I missed this game and I'm really happy that the makers of this game became the memembers of obsidian that made the new fallout new vegas. They mixed new with old and turned out to be amazing.

@flameybadger Most definitely. I played 1 & 2 relatively recently and they're excellent. Note for 2, there's a patch floating around which restores a lot of cut content from the game. Not that the release version isn't super on it's own, mind.

I think I played a game once that had a very similar engine to this, but you instead commanded a bunch of mercenaries sent to some god damned hell hole in south America and the game itself was harder than all the nine circles of hell.

Diablo is a hack and slash, action rpg. The only aspect of the character you are involved with is combat capability. Player interaction with the game world, storyline and npcs is strictly linear and 99.9% of the time involves woop-ass. Fallout is a "hard-core rpg. Player interaction with the story is diverse and multilinear and heavily influences the game world. "Kick in the door" gameplay is effective but hardly mandatory. Action RPGs and Hard-core RPGs are in my opinion very different genres.

No, only on PC. But I believe Tactics and BoS are on PS2 and Xbox, which Tactics has the isometric view from the first two games, although it's pretty linear..

You get the dialogue when you 'accidentally' connect with the Enclave at Poseidon Oil number 5, when you're replacing the Hydro-electric Magnetosphere Regulator. You need a pretty high Science skill, if memory serves. Not sure if the Enclave shows up though, but I'm guessing they don't.

LOL I loved this part. I kept a save for this just so I could try different speech paths and watch his reaction. And yes, the Enclave soldiers DO come, but not to Gecko. They appear in the vicinity around Gecko on the world map. I killed them and took their weapons.

so much arguments about fallout 3. Maybe this is a bad comment or either a good one but i don't really care. Fallout 3 is so much diffrent than fallout 2 but fallout 2 gets kinda boring when you play it 2 months (i actually did it) In fallout 3 you can walk trough the wasteland and do other things what is more fun. But idd they had to do some better conversations in fallout 3. But further fallout 3 is a good game. (not perfect) i gaved it a 8/10.

gotta say...Fallout 3 was badass!!!..but it didnt really have nonething to do with the series.i mean fallout 1,2,van buren ALL took place on the west coast right?? well fallout 3 obviously took place on the east coast BUT one thing i did enjoy is that in fallout new vegas theres is no enclave :( BUT there is the "remenants" bunker which contains the old enclave armor and a vertibird!!!

@purpleprinc3 I agree with you about Fallout 3 being "dumbed down" in comparison to 1 and 2. Thankfully, being die hard PC gamer, I (along with many others) have access to many mods that make the F3 experience much more challening and interseting (just check out falloutnexus and you'll see what I mean). Thats why I've always looked at Fallout 3 (and Oblivion) as a literal sandbox - a wide open world with some basic starter quests and ideas - which the mod public then brilliantly expands upon.

@CommanderCody9986 Indeed, Fallout 1/2 was better at almost everything except combat. Jesus christ is it repetitive, after about 10 hours of playing I want to poke my eyes out with a spoon, luckily I do not have to do that anymore because of some kind of speedhack that makes the game run two times faster. Another thing that Fallout 3 lacked was the specific atmosphere of palpable despair and hopelessness. It's still there but not anywhere as good.

@grineti5 Yes, Bethesda did a good job. No denying that...anyone that does, simply has no taste for gaming beyond a certain point. But Obsidian had nothing to do with Fallout 1 and 2...it was Interplay, and one of their branch companies called BlackIsle...which was pretty much dedicated to all things Fallout. They were working on Fallout 3 when they went belly-up and Titus Interactive bought them out, and liquidated them. But Fallout 1 and 2 were WAY better than Fallout 3, sorry to say.

@SkinsFTW Fallout 3 was a good game...hell, I DARE say a GREAT game...but I will also say this: It was NOT Fallout. Designed around the same post-nuclear world. Designed to follow the some of the old ideas of the originals. And like I said...I dare say a GREAT game...but it was NOT Fallout. Really get into Fallout 1 and 2...get into their stories, get into the game play...then look at Fallout 3...you'll see it too. Unless you're not a good enough gamer to see when something is missing.

