I built a shelter in a beautiful area on a frozen lake with the temperature going down to -15c/ 5f overnight. Unfortunately I made a mistake that changed the course of the trip.
"That might be a trip ender." *Falls in more* "That's a trip ender." Sorry, I couldn't help but chuckle at that one. Looks like both you and Xander have learned that lesson the hard way. Glad you're alright. If I make it through life without falling in myself, your sacrifices won't be in vain 😅. Merry Christmas!
Haha yup you could see the wheels turning in my head as I fell in and then fell in deeper. Learnign from other peoples mistakes is the best way to do it - glad I could help haha. Merry Christmas and Happy NEw Year!
Yikes!!! Scary lesson. Nicely done video none the less. Love the scene of the snowflakes reflecting sunlight-didn't know they glowed in different colors-very Chrismassy. Cheers.
Yikes! Being wet in below freezing temperatures is always an uneasy feeling.🥶☃️ Glad your ok! The rest of this adventure looked lovely. Thanks for sharing Maxim🙏
Glad I found you from your US adventure with Xander. You guys do an award winning job with the cinematography. Blows my mind the quality you’re able to put together vs professionally produced videos. I prefer yours.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm flattered you prefer my videos, though I have to say I was very lucky to have Xander start making videos before me - I learned a lot! Cheers and thanks again!
Thanks Shawn! It the perfect learning experience - something I can remember whenever I'm in a situation with potential for greater consequences. Cheers!
Funny to see the Stein Eriksen Sport on your hat 🙂. One of the great Norwegian skiers back in the days! Nice trip there , Maxim, and lessions learned. Greetings from Norway!
I always liked that musical whooping noise the ice would make, has to be really thick ice, I think it was from the ice pressing up against itself somehow. Noticed it at night but probably happened whenever.
Yeah it's got to be one of the coolest sounds! You ever see people skating on thin ice? It's a sport done in part for the sounds - like lasers in movies. Different from the sound of ice shifting in the night, but also incredibly cool. Thanks for watching, Moe! Merry Christmas!
Thanks for sharing that misfortune of going through the ice. It has to be the most terrible and helpless feeling. My son and I were snowshoeing near a lake in northern MN and that same thing happened to a couple crossing a lake. They also could safely return to their vehicle which was somewhat nearby. We saw them upon our return as they were parked near our own vehicle. It was a lesson that WE learned through their mishap. We always carried those hooks to pull us up and onto the ice should it ever happen to us. We enjoy both your videos as well as those of Xander and realize the cold winter camping experience through them. Thank you.
It's definitely one of the scariest things imaginable - though in this case it wasn't too dangerous and my greatest fears were inconvenience and having to end my trip. Still a great lesson to remember when stakes are higher on deeper water. THanks for watching, Jerry! And Merry Christmas!
Maxim: I’m always impressed by the vision, artistry and genius of your nature shots. Sorry, but I sometimes use them to show the beauty of nature in the wild. Thanks for your innate creativity. Thanks for your
Glad that you are ok and safe, Hopefully if i can say that, this experience did not arrive in a situation with deeper water, cooler temperature and much more ground to cover until your car. Mery Christmas to you and family.
It's less shocking in these circumstances where I know the water is shallow and stakes are low, but still quite the feeling! Thanks for stopping by, Adam! Merry Christmas!
I ages to more years to my already 75 years when you fell. So happy you are okay. Love your great videos and how awesome your beautiful wife is. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
Oh, that water must have been shockingly cold! Good to know it only changed your plan for the day. I love the eye you have for the beauty around you, always a pleasure.
When two Budnicks do uploads, it's the best day! Much love and respect for the most honest and cutest outdoors brothers out there! Stay safe and merry Christmas in the coldest time in years. 🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing your experience falling through the ice. Situations like that can be really humbling but we can all learn from what you went through. Glad you were able to get back out a few days later and have an enjoyable experience. Really enjoying your bushcraft shelters!
I agree! If I were far from the car, I would have been able to. stay warm in spare clothes and dry my gear over a large fire - but it would have been very hard on my clothes - this kind of drying tends to create lots of little holes in fabric from the sparks. Cheers, Marc - and Happy New Year!
Amazing video , love the camera work! A suggestion for the next one, keep the sparking / lighting of the fire part in. This fire making sequence when you shot seems like I was robbed of the climax. Hoping for more such content from you , cheers!
Hello Onkar. Thanks for the suggestion on lighting the fire. I usually try to include it, but sometimes I do not get a good video. Thank you for watching and commenting. Wishing you a happy 2023!
Watched this one with my folks. I love your videos very much. This one I really thought was great. You let us in on what can also go wrong and shared this experience. Sure glad you weren’t too far from your car and that the water wasn’t much deeper. Our hearts sank watching you ho through the ice. Thanks for being so open and sharing that experience.
