Lol @ 2:37 Jon, you have 368 perk points on deck, put those points into Legendary Perks. Everything is a bullet sponge at your level because you barely have any perks that boost damage.

Hey Jon, I haven’t finished the video yet, but you often mention how enemies feel like tanks in Fallout 76. While it is true enemies can often feel like damage sponges, I believe your lack of specialization is also to blame. At 00:02:36 you mention how you are very good with shotguns and handguns. You only have rank one of each of the damage perk cards equipped though. You essentially have the equivalent of a single max ranked card. A level four character could easily have the same amount of damage boosting perks as you. The enemies are being scaled to you with the expectation that you have also invested in these areas to match them. Since you have not invested into combat, everything will be far more tank-like than they are designed to be. My goal is not to be critical of your playstyle and claim everything you are doing is wrong. I simply wanted to expand upon something you frequently comment on. If you are interested in gameplay suggestions though, then I would recommend swapping out some of the perk cards you have for crafting with damage perks and simply put the crafting perks back on when you need them. I believe they have made the system much easier to do this with loadouts and movable special points since your main time in the game.

I mean with your build, you are not really good at shotguns or pistols Jon. You have two shotgun perks Master Shotgunner & Enforcer, but they are not maxed out (Plus each gun type perk has 3 different cards for damage multipliers, and it looks like you only took one rank of one of them). And the especially frustrating thing is that Jon will research the other Bethesda Fallout games to the Nth degree, but will never spend an hour learning about FO76's unique mechanics - perk loadouts; character (bloodied) builds; mutations; food and CAMP item buffs; legendary crafting, etc. - simply because he detests and throws shade at the game over "muh single-player experience".

2:37 you literally only specced into level 1 of most of your weapon-based perk cards. of course you're not doing any damage! get rid of awareness, gunslinger, mister sandman and gunrunner to free up the perk points to invest more in the cards that up your damage with specific weapon types and rank each card all the way up to max level. level 1 master shotgunner isn't good enough without more points in that and expert and master shotgunner. the cards stack, so level3 shotgunner + level3 expert shotgunner + level3 master shotgunner gives you +60% shotgun damage, which would go a long way to helping your build. you'd be better served focusing on either single shot rifles with rifleman or auto rifles with commando as a secondary for your endgame build, rather than pistols, imo.

Its a symptom of the terrible game balance of release 76, repairing high level guns was so expensive and not worth the scrap that re-crafting high level pipe guns that only did slightly less damage was far more economical which got even worse when bethesda nerfed the amount of junk we got from items and increased the amount needed to repair with. The key to any good mystery is keeping the audience guessing, and that requires drip feeding information at a particular rate. Too much information spoils the reveal, too little information removes any desire to investigate, both of which lead to the audience giving up. Based on this video, it looks like Skyline Valley will provide the same experience I had with Assassin's Creed Origins: blindly following waypoints for three hours, only to be rewarded with information that should've been used to kick things off, learn that most of what I'd just done was unnecessary filler, be provided with another blind waypoint, and get told to do it all again.

I am one of the few, less vocal people who actually loved this at launch and do jump back into it every so often. The game has certainly come a long way since launch though. I actually miss the NPC free environment a bit, but there is lots of other ways the game has improved too. EDIT: Jon, while the game does need some more balancing and some things can be a bit tanky such as the end game bosses, those enemies only "felt" tanky to you because your build just is not that good. Those events you avoided are great places for legendaries to drop and on top of that, there just isnt any way you can build your character to do good damage with a basic shotgun, a bloodied (more damage at low health) revolver, and a basic energy rifle. All three are very different builds in this game. Dont get me wrong, I would love some more balancing done on the game, but I have cleared those same areas you did with very little issue or ammo spent all while using a couple non meta builds. So, I understand that you are only playing long enough to make these videos, but it is not really on the game if you are actively ignoring a bunch of it, especially as high level as you are. However, my point is that it was not any games fault if the play ignores/fights against the games overt mechanics. Let's say I was playing BG3 and wanted to make an intelligent barbarian for role play. It would not be the games fault if I put little thought into my build, dumping my strength for intelligence, and then got my butt kicked in combat. Can you still push through after a lot of save scumming, sure. However, you could also take some time to work within the games rules to come up with a build that is much more effective, fun, and can still be an intelligent barbarian. In your own post, you stated that you chose the weakest weapon set in the game, and even then, didn't build into it, but instead built into one that supports group play, while playing solo. If that means you didn't enjoy the game, that's cool, but that isn't the game's fault either. If it makes you feel any better, there are plenty of "good" games I didn't enjoy. Witcher 3 for instance. 9:45 Crafting ammo shouldn't be _that_ much of an issue if you have a secondary "crafting" set of cards that you swap to when crafting stuff... on second thought, I just checked and shotgun ammo is insanely expensive - I can make 540 Ultracite .50 ammo for the same(-ish) amount of resource as 320 shotgun shells and even _more_ .45 and 5.56 Ultracite ammo with the Ammosmith card. Yay for rifle-centric builds?

