Fallout 3 is an action role-playing open world video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios, and is the third major installment in the Fallout series. The game was released in North America, Europe and Australia in October 2008, and in Japan in December 2008 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 36 years after the setting of Fallout 2 and 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse that devastated the game's world, in a future where international conflicts between the United States and China culminated in a Sino-American war in 2077, due to the scarcity of petroleum reserves that ran the economies of both countries. The player character is an inhabitant of Vault 101, a survival shelter designed to protect up to 1,000 humans from the nuclear fallout. When the player character's father disappears under mysterious circumstances, the leader of the Vault initiates martial law and sends security forces after the player, who is forced to escape from the Vault and journey into the ruins of Washington, D.C. to track their father down. Along the way the player is assisted by a number of human survivors and must battle myriad enemies that inhabit the area, now known as the "Capital Wasteland".
Fallout 3 was critically acclaimed and received a number of Game of the Year awards, praising the game's open-ended gameplay and flexible character-leveling system. The NPD Group estimated that Fallout 3 sold over 610,000 units during its initial month of release in October 2008, performing better than Bethesda Softworks' previous game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which sold nearly 500,000 units in its first month. The game has received post-launch support with Bethesda releasing five downloadable add-ons. The game received controversy upon release, including the use of and the ability to be addicted to morphine and other drugs including alcohol in the game for Australia, religious and cultural sentiments in India over the cattle in the game being called Brahmin, and sensitivity in Japan due to a weapon that launches mini nuclear bombs called the "Fat Man" and a quest involving the detonation/disarming of an atomic bomb.

I find it interesting how the opinion of this game and FNV has shifted over the years. I remember when FNV game out, everyone was complaining about how it was a buggy mess that was inferior to F3. Now FNV is the golden child of the newer Fallout games with people who will fight you if you say any other game is your favorite.

Yeah I honestly I find it strange how little this is discussed. I too remember New Vegas being quite disliked when it came out and Fallout 3 was generally very well received with the exception of the Fallout 1 & 2 purists. While I personally like New Vegas a bit better than F3, I think the extreme hatred a lot of NV fans have for Fallout 3 is unwarranted and that it’s a fantastic game.

Hey, we did that to Japan. And traditionally, that's how indulgences worked. You did something horrible, so to atone, you must do good. You blew up Megaton, but you can atone for your sins by giving all other places free clean water. Besides, I did the same thing in New Vegas. I nuked both sides and killed tons of people, but just because I wiped out the Fiends and Powder Gangers last, I got a massive karma boost and was on the level of Messiah by the time the Battle for Hoover Dam began.

jackedup447 In Fallout 1 and 2, if you had an intelligence below 4 you couldn't get quests because you spoke like a caveman. Having a low intelligence also meant you got less skill points when leveling up. So yes, being dumb in the Fallout games makes everything harder. The only good thing is laughing at how stupid your character sounds when they speak.

@DrearierSpider1
@DrearierSpider1 9 лет назад
I think a lot of the reason people hated FO3 was that FO1 & 2 were old school, hardcore cRPG's. Aside from changing the genre/perspective, FO3 really just didn't deliver the same level of quality in writing, roleplaying, world reactivity, etc. I do enjoy the game, but after going back and playing the originals years after I played FO3, I was much more impressed by them. It's a shame so many Fallout "fans" haven't even tried to play the first 2.

@EldritchAugur
@EldritchAugur 9 лет назад
DrearierSpider1 The writing is EXTREMELY poor in Fallout 3, not just as a Fallout title but as a game in general. Sometimes I don't even think they played the original games, they changed the Brotherhood from xenophobic, selfish assholes to classic good guys, protecters of the wasteland. They fucked up the Enclave's motives, so many plotholes, super mutants just appear out of nowhere? Jet is stocked in pre-war counters when it's a drug that sprung up after the war? Even the setting was wrong, the chinese submarine captain's log in Fallout 2 mentions that almost all of the warheads hit D.C. and there is nothing left. In Fallout 3 D.C. looks pretty intact.