Ooof.. Im happy you're not hurt. Thanks for the truth. Well done video, top notch cinematography. Need bacon now🥓😁.. Again.. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Look forward to upcoming videos. Closing on 10k subs.. Look forward in 100k subs for you!
Thanks for the encouragement as usual, Gilles. I've appreciated all you nice comments this year. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your family!
I fell through the ice today!!! I was scouting a winter camping spot just outside of Ottawa. It was a perfect spot to film my Video. I was hiking through the woods when I crossed a frozen creek, I made it across fine but on the way back the ice cracked (that's the worst sounds) and I went in! Luckily for me it was just a foot deep. Glad you were ok.
Thank you, Richard! It takes a lot of time and fiddling to get the shots, but it's just the kind of work I enjoy doing :) Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment - Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas Max, your clips are getting much better. Looking forward for more!I love how You keep building shelter please keep that style of building and bushcraft. I think reason for Xander success is that he kept his style.. and he eat hamburger with maple syrup 🤣... Cheers ❤️
imo this is. one of best videos to date.super at ease and very believable ..v.ery entertaining and the pace of events is so natural , you have found your place, excited to see more...
Wow, great night time photography, and shots of the ice in the streams. The fall through the ice was still dramatic even though it was shallow as one could tell how cold it was out there.
It was pretty spicy! But glad it happened and I learned from it. Thanks for the feedback - glad to hear you enjoyed the night and ice shots. Thanks for watching, Jason! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Wow glad you are ok max and were relatively close to your car if you were not experienced in this kind of situation it could be life or death the main thing is you kept moving and got back to your car defo shows we have all got to expect the unexpected wherever we are thanks for sharing and you got back out to enjoy your camp awesome video with great photography stay safe and well all the best for 2023 🔥🔥❤️👍
Harder way would have been deeper water though - so I consider myself lucky. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Out of curiosity - are you really looking for evidence of Sasquatch? Happy New Year!
Hello max! I'm so glad that it ended safely. Our lives are a series of unexpected events. But life goes on and on. Winter is harsh, but it makes humans strong.:) Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Probably my favorite of your videos, thank you Max. Beautiful scenery - the nighttime sky was absolutely breathtaking. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Thanks Brandon. Its so important to have these experiences and learn from mistakes - so in more dangerous situations you have an awareness of what could happen. Cheers and thank you for leaving a comment. Happy New Year to you and your family!
@@maximbudnick trust me I’ve had my fare share of experiences. Not overly religious but can’t help but feel god is testing us, making sure this truly what we want, this life of adventure. Here’s to safe but challenging adventures in 2023!
Thank you for showing this Max. That looked terrifying to me inly because i have reynauds syndrome so i took a deep breath when you went in. Some friends of mine and I were campin about a half mile in on a trailhead in January in New England and i we to check out my buddys tent and my snowshoe went through the snow near where his tent was and got stuck in a spruce trap and I couldn’t get my leg back. I started to panic and as i was starting to freak out my entire boot started to completely fill with water. I eventually got my snowshoe and thus leg back but the temps were single digits the whole weekend. Needless to say we survived, i had a second pair of columbias in the truck for winter so i was fine. That stuff is scary, no where near as scary as your deal, but yikes!! Take care man! NQU
Hi NQU! Cold weather is nothing to mess around with thats for sure! Always need to have a plan for when things go wrong. Thanks for sharing. Merry CHristmas to you and your family!
I remember the first time I heard the ice expanding at night. It was back in the 90's. After I figured out what it was, it was nice to hear..... I've been lucky in that I've never had a serious accident when out alone. Glad you made the right choice and that it only delayed your trip.
Man, so glad that didn't turn out alot worse and you are ok. That night sky was amazing and beautiful. Nice capture. Stay safe out there Max, your viewers would like to see many more videos from you. Take care my friend.
Awesome spot, that nice rock point for easy water access. Great thinking on that shot at 6:26, looking like a lake in the middle of winter....if that was your intention. And nice tip on marking that big log .....never thought of that, I don't take an axe but could be done with saw too I guess. Since water is a game changer in winter...waders?
Nah I think the important thing is to just not fall in. If I were not so close to the car I could have sorted the situation out by building a fire - it would just have been very very hard on my gear, and taken a big chunk of my trip. Thanks for watching, Brent. Merry Christmas!