Nothing beats Fallout 1 & 2, I mean where else can you arm wrestle a mutant and if you lose you become his gimp for a night, or poison the oxygen supply of a mafia boss, or plant dynamite in his pants, or philosophically convince an enclave scientist what he is doing is wrong and get him to kill all his colleagues, or talk with a deathclaw and dicuss life. Feels like Fallout 3 was dumbed down and whilst it may be violent, it was not as graphic as Fallout 1 & 2 content wise.

@ancalimonungol Please define "Better"! How you like or dislike a game depends on your own personal view. Wait a few more years and ppl will say fallout 3 is old and not good. Same as they do with fallout 1 and 2. I hovwever think that 1 and 3 are very good. Fallout 1 was a bit more darker and mystic, but i think that bethesda did a great job in creating the same athmosphere in fallout 3.

@DavidEasthope True, but at the cost of a great reduction in the quality of dialogue, and let's face it, the storyline was just a mish-mash mix of the previous storylines. I never figured why they needed the GECK in Fallout 3. I mean, it's just a portable generator along with some seed samples, a holo-library and a pen-flashlight. WHY did they need that to purify water?! But, I digress. Fallout 3 was a step in the right direction... but Bethesda stumbled a bit, in my opinion.

I don't understand the animosity against FO3. I played FO1 when it was new, and logged more than a hundred hours on it. Same for FO2, and again now with FO3. It's a different presentation format, certainly (1st person), but for once the Wasteland looks real. It's great. If anything, FO2 was the furthest from the original idea: futuristic firearms and modernized sci-fi ideas. FO3 went back to basics with the lovable 50's futurism style.

@limafilho27 : This is called a turn based game. It is not a frozen game. To freeze a game game you need a Multi Ice or ActionReplay cartridge, then you can edit and or cheat a game. Some of the best games ever made are actually turn based. Like Civilization, UFO Enemy Unknown (or XCOM UFO Defence), Fallout1&2... Back than it was not about who clicked faster but about planning, using your wits and intelligence You should all know that playing too much FPS games kills your young brain cells.

and they didnt even try to distort the voice to add a little more variety in they voice let alone enthusiasm final line the dialogue in in fallout 3 was a slightly major disappointment because we thought the dialogue was going to top and kick the shit out of the second but it didnt. there shuold be a mod to replace some of the repeated voices in the third fallout from the first and second theres alot of things missing to make fallout3 better than fallout2 so i think the second is better than the

The people in fallout 3 were very un-enhtusiastic i played fallout 2 when i was little then i lost it then after the news for fallout 3 coming out got me all giddy and i had to wait like 2 years before i convinced my uncle to let me have it since my dad woulnd let me buy it i thing the dialogue in the 2 was way more fresh and the were tones to like almost each character in the second it was easy to say wasnt he the voice of butch too? thaey needed more voice actors

You don't even know who are the creators of the first two games , I don't think you're in a possition to know what they were doing or planning to do. On the contrary if it wasn't for the original creators of the franchise those reatrds at Bethesda wouldn't be working on Fallout 3 and their bazillion DLCs right now, they lack the creativity to come up with something like this, Fallout 3 stands as proof.

And y'know what? Bethesda outbided the original designers in the purchased of the Fallout liscence and they REFUSED to hire them as consultant or otherwise. Yet they bragged about being FANS. They don't care. There was no effort made to remain faithful to the first game and that pissed a lot of people. Fallout was something unique. The problem isn't difference, the problem is a lack of coherence, a lack of attention to the little things that made Fallout special.

You know why there's bitching about F3? Because there's been bitching about anything related to Fallout since the first game. Why? Because Interplay screwed up F2 development and everything afterwards. The designers left the company and those who replaced them made mistakes and they recognized that themselves. It was even worse for Tactics. I'm not even talking about the console game.