***** Oh man, going from Fallout 3 to New Vegas was a step up in terms of writing and general storyline direction. There was a lot of stuff in Fallout 3 that really just sucks and thinking back on it, it's quite a poor storyline. Plus it helps that New Vegas was apparently built on a lot of remnants from 'Van Buren' aka the Fallout game Black Isle was partway though making before it fell apart.

I remember spending months on this games exploring every last nook and cranny of this vast map and all of the DLC content; one thing I love about these games is you will never experience the exact same version of the game and the events within, there are so many random encounters and hilarious characters and set pieces. It really was a great experience playing through this game for the first time.

I've never understood why the morality system in Fallout 3 is praised so much and why Megaton is used as the go to example. In what sense is choosing whether or not to detonate a fucking nuclear warhead in the middle of a populated settlement a complex moral quandary? I can murder, rob, kill some more, then eat the corpses but it's all okay in the end because the game tells me I'm in good standing again if I give bottles of water to the homeless bloke outside of Megaton. Unless of course I blew it up, oh wait no, it's cool there's another guy outside of Rivet City. So deep. At least New Vegas made attempts at revamping the system, then Fallout 4 came along and threw that out and introduced a system even less involved and complex than the third game. Oh Bethesda.

Holy shit. Fallout 4 is the most piece of shit garbage game ever. There is zero role-playing. Every quest is to go to a place and kill all the raiders, synths, and mutants. You have zero player control. You can't be bad at all. The writing is weak compared to past Fallouts. Any role-playing that is there is forced by the player just using their imagination. Unlike past Fallout games, your character already has a prebuilt story in Fallout 4. If you play as a male, you are a military veteran that needs to find his son. If you are a women, then you are law major that needs to find her son. Fallout 4 is a shitty shooter that has bullet spongy enemies, an open world, perks, shitty quest, and an inventory. At least Skyrim had mods that could fix it. Fallout 4's terrible dialogue system prevents cool quest mods from appearing. Skyrim at least did not have a voiced protagonist, so it could have cool quest mods to save it. The only thing Fallout 4 does better than the other Fallout games is the combat and graphics. Those two things have never even mattered in Fallout though. Fallout was all about making choices in an alive post-apocalyptic world. Not shootings things in the face. Speech was also thrown in the trash can in Fallout 4. Fallout 4 is definitely not a Fallout game. Almost anybody with a brain will say that Fallout 4 is worse than all the other Fallout games. The writing in the main quest is also terrible. Why would the institute want you to join them? Caesar's Legion is much superior villain faction. Also the factions in New Vegas have much more depth to them. All the factions have pros and cons which adds more of a grey area, which makes it more compelling to chose a faction. Also there are way more endings in New Vegas. The endings in New Vegas count for everything you did, so that means more endings. There are also tons of essential NPCs in Fallout 4. In New Vegas you can kill everybody and everything. The only NPC you can't kill in New Vegas is Yes Man. Yes Man is essential to beating the game, so it makes sense. The factions in Fallout 4 are terrible. The Minutemen are just the objective good guys. The Brotherhood of Steel are just assholes that are a combination of the old Brotherhood and the New Brotherhood. The Railroad are just a ripoff of the real life Underground Railroad. The Institute is the worst faction ever, because they think they are doing the right thing by killing people. All the side quest that aren't just killing people have shitty writing. Also the side quest are in very small numbers that aren't just killing people. The settlement building is just clunky and bad. There are much better building tools in other games. Such as Halo 5's Forge and Minecraft. The last good game that Bethesda made was Morrowind. The last real and good Fallout game was New Vegas. Please go and play The Witcher 3, Morrowind, and Fallouts 1,2, and New Vegas. After that, play Fallout 4, and then tell me Fallout 4 is and RPG again. The dialogue also is confusing, and all four options it gives you, all mean "yes".

