I review Falling Down, directed by Joel "bat-nipples" Schumacher. Ever have one of days. Not a bad day. A day. What happens if everything in your life went to hell? Would you be able to stand it? Or would you wind up Falling Down?

“I went into this expecting Bill to triumph. And now I’m afraid he will” has to be the best summation of the climax of this movie. Every other review tries to meditate on when is the exact moment Bill Foster became the antagonist, when the entire movie is trying to say that people are complicated. Most of the perceived good guys are extraordinary assholes. Many of the scenes where Bill harms or kills people isn’t only not held against him, but moments of relief and enjoyment for the viewer. Good people aren’t always good and bad people aren’t always bad. And in most cases IRL someone is perceived by their persona rather than their actions. It seems that, aside of Prendergast, no main character in this movie is meant to be entirely perceived as likable or dislikable. That’s why I think those exact words “I was expecting Bill to triumph, but now I’m afraid he will” makes so much sense

Funny, was just talking to my much-younger co-workers about this movie last week. I always liked how it portrayed the single-day downward spiral. Never had considered how Douglas's character may actually have been plotting the death of his family; interesting insight! Keep up the good work, and the humor! McDLT, indeed!

The worst day of work I ever had I compared to the first 10 minutes of this movie. I was driving home after and was pulling up to a yellow light. I stopped just as it turned red and the car behind me laid on the horn. Throughout the duration of the light he kept hitting his horn. I drove this tank of a Grand Marquis back then. He just kept going. I shut the car off, went to the trunk, and opened it. I guess he figured that was not a good sign and whipped into the next lane since the light had gone green. I had a sledge hammer in my trunk that I then picked up and brought back in with me. I'm glad he took off because I honestly didn't have a plan after retrieving the hammer. I didn't want to hurt anyone, just to stop the horn. That was a rough day. Twelve hours on the clock can make anyone's patience run thin.

Great movie, with a terrific performance by Douglas (maybe the best one he ever delivered). The scene with the neo nazi shopkeeper is especially poignant because Douglas is Jewish, so in real life he's a member of a minority himself.

Hi from your old stomping grounds here in the Philippines glad you are reviewing this film loved this film when I was young had a bit of a temper myself when I was young so yes I did sympathized with Douglas's character a lot to be honest still do just started seeing you're reviews and pretty good keep up the good work.

He is a great character and I am sympathetic for him through to the end. No one cares to help him and this world is no longer for him. He is a tragic figure. In another time period or in another country, things may have been better for him and his family.

I knew a one-year-behind high school and college Nerd who "got the brass ring" as an aeronautical engineer at a California high tech company in the early 1970's. Things were going great...until the high tech meltdown. He lost everything when that happened, plus he had a growing family to support. He relocated to Texas, in search of "Silicon Prairie" in the 1980's. The last I heard, he was putting a smile on his life at Home Depot. So, this movie has more impact now than then, but, like "The Swimmer," it cuts too close to reality. Oh, as for Robert Duvall's last-day-to-retirement-Cop reminds me of Dabney Coleman in "Short Time."

"You ever had one of those days..? Not a _bad_ day, but what the kids call *'A Day'?!!"* _Hell_ YES! When my Dad picked me up from the cinema to give me a lift after I’d gone to see 'Falling Down', in a _completely_ tone-deaf lack of 'reading the room' fashion, as it were, I proceeded to make the _totally_ calamitous decision to explain practically the _entire_ plot of this film to him on the journey home. When I finally shut up, I belatedly realised he had some news to impart...he’d been made redundant *that day* at work!🤦🏻‍♀️😳 Fortunately, he _didn’t_ go full 'D-FENS' violent rampage, & after several weeks of extremely stressful uncertainty, it actually turned out to be absolutely fantastic as he eventually opted to take early retirement with a pretty good pension! But I still _massively_ cringe at the memory of my utterly stupid insensitivity. Even so - in _my_ d-fens [!] - the coincidence of the situation was _pretty_ unbelievable...I mean, what were the chances of the scenario playing out _that_ way, on the *_very day_* I saw _THIS MOVIE?!!_ Edit: Needless to say, despite initially enjoying this film, I’ve avoided it like the plague ever since, due to the trauma of what unfolded afterwards. So cheers for this excellent review, thus giving me the opportunity to revisit Falling Down, & hopefully exorcise some embarrassingly awkward demons!☺️

There was never an "Edge". I saw it more as a curve. You could tell he changed along time ago and not in an instant. He slowly became this way over the course of his life.

I like that you appreciated his Streets of San Francisco days. I remember thinking it wasn't the same without him when Karl Malden's character got another partner. I'm gratified that Michael Douglas nominated this as his favourite role and movie he did. I agree with him.
