This video will teach you exactly where to fall and how the waves break when you are inside the barrel. I have tried to explain this as best I could and there may be some parts missing. Enjoy and I hope you learn a bit more from this video.

I’ve recently just got back into Bodyboarding thanks to my oldest son. Back in my teen days there was no RU-vid and everything I’ve learned was from experience. Just would like to say Thank you Ian for making such great tutorials because this sport is not like riding a bicycle and I do need professional reminders just because I’m older and a injury takes a bit longer to recover from. You’re doing a awesome job, Mahalo

As a sponger mostly surfing shorebreak these days, I really appreciate your insight. I've noticed for many years that I'd been getting spit out the back pretty consistently when I bailed on what I saw as the "flat" inside the barrel, but it turns out I've been laying onto the trough you mention here. Now that I know this, it's going to make it a lot easier for me to consciously plan bailing when I'm getting nommed by a tube. Thanks a ton Iain, your explanations in general are super enlightening, very easy to understand and super educational even for an experienced surfer like me (20 years of charging this year!). Big respect from Brittany!

Thanks so much for this tip. I've been bodysurfing at my local beach break the past few months getting some closeout 1-3ft barrels which has been tons of fun. I think I was kind of doing your method since the wipeouts weren't bad since the shockwave would kind of naturally pop me up and I'd land on my back near the trough. But now that I know to aim for the trough directly it should be even easier going forward. Super good high level tip, thanks a lot man. Love all your content

I guess it would be the same as the barrel, try land on your back and not your head or feet first. Also the less tense your body is, the better. Just got to let the wave do what it wants to you.

Hi Iain, thanks for explaining. Newbie bodyboarders here - having fun learning with my son. We’ve spent the last three days practicing at Boomer Beach. Question about falling out. When your rolling out in the trough on to your back, do you then let go of the board? We found trying to hang onto it, caused us to be dragged with the power of the wave. We’re loving the trill of the water, but have so much to learn 😀 Thanks
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 2 года назад
Hi Justin. Yes, let go for sure. If you hang on sometimes the wave can land on top of you and the board and pin you to the bottom which isn’t a fun experience. Good luck on your boogie adventure 🤙🏼🤙🏼

hi iain really Nice video. what is better when you r falling in a reef wave, drop the bodyboard and get into the "through" area or hold the buggy very very tightly and also get into the "through" area? thank for this videos, they've helped me a lot surfing in Arica -Chile. some day I'd like to surf Flopos, but at the moment I'm surfing Rancio, trying to ride middle or a big one. cheers !
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 2 года назад
Holding onto the board in the barrel can be a tough ask. Sometimes you can do it but the bigger the wave the bigger the beating and sometimes if you end up on your back and get pushed underwater it could maybe get you between the board and reef/sand, making it very uncomfortable for you. I prefer to let go and go from there.
@jackbleezus2918

Another banger from the man 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. Thank you Iain. Quick question (sorry if somebody already asked)... why land on your back instead of facing the bottom and do a regular dive?
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 года назад
I really can’t answer that correctly or have a good reason for it. I feel that landing on my back is just a momentum shift from the wave hitting my rail and sending me into a rolling sensation. Landing in that way just because that’s how the wave has thrown me.

Nice, Thanks. I would be interested in your technique on riding a high line for staying in tight almond-shapes barrels. Do you stall with leg to help wave pull you higher up the face. Or just turn your way up to a high line?
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 года назад
That’s quite technical but all comes down to legs and rail. Mid to high line surfing is really not my thing but when it needs to be done it’s all about controlling the rail and how the board sits in the water.

Hi Ian, Thanks a lot for the great information you supply us. You really help us a lot. This is pure passion. I have a question: I struggle a lot getting me on my board moving farward especially to the lineup with my fins no matter how strong and hard I paddle with my feet. If I wouldn't use my arms and shoulders to paddle and support my feet, I would barley get forward. It feels really bad then while seeing other bodyboarders speeding past me without even having to use the arms for support. I wonder if I have the wrong paddling technique or maybe wrong fins, I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I am 1,93 m tall.... I am confused because I am a quite good and fast swimmer. Sometimes I drop my board and swim instead to get quicker to the line up. Without my board I am way faster with fins and arms. I just don't get it. My duck diving technique is alright with board though. Have no problems with that. Best regards from the Netherlands (I surf in France in Portugal)
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 года назад
Hi there. So there are a number of things that could be wrong. Your technique when you paddle, your legs staying submerged and in the water or maybe it’s the size of your board. Because you’re so tall you need either a board that is bigger to give you more buoyancy or you may just need to increase the amount of foam. Without seeing any pictures or video there is nothing else I can suggest to you. Remember to stay centred on your board so you can be in the best position when you’re out in the water. I hope this helps and give you some sort of insight.