@freindlessversion2.021
@freindlessversion2.021 6 лет назад
The reason is for the fans that played fallout 1/2 as it's kinda disappointing in some areas, the biggest being the writing which was absolute shit compared to 1 and 2. Some perks are outright useless like speech as it's just a random chance, so if you failed the speech option you can just save scum and try again until it works. There is also no point to exploring as you have a compass that just leads you to your next quest with a marker, some can see it as quality life while others say that it ruins of exploring and finding that area yourself. I personally think that it ruins the experience as one of the most memorable locations for me was vault 87 as the compass doesn't have a marker, so you have to explore this massive facility in order to find the geck, and they had to lead you there by shear design. The ending is also universally considered god awful Now FO3 can be a fun game, especially if you get a bunch of mods. But it just doesn't share the amount of quality the the first two entries have, which is why old fans prefer New Vegas because some of the people at interplay worked at obsidian and they know how to make a fallout game with an excellent story, and intriguing sidequests. I am not surprised that New Vegas is considered by many to be better than FO3. If you just want to have fun then you should play FO3 , but if you want an actual story then you can skip over it and go to New Vegas instead.

@Zer0dog - Thank you. The Fallout community is shit in general. When anybody actually enjoys anything other than 1/2 and New Vegas, fat greasy elitist pricks will outright attack and shut down the person just like they do with their bag of doritos. There are some good people who don't like 3 and 4 who explain and debate in professional ways, but are few and far between. Why should they care about 3 and 4 fans so much? It's not like their precious Fallout games will go away. It's just that people think that they're entitled I guess. So I guess I'm not a "Real Fallout fan" because I'm not a one dimensional idiot who goes around and tells people that they aren't "Real Fans" because people like things that they don't. In conclusion, the Fallout community is fubar'd, and hopefully it'll change.

FNV is very overrated. I'm not saying it's bad, but it doesn't live up to it's hype among the fanboys. It might be me, but the whole cowboy thing is very boring. It doesn't feel apocalyptic at all in the same was as F3. In fact, some of the DLCs offer better game play than the main story.. which is very sad indeed.

I'd have to agree with the people who dislike FO3 who purposes of writing. Gameplay wise, it's a very enjoyable game aside from the less than weighty guns, but that is something that's solvable, and was solved in the psuedo-sequel of New Vegas. But writing wise, not mentioning some of the stellar dialogue, it's certainly not equal to any of the other main games in the series (1, 2, and NV). The BoS is simply the most iconic, as it was a group of isolationists who hoarded technology with varying levels of aggression. They were never the good guys, nor the bad guys, and that was the whole shtick with a lot of the pre-sequel writing. Even the Enclave with it's less than ethical plan, it was clear there were more than a few guys in the Enclave that certainly didn't believe in it. The Master can be persuaded to kill himself if you prove that his plan won't last for more than a single generation, because he's doing it to try and save people. In FO3, though, there was none of this. The BoS were wholesale good guys who wanted to help people and make bunnies a mandatory thing to own. The Enclave was a bunch of morons, and the only semblance of them having morals is the Colonel at the ending, and it's suspect that that was more a choice for Speech oriented players rather than a writing one. That's not even touching on the topic of the Settlements looking like they were built last week instead of long-lasting places where people make a living for themselves. TLDR, Game's got shit writing and it deserves the bad rap it gets for that. Fun to play, though.