That was a cold swim, I know I push my luck when the consequences of failure are not very extreme. You were smart to call that trip off. Another great film and adventure. Thanks for taking us along and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Glad you're safe Max loved the video, A couple of years ago I went to a spot where I was hoping to see the northern lights and it was my very first winter trip I had 0 experience and I didn't even know that they had trail markings so I just started hiking and I was looking for a spot that was near a lake but also close to a cover and saw a bunch of trees and some grass started going towards it not realizing I was walking on a pond and bam I went straight through and just like you said in your video my buckle was on and it was so hard to swim I was waist in it was a nightmare to get out, I also went around 2 pm and it got dark around 5 so I decided to stay the night I did not feel cold maybe because of the adrenaline and I had 0 idea how to make a fire so I just put my tent up rolled out my pad and sleeping bag took off my clothes and hopped in in hopes to let my clothes dry out which was another fatal mistake because it was now around 7pm pitch dark and I did not follow any trails and was freezing my ass off so I decided to pack up and try to find my way back and started to panic luckily I saw my footprints and followed them to where I fell but this time used what ever common sense I had to walk around and got to the car safely. P.S It was the cloudiest day ever so I didn't get to see the northern lights but I did come to a warm house
Wow that sounds like quite the experience and you got a lot of lessons out of one single trip. That warm house must have felt incredible to come home to haha
Great video! Thank God you kept your cool when you fell in 🙏🏻 lesson learned, great reminder of the dangers! Happy Holidays to you and yours, looking forward to the new year of your adventures 👍🏻
Yeah I was pretty confident it wasn't dangerously deep - but certainly deeper than I expected. The shock was mainly the instant realisation of all the extra work I just created for myself haha. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. All the best and happy new year to you and your family!
Maxim, great video; loved the shots of the water flow off the ice, your artistic side was dominating in this video. Thank you! Can’t think of @ better way to pass a Christmas night than watching your videos. Merry Christmas
Awesome vid !! Most people seem to think that it's predatory animals you need to fear in the wilderness but as your experience showed there are many more things to be careful of and respect when out and about. Thanks for sharing ( :
Oh yeah animals are barely a consideration regarding safety, but the weather is constantly on my mind in all seasons. Cheers and hope you have a great New Years :)
Eeep! I fell onto the pool once and went right through the ice, completely submerged. Fortunately, I was able to be in the house and out of my wet clothes within a minute or so. The trek back to your car in wet clothes must have been a bit uncomfortable. Hope you were able to change into something dry once you got there. Life's little lessons... ;)
so Max...i guess i have a problem now - after discovering your channel its hard to say which i like more....yours or Xander's 😉 i really have to say watching your films is real pleasure. ps-all these moments of morning mist colorful sunrises etc really do the job...
Love how you remained calm after falling through the ice. Great Video. Just wondering if you would've put the pack back in the toboggan you would've fell through. You walked across a few time no problem but the the last time you had more weight on body, not sure what your pack weighs in at. Dont know. Regardless glad your got through the unscathed. Great video and happy holidays to you and your Wife. Love your channel.
I think you're right to think that without the backpack I would probably have made it across, but most importantly I should have just taken the longer route this time of year. Happy holidays to you as well, Darrell!
Wow buddy! So happy you're alright...yes lesson learned, accidents can happen fast, but what you are sharing can really mitigate the risk for others by your experience and advice to what you learned. Still, you pulled off some beautiful camera work with the night skies and the snowy woods. Have a Happy Safe New Year to you and yours!
Some people might question why you tested the lake and fell in, but I for one, think this is a great video and how things happen in life. I am glad you could get back to the car, change your gear and the heater in the car! I really enjoyed this video. I love watching Winter Survival video's and there are a lot of other youtubers who would not have shared the footage and the realistic events that can happen. Much Love from Australia. I think the lowest temp I have been in was -9 Degrees Celsius and - 42 Degrees Celsius, But I was working at a Ice Cream factory. We were not allowed in the -9 for more than 30 minutes and the -42 Snap Freeze for more than 2 minutes. We don't get much lower than -5 in most parts of Australia though. (Can be lower in the Ski/Snowboard destinations though During winter).
Oh yeah I even questioned myself as I did it - but I agree it's important to show mistakes. -42 is a pretty cold - kind of weather where you really start worrying about anything that could go wrong when your outside for even a couple of hours. How did it feel?
Your channel is taking off! Well deserved. Sorry about the "trip ender" but lesson learned 🥶 and all's well that ends well. Happy Xmas to you and yours. 💚🎄❤
Great video Max....having lived most of my life in NH I know the dangers of thin ice or that looks safe and isn't...I don't have to ask you but I would always ask my students after a scary experience two questions: 1. Did you learn from this experience and 2: where did steps 1, 2, and3 (12 steps of AA) not enter into your thinking...in your case you explained how you learned...again great video...keep them coming...by the way our hearts skipped a beat when the ice broke....don't tell zander but my wife likes you better...
Hey Ronald thanks for sharing - and you sound like a great teacher. It was definitely a great learning moment and I'm lucky to have have it in a situation that wasn't particularly dangerous. Thanks a lot for stopping by and leaving a comment. Wishing you and your wife a very happy New Year!
Feliz Navidad Merry Christmas 🎄🎉 Life can only be lived through experiences 👍🏻 Its all good 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you are a bolder👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼amazing video, I was waiting for this 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’m glad that you were okay. That can be a fatal experience; a very unpleasant way to die. But your time isn’t up. The Almighty has more adventures in store for you! 👍