To be fair, your weapons are kinda underpowered. Most people are using legendary 3 star weapons that can eliminate basic enemies in one or two shots. That would cut down on ammo usage. Jon, all of the problems you have with combat are your own doing. Your build is, frankly, a bit shit. It's really funny that you claim to be "very, very good" with handguns and shotguns. Focusing on two weapon types is bad enough, but you didn't even max out your cards and you have some that are kind of worthless. It's honestly quite easy to make a viable build in this game considering you can get some pretty good legendary weapons from some quests. And ammo is easy to come by thanks to the contextual ammo system. The easiest build to make is probably a power armor heavy gunner with a gatling gun. It'd be great if you made a proper build and then came back to 76 to cover all of the quests that came out since Wastelanders.

Jon you're finding the enemies tanky and the combat tedious because you never got the hang of making a character build in fallout 76. This game is more focused on character perks than fallout 4, what weapons you're using aren't as important as your perks are, and it trips up people trying to apply Fallout 4 style thinking to this game. Your perk loadout is... not good. This is why your character is having a hard time with combat. For a point of reference, I have a shotgun character. Those Lost that you're having to shoot 15-20 times to kill? Hand me the exact same weapon you're using and I'll probably two-shot those guys. You mentioned at least twice in this video that the tanky enemies and combat is a big part of the reason this game isn't working for you. It's not the game, it's your misunderstanding of the character build mechanics. The vast majority of enemies in this game are almost laughably flimsy once you have a strong character. I could send you a basic shotgun perk build if you're interested in finally giving Fallout 76 a fair shake after all this time. Shotguns are kind of my specialty in this game, I have many videos if you want to check that I'm legit. Videos like this don't feel fair to those of us that know this game, and I'd love for you to see how the game actually plays. Imagine if someone put together a nonsense character in Fallout 4 or New Vegas and then said they didn't like those games because combat was too tedious, that they had to use too much ammo and time to kill anything - would you feel like that was a good representation of those games? What you're doing here is kind of the equivalent of trying to run through all of New Vegas with nothing but a Caravan Shotgun and a Varmint Rifle and no Guns skill.
@musubk_gaming8157
@musubk_gaming8157 3 месяца назад
I did that Fallout 4 style thinking when I started this game too. To be clear, when I say what you're doing is the equivalent of using beginner guns and low gun skill in New Vegas, I know you're thinking 'but I'm using the best guns I have! I haven't found anything better!'. That's kind of what I'm getting at - using a poor character build in this game is the equivalent of using poor guns in that game. Great guns will still perform poorly if your character isn't set up to use them well. This is in contrast to FO4 or NV where perks/build are more just to get additional bonuses out of your chosen weapon. In FO76 your combat perks aren't additional bonuses, they're your baseline competency. It looks like your character has a single Master Shotgunner perk at rank 1. There are 3 Shotgunner perks that all go up to rank 3, so you're only 1/9 of the way through basic shotgun competency. In New Vegas terms, you have a Guns skill of 11. And this is before we get into the fact that there is more to putting together a strong build than just the 3 basic damage perks.
@judycyran5986
@judycyran5986 3 месяца назад
You mentioned at the end what bothered you about repairing guns and armor, but honestly New Vegas was alot worse. Either you find the same weapon/ armor to repair or spend caps at some NPC's which can be very expensive. If you have a unique weapon or armor can be very annoying. 76 is not that annoying. Material cost isn't much, and besides your camp there are couple places were you can go The new Nuka World on tour has all crafting stations, stash boxes and it's free to fast travel there.