I know this comment is old as hell, but I'd still like to clarify something. Advancing and expanding the lore is NOT bad writing. Bad writing is making bad stories that are boring, and make no sense. But writing a story about a SEPARATE chapter of BoS who went exploring to the east, and their leader having a change of heart, realizing they could actually help people instead of hoarding technology, and thus leading the group in a new direction.. that is not bad writing. That is interesting writing right there. They made it clear in the game what the original BoS is all about, and also detailed how this chapter of BoS has gone in a different direction, and also clarified that this didn't sit well with the original BoS back west but that the local leadership has made it's decision and stuck with it. Generally, Bethesda isn't great a making a lot of different options in these games, hence why they further reduced the dialogue to Yes, sarcastic Yes and No in Fallout 4. But your chosen example is bad. Having some chapter of the faction change it's ways after being separated from the main group and having different experiences is perfectly normal, and that choice is one of the good choices Bethesda made with FO3.
@sparkz9502
@sparkz9502 2 года назад
@@KafanskaTV The whole thing with people complaining about the portrayal of the BoS in Fallout 3 never made much sense in the first place. Ask the community and a common theme of Fallout 3 bashing is how it is supposedly a huge departure from Fallout 1 and 2, but I have a feeling very few of them actually played those games. It seems like people saw the Brotherhood's portrayal in FNV as reclusive, militaristic, and self-centered, and decided retrospectively that they had always been like that. Although they are isolationist in Fallout 1, they are certainly not portrayed as being aggressive and are willing to help the Vault Dweller against the Master, showing they are willing to do things for the betterment of the wasteland, and they are also noted to share technology with groups they are friendly towards. Fallout 2 arguably perfectly sets the stage for Fallout 3, showing them as peaceful and friendly towards the NCR, and as an ally against the Enclave, but nonetheless in decline because of their isolationism and thus in desperate need to expand outwards. It is perfectly logical for them to send expeditions to the east to break their decline, and there's no reason to believe that a faction of them wouldn't decide to aid wastelanders given the situation in DC. If anything it is New Vegas that significantly diverges from the portrayal of the BoS in Fallout 1 and 2, with the Mojave Chapter being ultraisolationist, against developing new tech, hostile towards the NCR, and petty enough to the point of harassing caravans to steal their technology, something which never happened in the original games. If it is considered acceptable for part of the BoS to turn radically conservative there's absolutely no reason why they couldn't also logically turn benevolent as in Fallout 3.

butch the birthday ruiner My main problem with Fallout 3's world was that it felt like the bombs had dropped a few months ago, not 200 years ago. Fallout New Vegas had multiple factions waging war, a whole military organisation, farms and towns and cities where people lived and thrived; it actually felt like the world was making progress and moving on, in Fallout 3 there was none of this. Whilst the Mojave wasteland was kind of boring in comparison to the DC wasteland at least it actually felt like a living world.

Great review for a great game. Played it for so many hours and I still come back to it now and then. Just like previous Bethesda entrys Morrowind and Oblivion I just can't seem to get enough of these type of games. Now playing Fallout 4 and I'm pretty satisfied with it. More action focused but still good. But FO3 will always have a special place in my heart :)

My favorite mission was the Virtual Reality one. I played it long ago, but I remembered it as microcosm for what the game could have been if they allowed to play it as an actual RPG. I remembered that it was a level actually made without the quest marker in mind. You had to ask people around in order to know what was going on. You slowly learned the story of Vault by playing the game rather than reading about it in logs. And there even was a small puzzle that involved actual problem solving. Plus the story itself was pretty neat.

One of the things I love about F3 over NV is that the world actually lives without the player. You can travel the wasteland and hear a random explosion in the nearby distance. Go to check it out and see npcs duking it out with each other, completely unaware of your presences (unless they actually notice you). Or a quest npc can get killed by random creature or raider spawns while attempting to travel from point A to point B in real time, and you can fail (or succeed) in a quest because of it, without being anywhere near them. It was great! NV just doesn't have that, all characters are nailed to their spawning points and will never fight each other unless scripted to do so.

If you want to see an RPG that does weapon-scaling damange for guns RIGHT as well as in a more realistic manner, go check out Wasteland 2. When you level up your guns/weapon skill you increase your accuracy, handling and other factors that will improve your chance to do critical damage, but guns themselves have the same damage regardless. I don't know why more RPGs (and Bethesda) doesn't stick with that idea. Thankfully Obsidian and Inexille got that down.