In my area, I'm riding very tight closeout barrel. In this case, it's hard to go inside the barrel and it's instead easy to end up under the lip. I have many questions: 1. When you fall into the trough, can you accidentally slip and fall under the lip 2. Do you recommend covering your head if things go wrong 3. Should I find a bigger wave to practice this technique 4. If I go to Sandy Beach in Oahu, does this technique work
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 11 месяцев назад
1. Most of the time, falling in the trough should push you straight under the wave and avoid the lip. 2. Yes, always cover your head. 3. Sure, if you can. 4. It should work but be careful as sometimes that wave goes dry inside the barrel. Dangerous place to surf so be safe out there.

Digging all these vids and info Iain! So rad to see quality content for boogers! For a weekend warrior like myself, do you rate there is a massive difference between a 42" (which I normally to ride) and a 41,5" (which I just got as there was no 42")? Thanks again! 🤙
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 года назад
Hi bru. I personally can feel a big difference as I am used to riding 42 and I order a 41.75 and could feel it immediately. For the average person, a .5 inch difference might feel a slight difference in buoyancy but no it’s not going to make a huge difference.
@danonthespot

Hey Ian thanks for the vid, are you saying if you are catching a right hand wave, in the barrel, and it closes out, then you roll over to your left (towards the lip breaking) onto your back ?

You can also just keep riding the wave till the very end when its lost most of it's energy. ANd not worry about jumping into it or going back first. This is a good video in my opinion if you have accidently let go of your board. Or have a habit of doing this.
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 года назад
It’s not an accident. It’s the wave and the shockwave in particular that bucks you off. Holding onto your board through that process can result in you lying on the bottom with the board between you and the surface getting pounded.

@elliothuh669
@elliothuh669 Год назад
@@therehere4799 Holding unto the board serves two purposes getting a sick long ride and it provides buoyancy. But you also have to put forward pressure on the board and go down the line. Letting go of the board is fine too if that is what works. This probably works fine except for maybe on a heavy shorebound.

Hello Iain !! Thanks for the video , the thing that most pushes me back from improving in BB and scares me most from trying hitting the lips and trying manoeuvres is the fear of being trapped for a long time under the wave, please give more tips on how to scape from foam when you fail a manoeuvre or a wave hits you , greetings from spain 🙌😊

Does a hawaiin pull out work on these big shorebreak and reefbreak waves. Or should i just stick to this. I have been riding for a year and I would say I have the technique down and I can even do tricks. I'm just to scared to go into a barrel and not break my neck. Any more advice?

Don’t know if it’s worth making a video because it’s simple, use spit. Spit on the lens and rub it with your tongue and then keep doing that throughout your surf. It’s what water photographers do and works wonders.

Yes,indeed. I take care and never try to catch something really crazy. I like shorebreaks cause you can catch many waves. During winter water is like 9-11°C here so you don t have to wait a lot for waves and you can catch many waves in short time

This might be a really stupid question but I am an overthinker so meh :D When do you decide to fall instead of trying to continue to ride it? In the 1st and 2nd clip I can see the whole wave is breaking at once basically, so there's no way to really finish the wave. But is it better to rather fall of early than to try and stay until it collapses? I will soon be having fun at dappat se gat with all this. I love a challenge! Hope you are having fun in Hawaii :D

You spoke if I understood of the trough as being a safe falling place. Isn't this the impact zone?! I'm a little confused about this. Please clarify. I'd love to be a master of safety above all other things. I'm in the waves it a LOT these days. Xo

No, the impact zone is where the lip hits the surface of the water. The trough is what happens thereafter.