I feel you're going about the combat wrong with 76. It is an entirely different beast from the single player games where you can be a generalist and do fine. 76 is more akin to an MMO, where you NEED to specialize to be able to keep up. I'm not saying it is a good thing, but that is just the nature of the beast with how this game is set up. It is designed around you having different loadouts for different scenarios that you switch between with the punch card machine. You also need to loot what you kill more. They added the effect of "contextual ammo" so whatever you kill will drop some of the ammo you used to kill them with. Helps with the flow of combat a lot more.

That's why Jon is getting dribs and drabs from the NPCs: artificial means to a scummy end. It's quite sad to see BGS reduced to this from my perspective. The idea explored in background worldbuilding and often relayed by visuals alone in 76 had enormous potential as the SP with co-op some in the community had long requested and that potential never will be realized due to industry shenanigans that have sullied the reputations not only of BGS, but Arkane, Bioware, CD Projekt and so many other formerly great studios. Hopefully, in time, they will recover from the damage done in the name of obscene profit for IP owners and investors, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. More likely, their lot and ours will get far worse before it gets better because the definition of "success" of a game has been reduced in the industry solely to whether or not it is financially successful.

Though "Contextual Ammo drops" (ammo dropping based on your gun) is helpful, you still need specific builds to deal with the economy. Gatling is probably the best in that regard because ammo drops like it would for a minigun, but gatlings use far less, meaning you're always gaining more.

@@sneeze_organ No actual need for a "Meta build", just a simple "specialize your gear" idea. As in, just focus on one weapon type, and flesh that out sensibly. Want to play shotguns? Get a good shotgun, give it a halfway useful legendary effect (Anti-Armor is never wrong, as enemies just gain quite a bit of that late-game, but other effects work just as well depending on your playstyle), and then use the perk-cards that buff shotguns. Replace it for other weapons if you want to play those other weapons. That's not complicated, and easily something most people end up doing just by playing the game normally as long as they keep the "focus one one weapon type" idea. Personally, I am primarily running commando, with a tiny bit of rifleman (as there is a lot of overlap outside of the damage boosting perks, so I run all Commando damage and one rifleman damage), and I barely have any problem fighting anything using my lever-action-rifle, with the automatic weapons being used for larger groups or bosses of any kind.

I'm sorry to say this Jon, but the main reason that you have problems with enemies, is not that they're too tanky - it's just your build that is just not good for anything. You have literally no defense, and way to little firepower, unless you're not detected - which works quite fine in Fallout 4, but in 76 is pretty much useless. In your case: way too much luck, way too less strength. And don't even get me started about that .45 revolver piss shooter 😉I tried once build my character for long range suppressed sniping. Around level 100-150 if i remember correctly, that plan went straight in the bin. Now I have secret service armor (arguably the best non-power armor), and lot more strength, to make shotguns actually efective. I'm able to run all guns blazing, one shot kill those ghouls you've encountered at 5:00, and two-three shot the Lost.

Contra update: looks to much like the pitt (I get headaches from this dark red lightning stuff), railroad story telling, I ran this area of the map for 30 hours by now... Exploration light to similar to Starfield, enemies are annoying, no cool side missions, 90% percent of this area doesn't allows camp building, only one trading post that can be found and it's trader moves around pulling enemies inside, also the stash box is hidden in plain sight still hard to find a dark blue box in a dark red area, thats muddy and stormy, all cool exploration parts turned out to be a dead end or quest related, new events dont tie into the story, while doing them you get the expression they would be somehow tied to it but nope... oh and Bethesda changed the land around the are that was formerly the boarder and bulldozed my camp with half an mountain now stuck inside my camp...