Unfortunately it's not so much the game company, Bethesda, as it is society today. Everyone has to be politically correct now or they catch a ton of flak and risk getting their game pulled. With the US in the economy these days the way it is - nobody can risk that. Let's just be glad they released the G.E.C.K. and we've got a great modding community for FO3 to make up for what Bethesda sadly were not aloud to put in.

While that's still negotiable and up to the persons themselves to decide, I disagree. Perhaps you didn't enjoy the story much, but the majority sure did. I also enjoyed the gameplay, but the story was what drew me and many of my friends into the genre. For me, fallout 3 was nothing but ES4, with GUNS, trying to be a fps. The stories of fallout 1-2 are good because they let you make an impact! Yay, you destroyed the slaves in F3, so what? the ending makes no mention of it. Fallout 1-2 otoh...

AT least in the old games when you walk in to a vaut you need to start up the generators (usyaly fix them).In fallot 3 it abandoned garages,ofice bildings there a lot of pc who still work, power is on, there is atable 200 years old food and so on !People in the Wastland do not do enything to survive (unlike f2) instead they do things like wasting caps on cola colections,saving runaway robots and so on....Where is the element of surviving.The after war population is actialy not in bad shape...

Well of course, change is an integral part of all games, it's just that RADICAL change isn't always a change for the better. I mean, let's say Bungie introduced pink super bunnies into the plot of Halo; Super bunnies are extremely powerful, and they wish to control the universe so they can create a super-carrot. Bungie can RIGHTFULLY say that this is now part of the plot, but it still SUCKS! That is kind of the way I feel; Radical change that destroyed much of a potentially awesome game.

I agree with szenhidrat. Fallout 3 wasn't a BAD game, so to speak, but it brutally slaughtered the former fallout feeling. If you haven't played 1 or 2, you wouldn't even feel the change (of course), but in fallout 3 it feels like the war ended 3 days ago, whilst in Fallout 1+2 it's more about rebuilding humanity, maintaining agriculture, finding ways to produce energy and so on. Fallout 3 just didn't have that wasteland feel. Whenever you feel you're done, WOAH, more useless action coming up.

that's the kinda dialogues you never got in any of the elder scrolls :S I Hope Bethesda can reproduce the sofisticated douchebagerry of the previous titles in fallout 3. Oblivion's dialogue routine is imo one of the worst ones in the entire history of gaming. Who wants to play a minigame in order to define an npc's disposition towards him? If they apply something as stupid as that on fallout 3 it will scar me for life.

@randomUnhold Midwest wouldn't be boring for fallout 4 There is still an enclave base in Chicago I think. They made ED-E and sent it to Navarro which means their base is still active. There is a ton of stuff they can do there. Oh and its probably not true but some dude in fallout 2 said the midwest has radioactive twisters miles long.

@LarisaFrolova yes im actualy 12 and i do like to just pick up games like Battlefield or Fallout 3 just to shoot everything in sight, but i respect older games and i didnt say that this game is shitty, all i said was that i preffered Falout 3 to the first two and that i considered it better-loking than this. so i do respect others and their opinions :)

well in the original fallout 2, no they didn't arrive. In the restoration Mod, which basically restores 50% of the fallout 2 quests and locations and such, they do appear. They instantly ask who you are, saying that they got a transmission from someone in the wasteland. You can either fight them or trick them into believing you have no idea what they're talking about.

No, what I mean is that the story in FO3 is sort of weak and the characters are bland compared to the originals'. Besides, I don't think Bethesda really knows how to make the original viewpoint of the originals. That was Black Isles' specialization. And they don't exist anymore, so...we can't expect an original game anytime soon.

Explain "hardcore RPG" for me, my friend. I think the one main difference between Diablo and Fallout is that Fallout is turn-based and Diablo is all action. That's about it. Otherwise they pretty much *are* the same, except for the setting they inhabit. Neither are by any means a traditional-styled RPG; console or otherwise. Or 'hardcore,' for that matter.

Yea, it's fixed. Also, new items ARE added. And nearly all bugs are fixed. Except for one thing... Don't travel with your car to the slave camps, it fucks up BAD! I've never got so far myself, but 6 months (ingame) after you've completed the game (rescued the villagers and the GECK), Arroyo will supposedly be reopened in a Vault City-Style: NEW ARROYO!