You can use VATS to shoot enemies weapons out their hands if they have a lot of health or resilience to damage resorting to them being forced to use melee, shoot their leg if to slow them down, or shoot the grenade in their hands to blow them and enemies nearby up or damage them at least. Sure you can try shooting their heads or you can try taking out more than one with a shot to an explosive or nearby explosive such as a mine near the enemy.

"Professional Fallout 3 haters," I dunno why but that term made me laugh. Honestly, I think most of the people that hate this game are the hardest of hardcore Fallout 1 and 2 fans. And I will admit up front I'm a huge Fallout fangirl and I have some qualms with where Bethesda took the series, but at the end of the day what matters to me is not how different the gameplay is but simply whether or not the game is fun to play and whether or not the new developers managed to capture the soul of the originals. And I think Bethesda won on both counts, the game is still tons of fun and it still felt like a Fallout game at heart. The gameplay was different but it still made me feel like I was in Fallouts universe.

They change the story of Super Mutants and act like D.C never got nuked, in fallout 2 it states that D.C got the most nukes thrown at it. There. Should. Not. Be. A. D.C. It changes the lore of the Enclave just a little but enough to tell that they could give a shit about the first two, they make the BoS the good guys when they sue to be a bunch of cowards and assholes. It doesn't fit in the universe, it's a fuck you to the universe.

RuthdorFirehammer I think they might have done that due to a lawsuit with Interplay, so in return even after winning the law suit Bethesda want "Fuck you, this is our game now, we'll make our own lore." also, even though I love fallout 1 and 2 over 3, I feel some people are so blinded by nostalgia and with hate twords fallout 3 that they forgot some flaws with the original game. Like for example, I never liked the combat of fallout 1 and 2, it always felt like walk back, shoot at the enemy approaching and pray you don't get shot after your turn ends rinse and repeat, though I did like the enemy mishaps and injuries you could inflict on people, those were cool. Now I'm not trying to defend fallout 3 as the game does pale in comparison for the first two but we can't forget the flaws of fallout 1 and 2 and treat them like they were flawless. I remember the tutorial in Fallout 2 being pretty bad unless you were a melee character. When it comes to post apocalyptic RPGs, the best one right now is wasteland 2. Good combat, great story and awesome side quests.

Fallout 1 & 2 where not shooter's but they had the weapon restriction system figured out. Basically you could wield heavy weapons, plasma/laser or anything of that sort. But since you where not familiar with the or not strong enough to wield the you could barely ever land a shot and had your action points reduced. For me in fallout 3 all weapons should have had a base damage no matter your build, but you should be hindered by higher recoil, reduced stamina, slower reload, etc.

As someone who actually rather enjoys a good RPG now and again, Fallout 3 rang pretty hollow. "Right after coming out of the starting area you're faced with a major moral choice" is kind of a falsehood; your decision isn't major, it's just incredibly black and white to the point of being a total cartoonish villain or just NOT being a total cartoonish villain. Like, you can blow up a city..... Or not. If you're curious about WHY you would blow up a city, you can look into it and find out that a rich guy finds the city disruptive to his view. How's the rich guy rich in a post apocalyptic world? Oh, he found a tower and has a robe and a servant. Well, where does he get his food? The town? Nowhere? We know he's evil because he's racist against ghouls, or something, yet at the same time I'm felt kind of indifferent since there's slavers that take people as slaves and... Lock them in cages to do nothing. You effectively have no standard for normality in the wasteland, because there is none. Everyone is doing their own good or evil thing, and it's up to you to murder the evil to save the good, even though it makes effectively no goddamned sense when you're in a post-nuclear world where everyone should just be trying to survive. The whole world makes no sense to me, like it was made with situations for the player in mind and they just dropped any pretense afterwards of it making sense. The entire plot revolves around curing the wasteland's water problem, and in your own home you have a robot that simply synthesizes water. You have one dude outside of every major town who will take water and give you karma, yet aside from that there's magically rich people, towns that seem to get along just fine, and even a radio station. NOBODY is dying of a lack of water. There's such a massive civilization level mixture in Fallout 3 it's uncanny, since you have people who have time to be rich, petty racism, and slavery, but without any kind of foundation to back it up, all while the game says you need to save these people who don't exist, who are doing things they clearly shouldn't be doing (why are there two superheroes in a dying, lacking in water wasteland when both of these individuals should be scrounging for basic necessities?), and in general all of this leads to one problem I have with the game. It contradicts itself at every single turn. You end up with a passable FPS, but a subpar RPG.

