'm really sorry," Michael Douglas's character would have responded "hey, I'm really sorry too," and blown off the manager's head with a gun. In fact, the whole movie of Falling Down was originally intended to have more civilian casualties, and it was going to have Michael Douglas's character be far more homicidal.

Yeah, the burger loses a lot of thickness as it's grilled. The ones they photograph are almost completely raw, but they scorch the surface to make it appear to have been cooked. One time I tried a King Fish burger at BK, and when I got it I found out that it was 3 fish fingers in a bun. It was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace levels of disappointing.

She looked like she had the hots for him.I bet Sheila's a little freak who happens to work at a burger joint. Look at her expression when he pulls out that gun. He might as well have pulled it out of his pants.