Dear Lord, can someone in the UK PLEASE hook up Jon with Angry Turtle. Jon, I promise his help would make the game so much more enjoyable for you! I do appreciate your honesty in the opening remarks: you like everything about Fallout 76 not having to do with the online multiplayer mechanics and you want a single-player experience. But if you're going to play/showcase the game, you're going to have to face that you need to play it with a different mindset than if it were single-player - because you're not going to get that. You may not like all of the cards 76 deals to you, but you can choose to learn how to play those cards. Because to be frank, right now it's you who's being played. Love, -A level 770 player
@hopin8krzys
@hopin8krzys 3 месяца назад
I agree with your answer to the opening question, tho I would take it a bit further - 76 is just not really a Fallout game, and people should not expect it to work like one, despite the name and setting. It's like a spinoff using a popular brand name to get more money. And I think it's not a bad game at all (currently), when treated this way. Just a bad Fallout I'm a new player to 76, only started a bit after the show aired (although I did try playing it at least once in the past, but this broken mess of code just refused to work on my pc and support could not help). I also watched pretty much all of your videos from it. This game now is very different to what it was back when you started (and even Wastelanders). Many people speak about meta, but it's absolutely not necessary - you don't have to be op strong and melt everything in miliseconds, this game is easy and all weapon classes are valid, even if some objectively much stronger than others. But your build is simply bad - very "falloutish", which doesn't work in this nonFallout-Fallout game. You need to specialise into specific weapons, get some solid legendary gear (a lot of your viewers would happily give you some), get more mutations, use legendary perks and your 350 perk points to upgrade them, create a specific crafting and playing builds (now you can freely change SPECIAL and have two build slots unlocked by default) to not waste points having perks like ammosmith constantly equipped. This might sound like a lot, but it really isn't - making a meta build involves a lot of grind, but optimising a casual build over level 50 is super easy. I myself changed a playstyle a few times, still didn't even try bloodied (feels like too much of a hassle), and currently running my own pve build in power armor with .50 cal machinegun. Maybe I don't destroy enemies as fast as I could, but I'm definitely not struggling like you did here. Also, ammo crafting is super easy, just loot what you need and then scrap and craft with proper perks

I had to go and play this to see why Jon was having so much trouble. As someone who's not crazy high level (205) but has played more consistently, I had no trouble 3 shotting the lost with a sniper, or melting them with a flamer. I think, apart from his perks being badly set up as other people have pointed out, the main problem is that Jon is playing 76 like it's 4 survival. You can't come back to an online multiplayer after years away and expect everything to work just as well as it did when you left. At this point I have pretty much every mutation for example, I regen health out of combat, I regen rads, and you can take a perk that makes the downsides barely noticable. Plus Legendar Perks of course, meaning I have higher special and can churn out ammo if I need to for much cheaper. I'm not really defending Fallout 76 here as such, it's far from my favourite, I just feel like Jon would struggle less if he took a bit of time to work on the different mechanics and balance. Also a very small amount of daily questing has left me with more junk and ammo than I can use up, it's not really a grind to get them if you're even a little bit active. All that said, I can definitely agree with some of his complaints, there isn't that much to do a lot of the time, and the previous expeditions really were grind fests, I think the proper story updates like this are much better in that regard. I still think he would enjoy the BoS story if he gave it a chance though.

John you gave up way too soon, there is a lot more to it. The ex-military guy has several fetch quests. Also you do get more dialogue from some of the other people in the vault. The main issue basically is your lack of patiences Though I have to say at levels 20-25 and onward they are not very tanky. My character is geared towards stealth(I didn't even have a stealth suit or stealth boy at the time I did this dlc) and I have no perk cards in any weapons. I mainly used cold shoulder and a standard .50 cal sniper rifle with suppressor. With a basic lvl 20 combat knife for melee. While a low level raider power armor for use during heavier combat. So I don't know why someone like you with better gear than me was having such a hard time. You should try to stick with it, maybe get a group of friends to help you out?