Skyrim doesn't really need remastering, it still looks good. Remastering Fallout 3 would allow the new demographic to actually experience a proper modern Fallout game. Just my two cents.

Fallout 3 has a good intro. But the game itself, eh, not really an RPG when you can max out a lot of your stats.

New Vegas was a much better game in every aspect. It had more factions, more stories, a ton of endings for a lot of characters you met during the game and some of the most interesting side stories in gaming I´ve seen. i.imgur.com/olUvIVr.jpg

Dad was voiced by Liam Neeson? No wonder you have such a S.P.E.C.I.A.L set of skills from the get go. Also surprised you wrote of sneak so fast. Personally always play the stealth role in games where it is an option, and there are some real benefits to sneak in this game, especially the critical hits that have saved me more than once in sticky situations. I'd say give it a go but it's always a drag trying to play a game in a play style opposite to your preferred way. Watching your footage is interesting because it's so vastly different from the way I play (aside from destroying ghouls with the combat shotgun), and it's a real testament to how varied this game is. Will always hold a place in my heart, especially the DLC's.

Forgive me for being negative, but I think this might be your least helpful review, possibly even your worst. You don't really respond to much of the criticism, and sort of handwave them with an ad hominem about its detractors being "haters." I agree that fallout 3 isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but there are GLARING structural and narrative flaws with the game that I don't feel like you give enough weight.

I know this was ages ago but the writing really pales compared to the older games and New Vegas. Main quest has two endings which is so black and white and requires no real moral questioning. Your character isn't given the freedom and most quests will have two endings often also with black and white endings. And the feeling that you have any real effect on the world isn't there. You're not forced to do much but heavily advised. I know New Vegas has the same problem at the start but when you do eventually get to New Vegas the game opens up massively and you see the politics of the world and how large the world is. But you can have an effect on pretty much everything in the world

THANK...YOU!!! At last, a review about Fallout 3 from someone who actually played the game and is not just howling with the wolves ("Fallout saga stops with Fallout 2 blah blah blah....")!!! F3 is the fucking hell of a great game!!! Bethesda has made some fantastic games: Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and... Fallout 3!

Only breaking bug in the pc version is the stuttering on some rigs. Its a bug in the game engine that causes this. There are fixes to download but more alot of them just slows the game down to slow motion instead. And this is on powerful hardware too.

I'm not a big fan of Fallout 3 but I understand why people like so much. It's just got so many options and so many things to do that it can't really be considered a bad game no matter what issues I have with it. For me personally I just wish the graphics were a little more interesting to look at, don't get me wrong, it's technically impressive and but I can't get passed the combat. I don't like combat being based on the role of the dice, especially when guns are involved. When I shoot a bullet into someone's skull at point blank range, I expect them to die, not have my bullet miss simply because I'm not a high enough level. I can't be the only one who thinks that's stupid. Personally I'd rather play something like Rage or even one of the Far Cry games but Fallout is probably the better game overall compared to those. It's just not a game I particularly enjoy.

Jaeger Newman For me it's the opposite. I'm a fan of the game, but I didn't understand why people liked it so much at first. I heard a lot of positive about the game, but I didn't expect to like it much. When I finally got around to testing it, I just loved it to bits. I agree about every shortcoming you mentioned, but that's just a small part of the game, and doesn't bother me much. The V.A.T.S. system, which I assumed was a boring gimmick, I use all the fricking time. Even though the characters aren't as well written as in the best RPGs around, it's still better than any non-interactive action game, and the writing is good enough for me to have fun talking with people.