In my eyes, all the Fallout games are great(except for BOS, not Tactics), but they do have their issues. The problems with the first 2 Fallout games was the repetitive combat, and Fallout 3 didn't have quite as much player freedom as the first 2. I'm happy New Vegas fixed both.

Yeah, I miss the gameplay elements in the original Fallout games...I still think FO3 is a lot of fun, but the original games had stronger role-playing elements, and far better stories. It's too bad that Black Isle Studies had to close...Van Buren would've been a ton of fun.

fallout 3 is better than the first 2, easy, no discussion. 3 letters FPS. i respect everything that went into the first 2 abd understand that without them there woudnt be a part 3 but 3 is definetely more fun to play. i do like the storyline in the first 2 games better though, i wont argue that.

The cool thing about the fallout 1 and 2 dialogue is that its not only humorous at times, it can also sound realistic and it's never bland. You can hear emotion. In fallout 3 they speak in monotones and never sound very enthusiastic. Still a good game though.

well you need to barter with the guard at the gate to shady sands and get his rope,then use the rope on the elevator. but the water chip isn't actually there so your pretty much wasting your time. look for necropolis near junktown.

Nothing happens. If you do install one of the unofficial patches (hell if I remember what they were called) he does actually send a goon squad with gauss rifles after you. You can still wiggle out with a hilarious speech check though.

To be fair, that's 200 years gone by. And the Brotherhood of steel is just as defunct by NV. It's not like in the Fallout world there is new power armor. It's all hand me downs that become more and more fragile/broken/rare.

I consider it to be the fourth in the series because I hardly think that Tactics or Brotherhood of Steel should factor into the main plot. Those two games are just a pair of obsolete shoe-horns that to be honest, just sucked.

If you call New Vegas is called Fallout 4 by its order, that is actually Fallout 6. the order is Fallout - Fallout 2 - Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel - Fallout Brotherhood of Steel - Fallout 3 - Fallout New Vegas.

NO it didn't, it ruined the whole story, and that's why Fallout: New Vegas will COMPLETELY ignore the existence of Fallout 3. The game Fallout 3 was not bad in terms of gameplay, but the story was just rubbish.

I mean in a nulciar war the EMP will destroy eny comunication and electrical, electronic devices.And yet in Fallout 3 there is electricuti in allmost every bilding i enter , working juboxes, computers and so on...

The restoration patch includes a lot of stuff that was meant to be in-game, but was cut from the final version. There's several lines by the "talking heads" included in the Fallout 2 Restoration mod. You can for instance find Sulik's sister and Sulik's village, and hear him say things like "It's cool bein' home, but the place be lookin' a mite small now!" LOTS of extra quests, such as making an orphanage for all the kids in the Den etc. Download it, it's TOTALLY worth it :P

@XxChrisXx121 New Vegas is pretty good in that department, it helps that it was made by most of the guys who made Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout 3 is the one that was lacking this sort of brilliant interaction.

@Arzaker There is one. Search for Classic Advanced Power Armor. It's fucking awesome. get the P94 mod and the desert theme mod, and BAM! There's a whole lot more Fallout-feel in Fallout 3 :D

@grineti5 : Anyone who was born after around 1981 think the same way as you. You have no idea what a great game looks like. Fallout 1 and 2 were better than Fallout3. And I played Fallout3 a lot.

They were working on 2 projects. FO tactics 2 and they actually were making a fallout 3 before they lost funding. It was to be called Van Buren. Go look it up. I think they even have a beta.

The thing people need to remember is that there would be no FO3 without Bethesda I mean, I doubt the creaters of fo1 and 2 were dieing to make a new game after several years of inactivity.

i didn't play the first and the second game, but fallout 3 was such an experience you won't see every day... I finished it yesterday, and I think it was one of the best games I ever played

Nothing happens if you play the original version of the game. However, if you have the restoration patch installed, you have a chance to encounter an Enclave patrol around Gecko.
